One more tip:
One medium head (2-1/2 pounds) of green cabbage yields 9 cups shredded raw and 7 cups cooked. The top portion of the cabbage head is more tender and shreds easier than the bottom. If it is practical, cut the head horizontal and use the top, raw in salads and slaw and use the bottom half in cooked recipes.

Detour

I tried the dance but once I was squating I realized there was no way I was going to get my legs out from underneath me without falling.
So cabbage it is. I might ask my husband to make it for me. He seems really good and making recipes that actually taste good off the top of his head.

I tried the dance too!!! Good thing the blinds were down or the neighbors would have been laughing their fool heads off.
I even got my teen to try it. He couldn't do it either!
Though I did tell him that if he did it for a minute that I would. Guess I was hoping he would guilt me into it! LOL
Cabbage here I come. Oh Boy!

Sorry V and Brandy, I just picked one from the choices....this way Kimberly can make our team thread. Hope none of you were too set on one (I doubt it since we all slacked a bit on this end!)

Haha this is great.....I just saw my mom a couple days ago and she sent me with a BUNCH of cabbage (we're Indian so it's initially boiled then seasoned and peas are added)....and I LOVE IT! This will be nice for me :)

I could change the detour to drink your weight in kilos in oz of vodka instead. :D

The cabbage must be boiled, keeping with the Russian tradition. It need not be eaten in one sitting--you can spread it out over the week. 5 cups raw--not cooked.

That should answer everyone's questions. Sorry I didn't do it sooner, but I've been super busy today. :)

Tarrish I'll leave it up to you and Kgirl to pick a name for our team. I tried thinking of some and couldn't. I'm glad you are creative to think of several. Hope you got my PM.

Cabbage eaters who hate cabbage, just a tip, make some colcannon. You can hardly tell you are having boiled cabbage that way. (As long as you are not carb-phobic.)

Boil and mash a large potato (however you normally would). Shred and boil 1 c. cabbage. Mix into mashed potato. Add either a few strips crumbled bacon or a couple ounces ham. Sprinkle with scallions. Eat!

I love colcannon, and this is a perfect opportunity to eat it.

(If you are cooking for more than one, just google colcannon and you'll get a bigger recipe. This one only serves one, maybe two if you don't want much.)

Thanks Ambalove!
I have been worried as to exactly how I was going to eat 5 cups of boiled cabbage.
Your recipe sounds delish and I am definately NOT a carb-phobic.

Here's the full recipe for the interested:

Irish Colcannon (serves 8 as a side, 4-6 as an entree)

2 pounds potatoes, scrubbed
2 sticks butter (can be greatly reduced without much impact)
1 1/4 cups hot milk (I use broth and it is fine)
Freshly ground black pepper
1 head cabbage, cored and finely shredded (can sub kale for cabbage, but that would defeat the point of the detour!)
1 (1-pound) piece ham or bacon, cooked the day before
4 scallions, finely chopped
Chopped parsley leaves, for garnish

Steam the potatoes in their skins for 30 minutes. Peel them using a knife and fork. Chop with a knife before mashing. Mash thoroughly to remove all the lumps. Add 1 stick of butter in pieces. Gradually add hot milk, stirring all the time. Season with a few grinds of black pepper.
Boil the cabbage in unsalted water until it turns a darker color. Add 2 tablespoons butter to tenderize it. Cover with lid for 2 minutes. Drain thoroughly before returning it to the pan. Chop into small pieces.

Put the ham in a large saucepan and cover with water. Bring to the boil and simmer for 45 minutes until tender. Drain. Remove any fat and chop into small pieces.

Add cabbage, scallions, and ham to mashed potatoes, stirring them in gently.
Serve in individual soup plates. Make an indentation on the top by swirling a wooden spoon. Put 1 tablespoon of butter into each indentation. Sprinkle with parsley.

Thanks for the recipe, Amber!

Tyly--you're amazing. I didn't think anyone would be able to do that.

The deadline to sign up and post a team name is looming--basically up until the end of Thursday. If you've already signed up and haven't told me your team name, I'll make up one for you..lol. So far there are 2 teams without a name, and I'm still waiting for Blancita to join AmyRB and MissLadyBug. If Cita doesn't pop in before the end of tomorrow, Geovicsha will be on their team instead. :)

Well, I tried the dance last night..with my boyfriend as a witness..I was even going to have him videotape me doing it and post it on here for all of you to see how ridiculous I looked if I was to succeed, but after 30 seconds, my knee gave out and I was on the couch for the rest of the evening with a bag of ice.

Sooo, I'm doing the cabbage.

I don't mind at all. I like that one!! I'm sorry for slacking on the name thing. I was rushed to the emergency room on Tuesday, and didn't get home until Wednesday night, and I was on too much morphine... yet still in pain... so I just fell asleep. But thank you for creating one. Dream team is good!!!

Geovischa it is!! Now where's our Aussie stud? He needs to come on over to this thread.

A name for our team? It was gonna be the MILFs but Shannon is a dude. Any suggestions?

I just had a thought about the cabbage...it needs to be boiled right but as long as it is boiled and in a dish it is cabbage in the form of the detour we can eat...

At work we make make cabbage rolls...so we take our meat and fry it up - we add as many and whatever veggies we want and make a healthy meat sauce so to speak - like a spagetti sauce with lots of veggies...them we just mix it all together like one dish - it was actually quite good...like a cabbage stew - i guess ...

Instead of rolling the cabbage into rolls we just added the cabbage to everything else and ate it that way

I dunno - I sound like Im not making much sence but I think I will do this:)

I should be able to do this right as it is still boiled cabbage in a recipe...
