I'm soon purchasing a vbulletin forum. Couple of questions to those who know a thing or two:

1. I assume it's better to own than lease?

2. Do you think the phone support is necessary. 1 month of it is 60 bucks.

3. Would you recommend any of these other options shown in the attachment?

Training.fitness has/had a blogging feature. I never saw anyone use it while I frequented there. There is no point with the journal sections.
I assume its the same but can't be sure. In any case, with myspace and freebook no one is going to place much time creating another blog on a specific forum.

I know vbulletin

Hi Steve,

Drop me a line/PM - I know quite a lot now about vbulletin. There's tons of things you can do to make it really work well.

I wrote a post about de-spamming VB at .

You should also look at the threads at

Tons of great mods can be found there. If you are moderately good with code, you don't need phone support - folks answer questions at the forum for you.

Enjoy,

Barbara

(I HATE MYSPACE)- the blogging feature of vbulletin is actually better... because you've got the ability to make entries private - or just have specific people see your blog... Gives you a lot more privacy... It's a bazillion times better than the diary section on this site here because of hte commenting feature....

Vbulletin is fairly easy to set up... and you really don't need much support in it - unless you're doing a database upgrade and they don't happen all that frequently

Thanks for the links. I'll drop you a PM when I've got something to ask, lol. But for a little background on me.... as much as I know about training and fitness.... I know even less than that amount of information with regards to computers, web, and code.

So truthfully I don't even have a question to ask, lol.

I just want my forum to look like m website. I assume the color schemes are pretty customizable. And would I be able to place my logo on top of the forum?

So what happens when I need a database upgrade? Do I just call and pay for that one time help?

Depends - generally it's a software installer they give you -with a set of fairly good instructions on what to follow step by step... and you could do the upgrades yourself...

However - upgrades as we know from this site and vbulletin aren't without glitches.. so test environments are always a good thing and if lacking that -then availability of support is helpful... generally it's a one time flat rate for the call...

Yep, that's called modifying the template:

Hope that helps,

Barbara

My pleasure, Steve. I've learned so much from you and Mal and others I am very happy to return the favor.

Best wishes,

Barbara

My guess is my forum has to be hosted on my own server, huh?

I don't think I can do that with my web hosting site....

Nothing is easy I tell you.

I posted for some assistance over on the homestead forum... we'll see if anyone can offer up advice.

Thanks Mal.

Any web hosting recommendations?

I'm pretty pissed that homestead isn't compatable with vbulletin.

I've been poking all freaking day. I have a headache!!

I've gotten so many different pieces of advice it's ridiculous. I've joined 10 forums and I've gotten advice on all of them... all different, lol.

What most agreed though is that I should leave homestead which really upsets me. Not that I'm in love with it or anything. I just liked how easy it was to use... I didn't need to know any programming/coding (or whatever you call it).

However, people are saying there are a lot of good hosts that have sitebuilder built into their platforms, which is what allows dummies like me to build sites.

I have no problem moving either, even knowing I paid for the year... I'd still move if it was for the good of the business. I just fear I'll lose stuff or have to start over. That would crush me.... I really like what i have.

I've gotten about 12 different recommendations for new hosts, the one that seemed most promising is hostgator simply b/c they have sitebuilder and someone (yea, that's real trustworthy) told me on a forum that they think my site would move over easily without glitch.

Deep breaths... :)

You can download the pages you've created and reupload them to any other site... so all the work you've put in won't be lost...

you might just end up changing some footers on pages but that's not a big deal..

did a google search on web host and php and my sql and site building functionality and came back with

it seems to use front page -- a microsoft product as it's site builder -which is very easy to work with -not fancy - but easy
