What are you training for?

Ladies, gentlemen and pre-ops. Some of you regulars around here are constantly posting your helpful advice around. But I realised something, I don't even know what half of you are training for. So I thought, make a thread about it! Could you tell the forum a bit about: What your training for, eg. girls, boys, powerlifting, body building, marathon running, general fitness etc, how long you been training etc?

So me:

Used to play tennis to a high standard until last year. Play recreational. Do athletics, and weight train. Mainly for sports in general, but also because I enjoy it. :D not cause it gets me attention. ;)

Im not an athlete. But i train for strenght, power, and ofcource, some looks ;)
Been going at it for about 1.5 years now if i remember correct (it could be a bit more..)

I do oly lifting stuff (power cleans, snatch, etc) but i also like to do the powerlifting stuff, like squat, bench and deadlift.

Karky, how come it doesn't have you listed at bottom of page as online? They didn't 10 minutes ago either.

This is a great thread. I'm very interested see the responses.

I have been a competitive Oly Lifter, Power Lifter, and Amateur Strongman. The first time I lifted weights was when I was 12. First Oly. contest was when I was 14. I have dabbled in MMA, mostly BJJ and MT. But as it turns out, I am not that tough. I took a knee to the face a couple of times and that was about it. I have to put thoughts together in 10 years.

After that I took a year off, from all working out. Then I started training again about 6 weeks ago. (You can see the workouts in the journal inspired by evo. Thanks evo:D)

My goal is to avoid all of the training mistakes I have made in the past, learn more and more about how to make my body adapt. And.......Well.......I guess I don't really care about anything except getting stronger.

The specific goals are -

Become freaky strong, Only this time
  1. Stay under 290lbs.
  2. Keep my nutrition in check.
  3. Stay in better shape so that I can recover better and train harder.
  4. Keep core and stability training in the forefront of my routines.

That is all. I have found the forum really helpful and I am addicted to it like crack. It is one of the major reasons I have started training again.

I'm not training for any particular event, basically just because I like to. It's a hobby for me. I forget about everything that went on during the day as soon as I step foot in the gym...

i train so that i can make everyone i love proud. my father would love nothing more than seeing his son becoming strapping, powerful and vigorous. i want to make my little brother to be able to gaze at me and know that i will always be there to be his lance and armor. i will under no event or circumstance let him down. i wont let anything pierce this barrier.
i want to go the distance and be remembered. because there is no doubt that this is my place and my passion. my fervor and craze. and even though i may not be strong, my zeal makes me relentless.

I started training because I was fat and gross, and I wanted to be less fat and less gross. And now I love working out, crazy right?

Now I cant get enough of nutrition and fitness and am considering a degree in Exercise Science as well as Business.

To look good naked...

Oh yeah, and that health thing too I suppose... especially since I started at 354 lbs and am down to around 238.

Hmm.... Mostly for power since I'm a powerlifter, but...

Fall - Football
Winter - Wrestling
Spring - Powerlifting
Summer - Look good/football

I train to be like Batman.

I'm not kidding when I say that -- I'm in it for phyiscal performance perfection. I want to make demands on my body to do whatever I say, and no matter how hard, fast, or heavy, I want my body to listen.

i train for fun and for my health. i eventually want a 6 pack but interestingly enough my gf actually wants me to maintain a slight beer belly....

For me it was originally back pain, and my wife saying I was too old to get a six pac (age related skin elasticity problems, slower metabolism than in youth, lower testosterone levels, longer recuperation, she BLAH< BLAH>BLAH about). Now, I feel like and look like (in body but not face) persons half my age, and KNOW against the population as a whole, I am one of the FEW nearly 46 year old males, that in fact has a six pack (with a few tweaks left to do), and this DRIVES ME. I have walked it, had the tribulations that come along with it, know how it feels when you try something and it doesnt work well (and know what it takes to change the course), and WANT TO help others do it too. Yep, Im over the hill for most persons on this forum, of course I lost a step (i cant control that), of course I need longer rest days (I cant control that--age related), so I worry ONLY on the things I CAN control or have control over, and I m driven driven to achieve the goal I had set out, and WILL NOT GIVE UP. Compared to what I was, I feel better than I have in years, it has literally reversed years of deteriation (in just over a year of hard work), I feel more energetic (though im in a caloric deficit), more youthfull and alert, and this DRIVES ME. It is true training right (with the correct geneitics and being healthy) can change your body and soul. The body is truely accumulation of its past history.

coz i can...

*Edit*

Might as well write up my reasons...Well basically its always been an interest of mine to big, like i remember as a little kid watching athletes and seeing their big impressive bodies and wanting to be like them. When i was about 10 years old i'd go around the house and try to find heavy objects and lift them in hopes of gaining some benefit lol. in 2004 i was in grade 10 (15 years old) and we started talking about principles of training, and loads etc. in my human movements class. I remember acing that exam because i couldn't stop reading about it, i just found it really interesting. After that exam i was on the net all the time looking for ways to train and improving my knowledge of what everything means and then at the beginning of 2005 i started doing some solid cardio (3-6 times/week x 30 minutes). And a few months later started lifting and never looked back. Last year i finished school and i'm currently doing a fitness and coaching and i think i've learnt more in the last four months of college than in 2 years of surfing the web!...That's my story, for those that bothred reading :p.

Why do i train?
I find it fun and interesting
something to do! - I think this is an underrated aspect of training
Look and feel better - Everyone has this somewhere in their list of why they train.
It might sound silly but i often compare myself to MMA fighters. Specifically UFC because i don't really watch Pride or KOTC etc.
I havn't played sport in over a year so my training isn't sport specific. Basically i just like training.

I started because I was fat and out of shape. I then started moving towards training to compete in some athletic activity. I decided on the Highland Games and started training primarily towards getting stronger so the implements went further.

I've always been pretty athletically built, but was also skinny-fat; and I knew my body had a lot of potential. I was initially in it for the looks, but soon realized that I needed to get strong because of how weak and frail I was. I used to lift with 5-10 lb. dumbbells, because that was the most my body was able to handle at the time. I did play some sports, but just trained on the side for fun.

I started lifting weights at a time I had really low self-esteem (around 13). I wasn't happy with the way my face looked, so I was hoping I could at least turn myself into a butterface. Better than nothin'.

I'm 18 now, and am in the best shape of my life.

I'm pretty much the same as Lean Bean, I was a skinny-fat guy who had hit 25 with low self esteem and realising my best years were passing me by. I guess my aim too was to upgrade to a male butter face :)

I started out just wanting to bulk up a bit, I would have rather just been fat than as skinny as I was, I was 6'2" and my weight over the years varied from between 10 1/2 - 12 stone. It's almost 12 months exactly since I started out and mainly thanks to the nutrition info on here I've bulked up to over 15 stone (97 kg).

Now I think I mainly workout to compete with myself, I can't stand the idea of not getting stronger anymore. My aim now is to be able to lift more than anyone else, I don't care about appearance so much now and just want to be the strongest

I am weight training purely just for looks.

Also want to get in some sort of modelling (I want to make my ex-girlfriends jealous but shhhhhh!)

When I was younger (11-15) I was really skinny and didn't think I could do anything about it, I also thought I would never get any attention from women.

But now all of that is changing.....
