Weight-Loss The Good, the Banned and the Ugly.

Weight-Loss
Grown to Love:
vegetables and fruits- we always had home grown vegetables and fruits from our garden
chicken

Refuse to give up:
Homemade brownies, chocolate

Banned:
chips, Hot Dogs, Doughnuts, fast food

So did you make and have your taco's?
After writing about them I made some for myself on Thursday. I ate 2. Yum Yum Yum!

Matt - I just can't get used to brown rice, nor could I ever completely give up mayo. So good on you, buddy. How much did you used to drink?

Something that helped me to give up mayo was to find a healthier alternative, honey mustard. I love the taste of honey mustard on all the same meats I liked mayo on, and it is much better for me so those two factors helped a ton with dropping mayo.

Cant say I ever took note of exactly how much I was drinking but it was a daily occurance consisting of at least a few drinks every day for a while. It has been said that a drink a day can have benefits, but the pitfalls of alcohol outweight any minor benefits (can't say I am ready to give it up though =P )

Wow there's so much that other's have banned that I haven't. I try to follow 'everything in moderation'.

So...
Good:
Wholewheat pasta
Lower fat/cal versions of most of my regular evening dinners (mince and dumplings, chinese chicken etc)
Fruit (though I've always liked that)
Low fat spread (I don't love it but I'm used to it now)

Bad:
Biscuits! (but I only eat one or two now, not the whole packet)
KFC (ha yup I still eat fried chicken sometimes but it tends to be on a day where I eat very little else ... I try not to do this too often though)
Nando's (not actually that unhealthy and, again, I limit my intake for the rest of the day)
Mayo (I have the light version now though)
Wedges (home made, as opposed to fries - these could even go in the good list I guess)
White rice (I can't cook brown rice lol so I have no option but to stick with the white stuff)

Ugly:
Butter
Home baked cookies/brownies (I just over eat them, even if I make a healthy version)
Cake (how I miss thee)
Take away pizza, chinese, indian or anything that comes in a bag lol
Chocolate bars
... I kinda hadn't realised how much I avoid completely when I'm on the wagon...

It's a mixed bag really!

Mmm KFC...haha good to know someone else on this board can't give up fried chicken either :D

Matt, for some reason, I always though honey mustard was worse than mayo >_< what ignorance.

This is so sad. I love food so much I can't imagine giving up Mexican food or Pizza. I'd like to refer you to the article on the Twinkie Diet in the "Media" forum on this site. It really hammers home that you can eat what you want as long as you don't eat too much of it (the dude lost 27 pounds eating twinkies and ho-hos).

Then again... maybe you don't care what your food tastes like?

Course i care , haha , or i wouldnt be in this situation!! I havent had food ive enjoyed for months!! Maybe once a week i have something nice! Its horrible but nescesscary. I dont want to give in to my cravings it could be the begginning of the end!

It's been really tough but the key is moderation and the ability to say no! LOL. Here's my list..

Good:
Fruit
Chicken/Ham/Turkey
Whole Wheat Bread
Baby Carrots
Corn Squares Cereal
Starchy Veggies such as Sweet Potato and Squash
Tea
Mr.Sub!!

Will not Give Up:
Ice Cream!
Diet Soda
Sugar-Free Candy
Dark Chocolate
Pretzels

In Moderation:
Pizza - Only Homemade
Chinese
Pie/Cake
Cheese
Alcohol
Peanut Butter

Banned:
Anything Deep Fried
Any Fast Food
Chicken Nuggets
Fish n' Chips
Butter

... All I can think of at the moment! :)

I like things in moderation too and just make sure to make the rest of the days calories low so I can indulge a little. One thing I have switched is instead of buying lean groud beef I buy lean ground turkey or chicken so I can still make spaghetti and tacos and don't feel as guilty. I also like to make mini homemade pizza's but just sprinkle the cheese instead of covering it completely.
One thing I must ban is butter tarts! I was so addicted to them in the summer. This little store by my house sells them in packs of 6 and I would eat almost the whole pack some days. I asked at the store how many calories were in one because it's not listed and they told me over 500!! I remember a day I ate all 6 - that was a full pound of fat right there!!
I also have to ban peanut butter because I will think about it all night and grab a spoonful here and there if I have it in the house.
I can't ban alcohol but I do ban my favourite drink - white russians - they are so delicious and I could drink them all night!!

Banned for Life - Lima Beans. Not for dietary reasons, because BLECH.

Not Invited Home - these are things that are not banned, but that I have ceased to bring home because I know I am very likely to overeat them.
Triscuits
Goldfish crackers
Cake
Ice Cream
Pretzels

Grown to love:

Salads!! have 1 nearly every day as my dinner :D
Fruits (all sorts) never realy ate fruit before but i realy enjoy it now
Fat free Yogurts - again, never realy ate these before.
Special K Bars + Cereal - never even tried these things or any other varients of them before my diet.

All of the above is all i pretty much eat now 90% of the time. Ive completly given up everything crappy for me that i used to eat, inculding Diet Coke which was all i used to drink. But I CANNOT give up my indian food! i love it waaay to much and would go mental without it giving me something to look forward to on the weekend. I've had 1 every week so far and just thinking about it makes me hungry! :p Im not having a starter before my meal anymore but still have a keema naan bread with my curry every time *drools*

Just based on what has been working for me this last six weeks;

Good:
Lean, oven cooked meats such as Lamb, Beef, Pork
Chicken Breast, grilled or oven cooked with spices
Home made casseroles and curries
Carrots, Brocoli, Spinnach, Cauliflower, Peppers, Onion, Swede etc
Home made soups (Butternut Squash/Tomato/Potato and Leek etc)
Apples, Oranges, Satsumas, Bananas, Kiwi, Grapes
Tuna/Salmon
Fresh Fruit Juice
Steel Cut Oats
Water!

Ugly:
Carbonated drinks- this is down in banned too, I have stopped drinking sugary drinks like Coke Classic or Lucozade, though still allow myself Diet Coke at the minute.
Chips/Wedges- I still like to have oven cooked chips (fries) or potato wedges with my evening meals, they add some substance and help fill me up.
Breaded chicken- I love chicken, but it can be a bit boring on its own. Still find myself eating oven cooked breaded chicken fillets.
Burgers/Sausages- I still can't resist a burger here and there, justified so far by buying freshly made burgers from the butcher. Same goes for Sausages, love a nice grilled sausage sandwich on the weekend! Should probably put them aside to be honest...
Bread - I eat a lot less now than previously, but still have toasted brown bread most mornings, and the odd bread roll with meals.

Banned:
Takeout of any type, stuff I used to have multiple times per week included;
-14" Deep Pan Pizza with 4+ toppings
-Donner* kebab on Naan bread with lashings of mayonaise
-Donner* meat and fries with lashings of mayonaise
-Donner* calzone (this is the most shameful, it's not the fancy italian calzone but literally a 14" Pizza folded around Donner meat, ugh!)
-Chicken kebab on naan bread with lashings of mayonaise
-Meat and Potato Pie with Chips and Gravy

*Donner meat for anyone who isn't aware is a horrible, reconstituted mess of lamb and god knows what else that sits on a revolver in front of a heat source all night waiting for drunken idiots who are hungry for a terribly fattening end of the night feast to lay their eyes upon while it is sliced down and stuffed into a naan or pitta bread and topped with chilli/mayo/mint sauce etc. Awful.

Snacks, I used to munch through quite a few each day!
-Chocolate such as Mars or Snickers bars, usually the Duo/King size versions
-Crisps such as Salt & Vinegar or Cheese and Onion or Doritos, probably a couple of bags a day
-Cookies/Cakes- used to get through these day in day out at my desk, my colleagues still have a biscuit tin but I've not touched it for over a month.

-Full sugar Carbonated drinks- used to drink a hell of a lot of Orange Lucozade. I am still drinking Diet Coke but hoping to drop that soon too.

Matt, I finally got a bottle of honey mustard and I'm lovin it cuz I don't have to feel guilty about it :D

My life has been hell recently so I haven't had a chance to relax and cook those tacos. I'm gonna go head and shoot for sometime this week.

Thanks to everyone for posting. I love reading your lists :)

This is a cool topic.

Here's mine.

Good

Fat free all natural yogurt
Sardines (For the Omega-3's, also tasty once you get past the fishiness)
Canned Tuna/Salmon
Beans of any and all kinds (veg baked beans for lunch, Kidney beans in veg. chili or taco "meat", bean soup. Filling and tasty if cooked right.)
Sweet Potatos
Quinoa(still learning to like this one, it has an odd texture)
Nuts (instead of chips)
Venison
Those new thin sandwich buns, whole grain, only a hundred calories (for top and bottom)
Soft-boiled eggs (used to hate them, now they're one of my favorite foods, as long as they're not fried)

Can't Live Without:

Cheese. Cheese, cheese, god damned beautiful cheese.
Mayonaisse (though I'm trying to go with brown mustard instead, sometimes I succeed.)
Ketchup
Sour cream (I could live off cheese and sour cream if I had to)
Full fat salad dressings
Diet Soda (Don't really consider this bad, just unnecessary)
Chips, both tortilla and potato.

Only in Moderation

Regular potatoes
Red meat
Fruit juices
Alcohol

Banned

All fast food.
Sugary drinks.
Any dessert not made completely from scratch (I have almost no sweet tooth, so I consider myself lucky there. Baker's chocolate melted with peanut butter and splenda will do it for me, once a month or so.)
Salty snacks beside chips or nuts

This stuff is only banned because the calorie investment doesn't match the reward. It took me a long time to learn that you can make a homemade burger that is as good as, or better than, a Whopper with like a third of the calories. Ditto for roasted potato wedges. Fast food is also banned because I don't like the idea of a corporation deciding what I put in my body based on their bottom line, with additives and extra fat pumped in to trick me into thinking it tastes good.

I try to eat vegetarian at least twice a week, just to mix it up and force myself to come up with new ways to enjoy my food. I really love cooking, and am quite good at it, at least to my satisfaction, so there's no problem there. This also cuts down on my grocery bill, using a 60 cent can of kidney beans instead of a pound of ground beef in my chili, and makes me appreciate eating meat more when I do make it.

So, I made some chile last night. I got it a little on the hot side. I love spicy food and sometimes I end up making things a little too hot. It sure came out good but boy was it hot! I grind up all my own meat and make my own sausage so I can control the amount of fat that goes into it.

The Good

Lean deli turkey and low-sodium deli ham (ask for it)

Low-fat Sargento string cheese

Great Grains cereal

Grilled fish (I'm partial to flounder and mahi mahi)

Whole-wheat pasta shells

2% American cheese slices

Fat-free cream cheese

SunChips

Lipton's diet green tea

The banned (things I keep in extreme moderation, but don't beat myself up over eating

regular rye bread (Frankly, whole-wheat bread tastes like garbage to me! Considering that my sandwiches consist of lean turkey, low-sodium ham and fat-free cream cheese, I can live with this.)

cheese (I can barely stand a sandwich without cheese!)

mayo (though I use Kraft's light mayo made w/ olive oil)

egg yolks (I use half whites, half whole eggs)

The ugly (only permissible for a once-a-week splurge meal

Arby's beef-n-cheddar and curly fries
regular sodas (I used to pound 3+ RC Colas per day)
philly cheese steaks
regular tortellini

nice post!
the good: turkey sandwiches, pretzels, apples, bananas, peas, fresh green beans, cottage cheese, skim milk. wraps. fresh sandwiches. salads. yogurt. soup. peas and corn.
protein bars. Hummus too.

moderation:
carb side dishes, like mashed potatoes, ricearoni, stuffing, etc. zero calorie soda, regular soda.
GIVE UP PIZZA? never! it can be done, in moderation! Gyros.
FYI.... pizza LEAN POCKETS!!! are tasty as hell and really taste good, ie.. like real pizza, without a ton of calories.
baked chips.
Ice cream... low fat, whenever possible.
fruit pie.. my favorite desert. (very rarely)

banned:
pizza with extra cheese. (this alone made me gain like 4 pounds on New Year's eve)
bread and butter - esp. at restaurants
salami, pepperoni, sausages
milk shakes.
bacon
non fruit pies or heavy cake.
alfredo sauce
onion rings
sundaes
almost all packaged cookies. (lowfat cookies for snacks, rarely), homemade cookies are a rare treat on the holidays, I never have them at home.
