it was only out to the car, but what a pretty site early this morning...
here is a tip i picked up some years ago.
can you tell if the moon is waxing or waning?
this works, about 90% of the time... right after the moon rises and just before it sets, it won't work as well and if it's very close to a full moon, it will be more difficult to tell which side is in the shadow.
1) look at the side of the moon that is curved and and copy the shape with either your left hand (it will make a C ) or with your right hand (a backwards C ).
2) take your other hand and close the gap in the "C" shape.
3) slide that second hand up or down a little so if it's on the right side, you make a lower case "a" or on the left side you see a lower case "b".
4) get it?
if you see an "a", you're looking at the moon 'after' the full moon (it's waning... getting newer).
if you see the "b", you're looking at the moon 'before' the full moon (it's waxing... getting fuller).
as the moon gets closer to setting as you can see in this picture, a little, or when it just rises, it almost always has a full or empty bowl shape and often it's hard to tell, especially if it's closer to full than closer to new. it's tipped a little, but i can still tell by this picture the new moon is probably tomorrow or the next day.
