What Birth Control Do You Use?

DIANE 35. It's actually for acne but because I wasn't having sex anyways, it works for me. It's just to regulate my period, and helped with some ovarian cysts I used to have.

im on Yaz... (different from Yasmin, but related..) It REALLY helped with moods. I was soooo down and out all the time and getting worked up about little things and this was like magic. it balanced some things out. It helped with the cramps that were getting more intense, and the main purpose for me getting on it was mostly regulating things as i had missed a few and was not pregnant. Anywho, its got my stamp of approval. I cant say as to whether it provokes a gain or any other side effects cuz i wasnt paying attention to weight then. but its benefits are worth it to me.

Well, my doctor recently put me on Demulen- because I stopped havin periods about two years ago. I have been on Metformin since early July and it hasn't helped with my periods so she put me on Demulen to make me have regular periods. I started three weeks ago, I am suppose to get a period next week. So we will see, I am sure it will work because I have used Provera twice and it worked just for that one time. Hopefully this will help regulate my period and I can come off of it and be able to have one on my own.

I asked her if it would make me gain weight, she said no that it was a low dosage, and it probably wouldn't make me have any side effects except maybe breakthrough bleeding. I am not sure how well it is as a contraceptive, I have to do a little research.

Howdy

Well we use P.C.O.S (Her) and low sperm count (me/him). As for side effects. Well wait a second....I think they are the side effects...of being overweight.

But like others, our best defense of pg. is no sex.

I'm on mirena... and so far can't really tell that I've gained any weight bc of it. Sounds like one person so far says it effects weightloss/gain but the docs keep saying it doesn't  I guess its different for everybody

Condoms (male), but we don't use them straight away (usually half way through or to 'finish up')so there is a dangerous chance I could get pregnant, which is silly of us. I don't take the pill either.

There are hundreds of stories on the net regarding weight gain/stomach bloat due to the Mirena. I had mine removed as I was having lots of trouble losing weight. The weight hasn't come off though since getting off the Mirena a few months ago though, so I dunno. Lots of people on the net did end up losing lots of weight once they got off of it.

The bottom line is this: when hormones are being introduced into your body, whether through a pill or a device that releases hormones directly into your uterus like the Mirena, there will be an effect of some sort on the body. Our body is governed by our hormones so any change to our normal hormonal levels will definitely cause some changes to our bodies, whether noticeable or not.

As to the period, mine was really heavy for about the first 3 cycles, and then became literally nonexistent. I thought this was a bonus at the time, but in hindsight I dont like the idea of not shedding the lining of my uterus on a regular monthly basis. I started wondering if the bloated feeling was a bunch of dead cells just stuck there. Euuwwww. But I have no idea..

Why dont you at least make sure to use the condom the entire time during the week when you could be ovulating? If you have a regular cycle, count back 14 days from the first day of your period and then make sure to use condoms for the week before that. You are fine once you've ovulated. Without charting your temperature, guestimating the day you're ovulating is a rather unscientific method, but at least you'd be taking less of a risk than you are now.

I notice on your ticker you've lost a good bit of weight... was all of that lost while on mirena? and since you've plateued you got off of it?

Ok, Maybe TMI alert. So You have been warned!

Alright, in my above post- I said I had just started Demulen ( Zovia- its just the generic.) It is a VERY low dose. I have no had any weight gain. SO thats good, but my first cycle has been horrible, mainly because I haven't had a natrual one or anything close to it in two years, minus provera- but when I used provera it was never this bad. I think the main reason I haven't seen any big side effects of it yet, is because its such a low dosage. I would suggest starting out on a lower dosage of a birth control, to see what exactly it will do to your body- The only side effects I am having are "womanly" ones, which is what I need anyways. So , so far I would recommend Demulen. I would start out with a low dosage though.

burrito (I seem to eat one every day for lunch lately), all of my weight except 10 lbs is weight I put on while I was pregnant. So everything I've taken off is pregnancy weight. It was HARD AS HELL to get it off, but it did come off slowly while I was on the Mirena, which I got inserted 2 months after having the baby. I've been on a plateau for the past 11 months now, and I got the Mirena out about 3 months ago. So I dont know what's going on! But if you do a search on the net you will be shocked at how many stories there are about weight gain and stomach bloat, which then goes away after the Mirena is removed. It was a great form of BC in that I never had to think about it at all, I'll give it that.

hmm... I really hope this isn't the case for me! My insurance didn't cover it so I shelled out $500 for mirena! Comparatively for a span of 5 years it was more cost effective than other birth control, and yes much easier. My period has been hell though... and lasting about 3 weeks thus far with random spotting... so yeah I really hope that will subside. I'm concerned though about being able to lose weight while on it. It's hard enough of a feat as it is, but with a chemical possibly hindering it even more???? DAMN... no good! I'm gonna discuss it further with my doc and give it a while longer before I opt out of it...

thanks for your info tho

I'm on Ovral. I was on lo-ovral for several years, until I had a lot of irregular bleeding. The doctor attributed it to stress, but moved me to the non-low type anyway at the start of last year. I've been on Ovral since I started losing weight, and didn't have any trouble 'til the past few months, when the irregular bleeding started again.

I talked to the doctor about it, and he said weight loss is probably playing a big part in that. However he wouldn't change the BC until I get to a weight I'm happy with, and want to stay at, so I wouldn't change now, then again later, and again, etc. Makes sense, but it's annoying for now.

I'm not on BC, but when I was I was on the patch. Whether it was the BC or just going to college, I gained a lot of weight. I'm still trying to get it off.

I use Zovia (pill form). I went off it it 10 months ago to see if it would help me lose weight and it did not. All that happened was I got acne on my face, back, and chest....eeewwww. I thought after a few months of going off my body would re-adjust to the new hormonal levels and my acne would clear up.

Bottom line, I went back on Zovia 2.5 weeks ago cuz I'm 33 and can't be having pimples like a teenage!! LOL Weight never did come off just from stopping the pill....good luck to ya!!

I am glad someone else takes Zovia (Demulen) - You say you gained weight on it? I just started it , this is my first cycle- I am about to start my second. I haven't noticed any weight gain so far.

I can't say that it made me gain weight. BUT...I have been told that in general BC makes you gain weight so when I went off I somehow thought miraculously that 10-15lbs would melt off. Clearly not the case...once again proving that the BC did not contribute to my weight gain in the first place. LOL Must have been all the yummy food I ate...
