Protein: Soy or Whey?

I read in one of the threads that apperently soy protein isn' all that great and that whey protein is better. However, I heard at a doctors office, that whey protein is only good if you want to build muscle, but if you have a health condition like diabetes or high cholesterol, they recommend soy protein. Also, when going to the grocery store, one is in the supplement section and the other one with the weight loss products. I can't remember which is where, I have to check next time. In the meantime, can anyone help me out here. Currently I am using soy protein, but if it's not healthy then I might as well switch:rolleyes:

HI Lisa,

what I have found out so far is that those two are recommended for different things. The Whey Protien is for building muscle whereas the Soy Protein is recommended when you have a health condition like diabetes or high cholesterol. I am going to try and find out more and keep you posted.

I Need a protein supplement that's not for Bodybuilders as I mostly do aerobic stuff. Want to conveniently and cheaply use some supplement to boost my protein to carb ratio to help me lose weight and keep blood sugar low.(I lost 17 lbs in last 33 days by switching to healthy, balanced diet and pleny exercise.) Does anyone have any recommendations. I just purchased Naturemade "Soy Free Protein Bosster". Is it a good way to bump my protein from 15% to 30% or will just be adding fat if dont lift weights.?
Thanks for any input.

Hi, I use a soy protein shake as well as myoplex and myoplex lite, they all taste great and its somewhat lower in carbs, the myoplex's give you a bigger boost of minerals and vitamins too. Most of these are pretty low in fat so i dont think you would have to worry about putting on extra weight. Congrats on your weight loss too very nice results!

thanks

thanks Fitski,
Is myoplex whey protein? I hear whey is the best as long as I do a bit of strength traininga as well. I am lactose intolerant, so i hope myoplex or whey wont be a problem.

the myoplex's are 99% lactose free, but not made from whey protein, also whey proteins have about 20% lactose in them, the best ones are usually around 10% lactose in them. So you might want to stay away from the whey, probably the best thing is to go into a store and start checking the labels.

Should I drink protein shakes?

I read in a magazine (Women's Health) that women should drink whey protein shakes. I had always thought of them as something for guys who are trying to gain bulk. My boyfriend drinks them religously but he's dying to be huge. I'm just getting back into working out, I've been on and off for about 6 months now. I have a good bit of muscle already from back in my cheering days in high school. From experience the best way for me to lose weight is running, but I know the more muscle you have the more fat you burn. My biggest fear is that I'll start getting big, I have a large frame to begin with and I have fairly big legs... I have cheerleader/gymnast legs. After I quit cheering and I lost some muscle my dad made a comment about me looking like a girl again and that's always made me incredibly self consious about getting too muscular. So.. should I drink them or not?

Save your money. Protein shakes might provide “quality protein” but we do not need all that. Sure, maybe if you are constantly on the go and have trouble finding a meal of decent quality. For the most part, you can get all the “quality protein” you need from real foods. Anyone who tells you otherwise is just trying to sell you something that you do not need.

As far as your fear of muscle – Some people develop muscle very easily while others struggle. This is primarily based on genetics. I would not totally eliminate resistance training from your program, just monitor your progress and make appropriate adjustments to your intensity level.

Your goal should me muscle maintenance not necessarily muscle gain.

My wife and I have a protein shake every morning for breakfast, not because we "should" or "need to" but rather because it is a very healthy and convenient choice we make. I'd far rather have my cafe mocha protein shake than carbo-loaded cereal or even a healthy egg omelet. Protein is important in improving your body composition, which is a key in losing weight and keeping it off for life, but there are many ways to increase the protein in your diet and decrease the empty calories -- protein shakes are just one of many choices for doing that.

What I was told, Whey protien is not that great for Women, Women are better of drinking Soy protien shakes. I myself just drink Soy milk instead of Cow milk. But I'm not female either.

I haven't read any indications that whey protein is not that great for women. Depending on which expert you ask, extra soy is considered either good or bad for women, and the answer may even depend on how old the woman is. However, that's all based on positions with respect to soy.

I have never heard about drinking protein shakes being bad for woman. I have a protein shake and a bowl of oatmeal almost everyday for breakfast. I like the convenience and I haven't been bulking up or getting bigger. I am trying to loose weight just like anyone else and I am a female. This is the third time I am trying to loose weight because of having kids and protein shakes have help me loose the weight the prevous two times and I am in the middle of trying to loose it the third and last time. You can get protein from other sources but protein shakes are great since I am a busy mom and I work from home as well.

very few people that don't work hard at it achieve their daily recommended intake of protein, so a protein shake can't hurt. But, like anything else, if you have too much, the excess gets converted to fat or is just flows right through. Soy protein is better than whey protein, but for health reasons, not for muscle reasons. However, i can't remember exactly what those reasons are or where i've read it.

I think the main reason so many magazine were pushing the protein issue is because a lot of women don't eat enough red lean meats. But now a lot of women are on Atkins and are getting too much for their livers to process.

I doubt many folks following the Atkins program need be seriously concerned about getting adequate protein intake. By the same token, folks following many other popular diet programs (including Weight Watchers) should be very conscious of how much protein they're getting, and be sure they're significantly exceeding the minimum daily requirement of 50 gm - 60 gm. (Many folks feel that those minimum are far far below what the actual minimums should be, so folks should be sure to exceed at least those minimums.)

well whey protein is used so much because it is absorbed so fast. when mixed with water its utilized in about 2 hours so thats why its so good after a workout. when mixed with milk it takes a little longer. Just look at your daily protein intake, if its at about .7-.8 grams of protein per lb of body weight then you really dont need to be drinking it. and you dont have to worry about getting big, you would have to be eating about 500 more calories than you burn daily and your protein would have to be in the range of 1.3-2 grams of protein per lb of body weight to start putting on mass. protein shakes are good but protein from real foods is much better, bodybuilders use them because its hard to get enough protein in a day. I'm currently taking around 220 grams of protein daily and I couldn't make it if i didn't have protein shakes.

I would recommend either Optimum Nutritions brand, 100% whey Protein, that is the cheapest one per serving you'll find. I got a 10 lb bag with around 160 serving and it cost like 46 bucks plus a few bucks for shipping, this also comes in 5 and 2 lb tubs too though, and it has something in it called lactase which is really suppose to help in the digestion for lactose intolerant. Another one I personally like the taste much more is champion Nutritions pure whey. I think 26 bucks for 5 lbs. but it also has no lactase thing in it. My personal opinion is soy is crap but hey thats me lol. myoplex is good, but much more expensive. And I very very highly recommend buying from , your shipment will get to you in like 3 days and they sell just about everything cheaper than the competition.
