Weight Loss Tattoo?

What a neat thread! I love tattoos and yes they are getting trendy. Lots of my highschoolers get things mostly because they can rather than the meaning behind it. I personally have 5 tattoos which all mean a great deal to me. My favorite is on the back of my neck and it is "happiness" in Chinese. I always want a reminder of being happy because I had the tendency to get myself down in highschool. I didn't get the tat until after college. I researched to find the perfect looking symbol and then considered it for a year and a half before I committed to it. I think there is something very special in picking an image that will be with you forever!
Miracle I think the butterfly is a beautiful idea. Have you heard of the glow in the dark ink? It is pretty much invisible on your skin when you get it but it glows in the dark... thought that might be a neat idea for a white butterfly. White showed up on my skin pretty well.
And I don't remember who said tattoos don't hurt but your full of it!!! lol It depends on where you get them I think. I have one below the ankle bone on the outside of my foot and that hurt like hell!!! I have one on the inside of my wrist as well and that wasn't as bad but I wouldn't say it didn't hurt. Different people feel different amounts of pain in difference places. It all depends on the individual:)
Also a lot of the times if there is something you want but can't find a pic you can go to a good tattoo artist and they can design what you want for a fee. That way you can get something custom and designed by you even if you have no artistic abilities.
Good luck with your tattoo!

^ I'm about to get an A Level in Art and Design so I have to be artistic. :D

I like the glow in the dark ink idea.

My fiance is a tattoo artist and I'm sure he'd be more than happy to give you some ideas.
His website is .
He's got a lot of pictures up on his site of tattoos he's done so maybe looking through those will give you some ideas as well.
I know how tough it is to decide on a tattoo, so good luck with everything and keeps us informed of what you're going to get!

Forty five years old, and still a tattoo virgin. I keep telling myself that I'm going to get one - to mark my weightloss, and to remind me not to turn back. Perhaps its that mid-life crisis thing too? The design that I fancy might be a little too unusual. I want something to mark my interest in British prehistory. A widespread design that crops up carved on rocks in North-west Britain, dating to between 3,500 and maybe 5,000 years ago was the 'cup and ring'. I've never seen anyone use one on a tattoo. I've photoshopped something to see what it might look like:

It needs some work, but its the sort of thing that I want. Am I nuts?

I've read through this entire thread twice. I think that if you keep seeing this white butterfly and that it makes you feel safe and reassured to think about getting a white butterfly. So when you feel lost, scared and uncomfortable you can just look at the butterfly and know things will be ok, it would be a sort of safety blanket.

I love tattoos and have 2 myself along with 9 piercings.

My first tattoo I got in April 2007 just because. I was told no tattoos as long as I live at home and when I found out and saw that my parents let my brother who is 3yrs younger than I am get a tattoo I went out and got one myself. I like this but I am having it touched up by my new artisit because it's already fading. This pic is from when it was fresh so the red speckles are blood not ink

This one i got May 2007. I got hooked quick :) Myself and 2 of my female cousins on my fathers side have this same tattoo. We are the only 3 girls with the familys last name. The largest star (green) represents me, the one below it (pink) my oldest cousin and the one below that (purple) the youngest. This one is 7.5in long and goes up and ends on top of my shoudler the pic doesn't show it very well. I have plans to have it finish spilling over my back and across...but thats for thinner days...(the blue star has been fixed and the black lines through the stars finished and doesn't look stupid like that anymore!!)

I'm deffinatly not done yet. I have more I want but I plan on waiting to lose some weight so they don't distort when I do lose weight.

Cute!! I like those lots!

Thanks! I get a lot of compliments on the stars....I've even had ladies tell me "I hate tattoos but yours is beautiful" It kind of deviated from what I wanted but I still love it, it incorperated everything I wanted!:)

I'm getting a tattoo when I reach my goal. The subject matter won't reflect my weight loss but the placement will. I want to get it on my stomach because right now I hate my stomach but once I lose weight, I know I'll want to show it off :)

I got a spray on tattoo today on my hip. It lasts ten days. Didn't hurt, it looks good and it gives me a hint to what it'd be like to have a tattoo.

If you do it, I would say to keep it personal, like a hidden meaning, or else do something defining that is kind of like a rite of passage. As a guy, I can say that if I were approaching a girl who had a tattoo that obviously meant "I used to be fat", I just wouldn't exactly find it very attractive. Not saying that to be mean by any means. A tattoo would be cool, but you don't want to be branded with something obvious like that for the rest of your life. Also think about it in terms of the fact that you aren't even 18 yet... this really shouldn't be a defining moment in your life. Well, that didn't sound right...

What I mean is that, for example... I used to be fat. I don't want anything to remind me of this period in my life. I don't want other people knowing about it. So, I can't imagine getting something that would do both of these things every day. If I were going to get a tattoo, I would get something that reminded me that I'm now every bit of as good as the skinny and fit folks. For example, I have worked all year to get good enough to enter Xterra triathlons, and I have thought about getting a tattoo that went all the way around my arm of the X logo... kind of an "I'm elite now" statement instead of an "I used to be fat" statement.

Basically, if you get one, I say get something that has no reference to your bad old self at all, only your new, good self. That's all I'm getting at.

But she is not talking about getting an "I used to be fat" tattoo. She is not whining about the way her body used to be, I think the idea of the tattoo is to celebrate her achievement and not to lament the past.

I got two tattoos' both have meanings behind them, The one on my ankle has my 1st daughters initial, astro symbol and 11 butterflys going round my ankle which represents her being a november baby.

The one on my lower back is an orchid which is my exoctic birth flower, I plan to add my twins birth flowers either side of it with some surrounding design once I get back to "my pre-pregnancy weight" ....."My first mini goal" :)

I got a tattoo whenever I finished an internship at a salon to become a master stylist. It was very emotional and was something I can always look at and appreciate. Its small script on my wrist that says Love... except I turned the "o" into a pink heart. Its very feminine and most people dont notice it but I know its there. As long as your doing it for yourself, you cant go wrong.

I really just do NOT understand the hating on Kanji symbols or as it was so eloquently put "tramp stamps." I have two Kanji tattoos, one on my ankle, and one on my back, AND a 'tramp stamp', and I love it. If it's not for you, fine, but if it means something to someone, then so be it.

I plan to get a black and gray portrait of a ball python on my shoulder to symbolize strength -- inner, and physical.

The advice I would give to someone getting their first one -- do NOT go too small. It looks stupid, and alot of times the ink will bleed out just a little bit, and the tattoo will appear blurry. Get your tattoo in a size that will appropriately fit the body part.

What a cool idea: Getting a tattoo to celebrate! It sounds like you've already made up your mind about what you want- white butterfly. Where are you going to get it put?
I may do a phoenix rising from the ashes... or is that too common?

I see that the thread is sorta dying out, but I have to put in a word anyway. ;)

I got my second tat at 20, and boy was I stupid! I had some money, some influence [don't ask], and I made a pretty dumb decision. So, now, until I can remove this thing or cover it up, I am branded Rhino. And underneath that, I'm copyrighted [the symbol] '82 [my birth year], which I still think is pretty cool. I have to look at this bad boy, on the outside of my right arm, all the time. Thankfully I put it up high enough to be covered by a shirt sleeve. Sorta...

So, for a first timer, I suggest lots of thought, multiple trips to the parlor where you're getting it done to scope out safety, sterility, and skill [and asks tons of questions], and put that tat somewhere that's not too obvious. Also, take darn good care of that thing. The one on my back is very faded.

Other than that, it's not really painful and it is a rush. Have fun!
