If describing a weight in terms of pounds in the UK - we would also use ounces and stones. I would never normally refer to something as being 14 pounds or more... Ounces are used less often by younger people... In fact - I suspect that some will think of their weight in kilograms and not pounds.
Shopping tends to be done in kilograms nowadays for veg etc. Its quite normal among older people to refer to 4 ounces ham, butter etc.
I think that a lot of schooling is done in just the metric system these days. I'm 60 - when I was young there was a lot of non-metric stuff to get your head around - pounds shilling and pence - stones, pounds and ounces - miles with furlongs...
