The useless Olympic sports

Seriously, does anyone care about any of these?

Synchronized swimming - Might as well have ballet. That's not a knock on ballet, it's just that no one really cares about it. I'm sure these guys work hard yes (wanted to add that bit before Karky yelled at me again) but really, how many of you are sitting home going "man i can't wait for the synchronized swimming!"

BMX - WTF! I had no idea this was even an Olympic sport to begin with. This is just complete bias here as i just don't care for "Xtreme sports" at all. I guess there's a market to be had for this, hence why it's on the card but personally, i don't care for it.

Equestrian - Bunch of rich guys riding horses their horses. I imagine it appeals to upper class people but this is one of the most boring "sports" i've ever seen in my life.

Badminton - Seriously now...

Handball - I don't even know what handball is, but apparently it's popular in Europe. And no, it's not the type you play at school...

Softball - Why do we need softball and baseball?

Fencing - I know absolutely nothing about fencing and because of this, admittedly, i fail to see the technical side of it all. It's one of those sports that i don't "get" and from a casual person's perspective, all it comes down to, is who has the better reach and timing. It's an uneducated response, i know, but i just don't find it interesting at all.

Table tennis - Not even a sport.

Tennis (outdoor) - I'm absolutely sure that it's not one tennis players ultimate goal to become an Olympic gold medalist in their sport. They already have their four big tournaments every year and (i assume) the big names would either treat this as a warm up for the US open or not even bother showing up at all.

Beach/Indoor Volleyball - Just pick one, we don't need both. Might as well have beach soccer as well.

Sailing - Most of you won't know this, but every year down here there's a sailing comp called the Sydney to Hobart and i've never understood the hype in it or the appeal in sailing in general. Another sport that no one's interested in and i bet none of you can name me the best sailor in the world.

There's a few more i wanted to add, but meh...that's enough.

Yep, just my opinion so anything i say will be 100% biased :).

I agree actually, apart from sailing, im no fan of it but i remember it can get quiet good when watching it :D

BMX is an Olympic sport? Please say you just made that up?

If things like beach volley ball is in the Olympics then why isn't darts and ten pin bowling?

Is handball not sporty enough to be in the olympics because you don't know what it is? handball is very tough and exhausting to play.

On msnbc they had a series of videos of forgotten Olympic games. Indian clubs, croquet and what, if I remember correctly, was solo synchronized swimming (yes, just one person in the water, thanks). All three disappeared mainly because lack of an audience. Interestingly, all three got into the games because they were popular in their host countries at the time, particularly the clubs (US) and croquet (France).

I havn't seen you around here in a while, you should post in the members lounge more. Indian clubs and croquet - i have no idea what these two sports are to be honest. How did they do solo synchronized swimming? Isn't the synchronization with your partner in the pool? Tug o' war use to a sport as well...I'm sure that was interesting.

Edit* So that's what croquet is (i just looked it up on wiki)...yeah, there's a croquet club near where i live. From where i sit, it's like golf for really old people

I can't see why sports are there at all. The Olympics are about athletics, why add in sports that already have their own premier tournaments?
Like the football/soccer; who gives a damn about it? The World Cup is the only one that really matters, and then each continents own 4 yearly competition comes in second. The Olympic gold is about as internationally significant is my daughters school sports day

I only see the olympics for athletics, and there are others such as rowing and swimming which are ok, and cycling.

Basically any competetive race.

The thing with soccer though is that it's U23, so it's suppose to showcase the younger talent in the game. But much like tennis, it isn't exactly a professional players dream to win an olympic gold medal in the sport and the timing of the tournament is just awful.

Yeah, the olympics for me has always been more about the individual sports rather than team sports, so sprinting, javelin throw, etc. But handball is damn fun to watch, specially the women, there are some tough strong females there :D

I'm gonna start training hard at Hopscotch, by the time the 2012 Olympics get here it's bound to be included

I won't be watching all events, but I will be looking forward to
Weightlifting, Judo, fencing, gymnastics, swimming, volleyball, and wrestling.

Beach volleyball is really exciting to watch.
