Weight-Loss What affects does hard alcohol have on a dieting body?

Weight-Loss
Thanks for the information guys. You are reaffirming what I was thinking. I am going to have to really cut alcohol out of my diet. I do alright with not eating bad foods while drunk, but really the enormous amount of calories consumed on an average night of drinking would make it too difficult to lose weight. The hard part will be not drinking when those I am spending time with are drinking.

This will be my Down Fall as well I have always had Wine with my dinner.... Now I am trying to have it just twice a week... but then I find I want more of it than I probably should have...

The killer in alcohol is carbs, not just calories. Your body needs at least some calories just to function. If you eat a piece of meat and drink a few beers instead of eating a potato or something, you're basically just drinking your calories & carbs instead of eating them.

If you drink beer, stick to 'light' beers. They have about 1/3 the carbs and 30-40 less calories than regular beers. And avoid the dark beers, or any of the the mixed flavored crap like mike's hard lemonades or margaritas cuz you're talking 300 calories a pop. Mix liquor with low calorie or diet drinks instead of coke or fruit juice mixes.

If you are careful you can keep each beverage under 100 cals, which is much better than a regular coke or pepsi which are 100 cals per 8 ounce serving vs a 12 lite beer that is around 90 calories.

Guinness Draught, which is incredibly dark, has less calories than Sam Adams Light. So, you can't really say this. Plus, the amount you drink has alot to do with it too. Personally I'd rather have one pale ale from Breckenridge Brewery than two Mich Ultra's... I get a better buzz, consume less calories, and I'm more satisfied.

Personally I drink fairly often, but usually limit the number of drinks. However, last Wednesday I had a few Blue Moon's, an Amstel Light, two 20-24 ounce Sapporo's, a bourbon barrel ale, and a couple of others that I can't remember... then last night I drank half a fifth of Canadian Mist whiskey mixed with regular Coke. I still lost weight. Crazy.

How does alcohol affect weight loss?

I know beer more or less counter acts weight loss, is it the same with other alcoholic drinks?

It also makes you eat more.

Trust me - I KNOW!
;)

Aside from that though, I'm sure you're asking for a more specific answer, that I just have - I hope someone does though :D

I was told by a weight trainer at work.. that drinking does not help you in your weight loss.. that beer is worse then wine.. Again.. it all depends in how much we drink.. I hardly drink.. so he said it wouldn't bother me much.. But everything needs to be done in moderate when loosing weight..and trying to get in shape.. Common Sense.. I guess..

Any alcoholic drink, when drank enough of, will mess up your blood sugar. Beer has a bad reputation because people will sit down and have 10 beers, and if that's 150 calories each, that's 1,500 calories just off of the beer. But, take 10 shots of Bailey's Irish Cream and you're at 450% of your RDA of cholesterol and just has 940 calories. So, other things can still be pretty bad. Mainly depends on how much you drink.

heres a recipie for a low carb margarita I found on ediets.com

IF you have good tequila, you don't even need to go that far. Really all you need is Rose's Lime Juice and a good tequila. Going beyond that, triple sec or orange curacao works well. Actually, with extremely good tequila, all you need is a slice of lime and some salt. Most of the extra crapola is to cover up the crappiness of crapola tequila. Good tequilas can be drank straight on the rocks without the WHAAANNNGGGG of the $20 (or less) Cuervo or that other junk. $35 a bottle (a fifth) tequila is about the cheapest I'll go. Cheap tequila is filled with impurities - other liquor that gets you drunk but isn't real tequila. The real good stuff is $55-$120 per bottle. That stuff is pure. Cuervo isn't.

I too like to have a few drinks a week, I am just going to controll what and how much I drink. For instance, this weekend instead of drinking 5-6 miller lite, I had a 2 Mich ultras and 1 rum and diet coke. It was a lot easier than I thought. Good Luck

ive taken onto the straightedge lifestyle. hence the x's surrounding my name. personally i think that stopping drinking will help me. after drinking , i dont think many people want to move far let alone excercise and u get the munchies like crazy when u wake up.

I agree with you Buddy.. But it all depends how much ya drink.. I mean if ya sit down with a loved one or a friend.. have a couple of beers.. (2 - 3) or a glass of wine.. won't really hurt ya.. But if ya go out with the boys..and go on a toot.. yeah it's gonna hurt ya big time.. in everything..

well im 16 so theres none of this having a drink with the loved ones stuff.. even when i had a girl.. i was still drinking with the boys.. with her at the same time so u know, going thru a carton of rum and cola every 2-3.5 days wasnt really helping. plus on a big night i could go thru 3/4 to a full carton of alcohol.

As others have stated, the alcohol will have an effect on your weight as well as the effect it has on all of your other senses. I have only had 1 mixed drink since Jan 1, so I don't worry too much about it too much; but thinking about your question has made me come to the same conclusion that I have read elsewhere for other specialty items when dieting.

Paraphrasing here: If you know you are going to your niece's birthday party in a few days, cut back on your caloric intake the day before and the day after to accommodate the cake and ice cream that you consume, and/or increase your exercise activity.

Many alcoholic drinks contain lots of energy. Calories from alcohol are also added to energy from the food eaten during the day. An interesting point to note is alcohol cannot be stored so its energy is metabolized until all alcohol is cleared from the body. It also means the body is limited to burning stored fat when drinking alcohol. People who drink frequently may have increased potential for weight gain because;

1. A higher percentage of the energy from food eaten during the day may be converted and stored as fat.
2. Less energy from body fat stores can be used while alcohol is in the bloodstream.

Its possible to lose weight and still enjoy a drink the key is moderation. Do not eat less food so you can drink regularly and lose weight. Alcohol metabolism uses up essential nutrients which are obtained in sufficient amounts from food!

I do not drink at all :p

I've been told that it does, and my sis and I had this discussion today as she has a rather large friend who's mum wont let her eat rubbish - and the girl herself hates junk food!!

Buuut...............she LOVES to go out and drink! She can easliy have a bottle a night and so in 3 years she has gone from a 10 to around a UK size 18/20 and its all around her middle!! I have warned her that is not good, if it was on her ass it woul dbe a bit better, but this person has serious Orange and Cocktail sick look going on :(.

Also, and this justmay be other factors..............when my OH come back oon shore and we are going out I put on a few lbs as I am drinking, and I dont drink when he is away. I also dont eat Pizza, chips, ice cream, puddings etc etc, but he likes those so I do when he is here.

But yeah..........alcohol not good, not good for toxins either I believe, keeps them all trapped in yer liver(or was it kidneys?!) cant remember
