Thanks Misty, 160 is still a little higher than where I'd like to be, but going down feels better than up. Yeah Err, the threat of the gym must have done it.

I spoke with the trainer at the gym about my weight gain yesterday. She said she has worked with lots of people who have had surgery and that my water weight gain did not surprise her at all, and she said she has seen it take 6 months post for the water weight to go. Made me feel a bit better. No change today.
  • August began 161, ended 159, ranged 163 to 159.
  • September began 160, ended 158, ranged 160 to 154.
  • October began 159, ended 158, ranged from 155 to 162.
  • November began 160, ended 153, ranged from 153 to 164.
  • December averaged 156 and ranged from 151 to 159.

It is strange - my arm will inadvertently brush against part of myself and I momentarily find myself confused because it feels like I must have bumped into a stranger. I'm also starting to see some vascularity in my arms - something I haven't had since high school. That is really good, more important than your day to day weight fluctuations. I am sure you will be going down again soon, but you are clearly getting fitter by the day!

Hey Err, isn't that 18.1% the lowest body fat you have seen? And if I remember your age correctly that pushes you below the average range into the ideal! Good for you! You must be feeling well. How much more weight do you plan to lose?

It is, although I'm definitely retaining water (which counts as lean mass) so I think I'm probably around 19% normally. Still, that's about threshold between average and fitness/ideal for my age (39):

My waist to height ratio is still above 0.5, so I need to lose another 1.25-1.5 inches from my waist to dip into the normal range on that metric. And my fat mass index is 6.7 which is over 10% above the normal range for my age & sex. I suspect I need to lose another 6-12 lb of fat before I'm normal on both of those metrics.

Ideally I'm shooting to have a bit over 20 lb of body fat - which would be in the top 25th percentile for my height. If I maintain my lean mass that would be about 11% body fat at around 185-190 lb. Plan B is 15% body fat at around 195-200 lb. Aesthetically my trunk still has *a lot* of visible fat. Relaxed I look like a weight loss "before" picture, not after... With all my running & cycling, my legs are much beefier than normal so that muscle mass skews my overall body fat percentage.

Err, thanks for your detailed answer. I think it is interesting that the average is so far above the ideal BF, I guess the average American is probably overweight. At 39 you can either lose a little more body fat, or wait till next year to make the ideal range, LOL. I suspect some of what you perceive as fat on your belly is loose skin, it is for me. We both will probably carry several pounds of extra skin that can only come off surgically. Hopefully you less than me.

117.2lbs - ugh I worked hard through calorie restriction and doing 6km of walking to get it down. Visiting parents this week, hopefully I am able to keep this up! GW for end of month: I'd love to hit 110lbs but even 112lbs would be good.

Thanks Err, it does feel better, intellectually I knew it was water and would come off, but it still hurts to see a 20+ lb weight gain. I looked on Google and one piece of advice I found was just to not weigh after surgery... Down a little more - I have lost half of the post surgical weight gain now and am in the mid 150s, my comfort zone. It is probably no coincidence that I am feeling better as well, less tired and not so light headed.
