Working Out in the Winter

We're gonna get a blast of cold and a bit of snow (just enough to f**k up the roads) for the next 3-4 days. Lows of -14°C, highs below 0°C. Then it gets warmer again.

Our power went out for an hour this evening. I couldn't get in the garage, and I couldn't get into the house either ... electronic systems suck. I drove to a Starbucks and sat there until my friend called me to say the power came back on :)

Hmmm. That has absolutely nothing to do with my original post.

My brain has too many tangents. It needs more sines and cosines :D

I've actually been thinking about doing that, ff :) [re: buying an ergo]

But I also need to keep up my weightlifting. I can't give that up. It's a big part of my workouts ;)

So grab some dumbbells, a stability ball and a bosu and get cracking missy!
Along with an ergo thats all the equipment I need for the programs my fitness coach writes for me! I can tell you right now those workouts are awesome!

Of course living in Australia it's summer time here and the problem is not the cold... its the heat! Its soooo hot and it can be hard to get the energy to move (not having air conditioning or ceiling fans in my house doesnt help) let alone go to the gym. In winter though, its an absolute joy as the temperature is perfect (from a brisk 12ºC to a very, very pleasant 22º).

jealous much?

Yeah, your workouts are incredibly awesome (I don't know how you do them to be quite honest with you). I already have a stability ball, some DBs (I need to get some 20lb and 25lb DBs), and I need to get a BOSU ball. Then I'd have to follow your workouts to the letter, Sam ;)

No. Why would I be jealous of people who can wear summer clothes for most of the year ... and go to the beach everyday and surf ... and get tanned ... and be outside without having to wear 4 layers of clothing ... and never have to worry about plugging their car in so it starts in the morning ... and ... OMG ... I think I'm going to cry :sad2::sad2:

Just messing with ya :D Yeah, I'm totally jealous ;)

You could always try Oklahoma where yesterday it was cold enough to sleet and snow and today it's in the 60s. Tomorrow it will be 26 and then two days later jump to the low 70s.

You got that right Evo. It's beautiful here right now but yesterday was gross. Spitting rain and sleet. There was a good frost this morning but it's in the 60's now.

The wind is what sucks this time of year. It's 60 but the wind is probably 30mph or so. Will have to decide if I'm going to run outside or stick with the recumbent bike inside tonight.

I've not had a lot of trouble going to the gym/working out in the winter. But, it's not worth losing my life over. So, if it's too bad, I'd stay in and stay warm.

ILM, your boyfriend has to live fairly close. That would probably suffice for a nice winter workout!

Hahahaha! His house is about a 15 minute drive from my house, so it's VERY close. We don't live together, but he has practically been living with me for the past three weeks. I can't see the floor of my bedroom anymore, so I think he's here to stay ;)

Thank goodness I'm not a clean freak. I just keep walking over the pile of clothes that is amassing. I guess I'll have to start doing laundry soon ... :D

(In all fairness, he's been pretty busy, so that's out of character for him. His house is spotless.)

hmm... my spider sense is tingling and telling me that a certain someone is coming up with the weather excuse... is she?

j.k. kinda but ya... certain days is just plain hard to get to the gym and on those days, I would reward myself with some coffee as a pat on the back.

Yeah, your spidey senses are bang on, tic :D I've been known to use the weather excuse, especially if the roads are sheer ice.

I usually end up doing a mini-workout at home on those days. I do feel guilty when I don't go to the gym, though ...

I find it's a lot easier to want to train when it's hot and I'm already sweating or in various states of undress, as opposed to being warm and cozy all bundled up.

I think Calgary would really mess up my triathlon training :) "Bike" would become "snowmobile", "run"=snowshoes and swim....no thank you...Our all time low this time of year is around 40 and I'm already complaining :D

Sparrow, you'd be surprised at how dedicated our triathletes are. They can't bike outside when the weather and roads are really crappy, so they purchase indoor trainers for that. They still run because we have gear to put on our running shoes so we don't slide on the ice, and even when it's -30°C, I still see people running. Lastly, there are triathlon swimming classes that run all year (I've heard those are brutal).

If we can't do something outside, we find a way to do it inside ;)

You don't have to get out and shovel three feet of snow before taking your car out on super icy roads going downhill all the way to the gym :D You're lucky!

We get weather so cold it will freeze your skin in less than 30 seconds. With the wind chill, we often dip down to -40 or -45°C.

It's tough to get motivated when the police are telling you to stay home because the roads are too treacherous and the cold temperatures make it too dangerous to leave the house ;)

Brrrrrrrrr!
If you don't like the weather, wait ten minutes.:yelrotflmao:

Every Year I would always wait for the temperature to get around -40 because thats when the students are let to have the day off from school. :)Kids would still be playing outside even in that weather. :) Does that happen in Calgary every year too?

Everything you said here seems normal to me, except for the police(RCMP eh? lol) telling anyone to stay home.

If you need motivation then think of it as a challenge. You always challenge yourself in the gym anyways, right?

The only time kids are told to stay home from school is when the buses can't travel on the roads to pick them up :D And sometimes the parents are still expected to drive the kids to work on those days. We rarely stay home here. It's stupid.

The police do suggest that if people don't have to go outside on the roads, then don't, and that's relayed to us on the 6:00pm and 11:30pm news. That's when the roads are a sheet of ice, the police have had to deal with 250 accidents within a couple of hours, and we've run out of ambulances.

I do try to challenge myself in the gym ... but sometimes I take it easy ;)

So we're getting a Siberian Express this weekend. This is one reason why it's tough to get motivated to drive to the gym (temperatures are in Celsius):

It's not even winter yet ...

I don't mind winter, and I actually downright love it when it snows, but I couldn't handle those temps. How many months do you deal with "cold" weather?

About 12 :D

Seriously? We usually have about 4 weeks of brutally cold weather (not all together). This year might be different, though.

I don't hibernate. I just go into a state of torpor. That way, I can pretend to function at work. Kinda like what I do the rest of the year as well ... :D

Actually, Canada is a huge country. Vancouver and Victoria have very temperate climates. The east can get some brutal snow falls.

Calgary is smack dab on the eastern slopes of the Rockies, and we get chinook winds. That makes winter much easier to deal with because we know the cold weather won't last and that in a day or so the temperature will be 10-15°C after being -30°C 24 hours earlier.

But that's when everybody gets migraines from the radical pressure change.
