Backspace's Journal and image gallery!

Hey thought I'd come check out your journal and wow looks like you're doing pretty well for yourself! I need to be more active like you, I could go for a variety, biking, swimming, and sports... but I don't have a bike, can't swim, and my friends would rather watch a movie than play sports hahaha keep up the good work!

^ I wonder if you wrote that while I was running? My handicap this week was 8.30. I beat my previous time by 47 seconds. I should start settling in to what I can expect most weeks next week. I think my handy cap will be about 9.00 minutes. When I get home I will explain how it all works, it is complicated.

My back feels fine. So I have a another timed 6km fun run today. I am going to try and beat my time last week of 32 mins and 7 seconds.

This is all good but on the last week leading up to the race, try to take it easy. It may actually make you a little stir crazy but the point is to bottle up that energy for race day.

Hey Em, my comment was directed at Chillin, but your post appeared out of after I had posted it.

I also don't have many fitness friends, however I think I have inspired a few. But I am making new ones! Also I have my online friends here (I am a nerd lol). I envy your commitment to your diet, it is one area I am constantly challenged by (well after xmas I am really bad).

My gf told me today I have made huge progress. I am trying to get her to start a journal also.

Cycylist, I am glad to hear that, as I feel as though I want to take it easy to let myself heal. I am going to reclaim today as a rest day. I may try focus on my swimming a little more, as it is low impact, what do you think? Just to really work on my technique more than anything.

I am also going to maintain a really clean diet for the week leading up to the race.

Got paid today so I can pay my race fees!

And get cleat shoes, finally! I am hoping I have time to get used to them! Should I look at the mountain bike style ones for running between stations?

Just over one week now!

I would be interested in learning what you are doing! :)

Best wishes,

^Basically you have to do the run in over 40 minutes to "qualify" each week. If you run the 6km in under 40 mins, then you are "disqualified", but only from winning a prize.

So lets say that I can run the 6km in 30 mins (4km of it is up hill btw), then I will get a handicap of 10 minutes. This means that some runners will leave before me. If my handicap is right, everyone should; reach the finish at about the same time. Next week, my handicap will be about 9mins 30 sec. But I probably;y wont go next week for obvious reasons 9race on weekend.

I just went to the pool, and guess what, I swam 400 m non stop. However, I was doing 25m freestyle, then 25 m breath stroke. I found that my stroke was nice breaking it up.

I prob swam about 800 m in total. I really need to link the stokes up though.

This is great news, as it means I can go in the race. But I would like to focus on my swimming a bit more. What do you think Vince?

Good news! I think if you could swim fresstyle you'll be better off. The thing about swimming is that you can add extra sessions if you like because it's not really going to compromise anything else. Just don't try to hammer out sessions because you may tweak your shoulder.

Okay sweet. Should I get myself some cleats, or just use my shoes. I only have one week to learn how to use them.

You don't want to make any changes you haven't practiced. So to answer the question, no, do not get cleats. It takes a while to get used to them and a week is definitley not enough time.

Doah. Okay. What about those mountain bike brackets that you attache to your pedals? I have used them before, and they may give me some extra speed on the uplift?

Today I busted out a appox 3 km run, then went to the pool and did some laps. My GF came and she is a better swimmer than me! But she gets puffed at the end, where I stop as I get a little "flustered" still.

Went and got heaps of really fresh, clean foods today. So this week is all about fueling up, plenty of Carbs to store for the big day (7 days) and light training. Lots of swimming. I just need to build up to it.

Yeah, get toeclips and straps. As for cleats, there are two types of cyclists: Those who have forgotten to uncleat and have fallen and those who will!

okay

Just went to go to the pool, but there is a school race on.

i am freaking out, paid my entry into the race, and joined a club. But my swimming is so below par it's not funny.

Going to try and swim as much as I can, every day if I have to, twice if need be. Will go for a ride this arvo after swim, as I have stroke correction tomorrow.

Hey

I just swam about 650 m. 400 m non stop freestyle and breathstroke , then 150 m non stop freestyle. That is a new record. I am now breathing out of my nose/ mouth when underwater and doing bilateral breathing. I got a tip from one of the squad coaches. Felt tonnes better. Another coach told me to hold my breath to the last minute, and then expel.

Clean diet today, and about to go for a bike ride now.

I will post my diet in case anyone cares to see what I think is clean when I get back.

Just had a really fun run. My bike is in a state of disrepair, but I'm not phased. Will get it running sweet as before race.

Anyway, my gf went for a ride, and I ran in front of her. I probably covered about 4km with some nice hills. I chucked a fair few sprints in so it was really good HITT. I felt great. Only problem is I had a small problem with my shin. I needed to get on the bike and roll the rest of the way home. But I don't think it's to bad. Sorry Vince, I know you said take it easy, but once I was running I just wanted to keep going!

Diet today: (this is semi typical, cept I will throw in some sort of take away now and again because I am a WEAKLING!). But when I am good, this is what I eat. I get bored as I don't have enough dinner recipes, but they are easy to get. I pretty much always eat a good breakfast and lunch.

Breakfast:

Swiss muesli (low sugar)
Natural Yogurt (low sugar)
Handful of frozen berries

Mid morning:

small pack of chilli salmon

Lunch:

Wholemeal bun with turkey and heaps of greens chopped up really fine. + low fat mayo.

Arvo: Banana or Apple

Dinner:

(note I am trying to carb up for race)

Chicken
Mash potatoes
Frozen vegies

Desert
low sugar jelly

Before bed

Cottage cheese

Before a big ride, I’ll chuck some protein powder in with my breakfast.

I read about tapering last night.

I'm going to do two swims today, lunch and then stroke correction.

The head of my depts brother is 4 time world champ Brad Beven, 'the croc', look him up.

What will I wear in this race Vince? I need those sort of tips now. Had trouble sleeping last night, getting excited.

I just went for a swim.

Couple of problems. First of all, by the time I walked down to the pool, my lungs had sharp pains up the top, similar to the pain I was experiencing when I first started jogging. It may be because I, perhaps stupidly, had two relativity big training days in a row.

I was not able to better my swim of 150 m non stop, but I did do 100m a couple of times. I guess I am going to have accept that I will need to do some breath stroke. Unless I can really refine my technique that is. I am convinced if I learnt one thing, or could pull it all together I would have it worked out.

On a positive note, I went for a swim with a work colleague. He is a cool guy, and is thinking about training for a half marathon in December. Now I stupidly said that might be a good idea. So anyway, my lungs are sore, I should have listened to Vince again and I rally want to go to Stroke correction tonight. Vince did say I could swim as much as I wanted. My damn bike is out of action! I am leaving right now to go and rectify that.

You should wear what you've been wearing. You don't want to change anything. Don't buy anything new, don't try anything new, just do what you've been doing. Otherwise on race day you'll start blistering or chafing or something else.

That's how it usually starts. :)

I seem to recall that you dismissed the question when I asked if you could swim. At was if somehow you could swim without actually swimming just by living in Australia. For the life of me, I can't find the post though. It must've been a PM.

^Don't recall. It's to late now, I'm going in the race:)
I could always swim, most people in Aus (born here) can. It's just most of us don't use it often, therefore one lap can be a struggle after you leave high school (the last time I was swimming).

Resting resting resting. Slow bike ride to work, I'm taking it in to get tuned.

I'll swim in my budgie smugglers, then put my bike pants on, then take em off and run in my shorts then.
