I thought it would be fun to list some of the foods we've learned to like, the foods that we are cutting back on and the foods that are banned to us right now, and no I'm not necessarily talking about macro-nutrients. Feel free to skip any category (s)

Good:
I've grown to like (or tolerate):

Cottage cheese
Skim milk
Flatbread
Spinach
Formerly "yucky" nuts
Carrots
Soups
Fish (only some varieties--never catfish or tilapia)
Wheat bread
Whole grain crackers
Pretzels
Vegetable Chips
Grapefruit

Foods That I Refuse To Give Up :
OK, yeah I know a lot of these are "bad" but the important point is that I've learned how deal with them, and more importantly incorporate them into my daily calories. I probably would go crazy without them. I love chicken so yeah hahaha

Burgers - Uggh. Instead of a giant quarter pounder or even double QP, I'll eat a modest one from the value menu once or twice a week.

Popeyes Chicken - I'll only limit myself to two small pieces MAYBE once or twice a week. No sides or biscuits. I've been known to eat 3-4 large pieces + fries in one sitting :(

Chick-Fil-A Chicken Sandwiches - OMG they are so freakin good. Again though now, I throw away half the bun, add mustard instead of mayo, and no cheese or fries. I even eat the grilled one now and then.

Wingstop - Instead of tearing up 20 wings and fries, I'll eat 10 with a small side of potato salad....very sparingly do I come here nowadays though.

Spaghetti / Fettucini Alfredo - I used to be able to go through a whole pot by myself through the course of the day. One plate and I'm good now. Nix on the garlic bread.

Chicken McNuggets -- Downgraded from 20 pieces to 6.

Hot Links -- So damn tasty. These are about 290 cals. I just eat one alone now instead of putting them on a bun with cheese, chili, relish, and onions.

BANNED (GTFO):
There's just SOMETHING about these foods that I know are extremely dangerous for me to even try to eat moderately. Auf wiedersehen....

Pizza -- Die. I hate you. Perma-banned.
Home made fried spring rolls -- Can't believe I forgot this egregious offender. My cousins and I would get together and make a batch of fifty or so with a hot peanut sauce dip and spicy green papaya salad. I would end up eating like 7-8 of them and bringing at least five home.
Chinese food
Cheez-its
Barbecue ribs
Country Fried Steak from Chilis-- Miss you. I'll see you again one day.
Chicken Crispers from Chilis -- Ditto
Tacos (home made) -- I used to eat like 5-8 tacos with fried corn tortillas, tons of cheese and sour cream. I can't trust myself with these now.
Potato Chips
Big Mama's Chicken and Waffles -- total debauchery o_O Luckily its in a really seed part of Dallas.
Fries / Tater Tots
Anything from Long John Silver's
Foot Long Coneys from Sonic
Philly Cheesesteaks
Anything sweet. OK I lie the only "sweet" thing I was addicted to was Mocha/Caramel Frapps.

Everything here is pretty much what my diet consisted of. Keep in mind everything on the BANNED list constituted like 80% of what I normally ate. Pretty ashamed of myself. But hell, its getting better folks ;)

Good idea!

I'm not going to list foods that are banned for me because reading your list made me hungry!! LOL

But foods I've really grown to love and make me feel good for eating are:
Wheat bread (love you)
Steam in a bag veggies.... so easy and good for you
Sweet potatoes... in moderation, baked no butter
Fruits!!! Rasberries (love you)
Grilled chicken...... I get REALLY sick of grilled chicken very fast so I'm having more fun with different healthy recipes... like asparagus stuffed chicken, homemade sweet and sour, seseme seed chicken, spick chicken etc
Green tea.....healthier than my usual 20 sugar and creamer coffee :)

Hi, I don't have anything banned I just work them into my diet.
I make a lot of my own stuff like sausage, pizza and a lot of very good healthy Mexican foods. I even came up with pumpkin custard thats pretty good and good for you. I like cooking and enjoy coming up with new things. You can even have Chinese food if you know how to make it.
So my list is nothing is banned just not eaten as often. I love ice cream and will often make my own frozen yogurt.
I can understand banning things if you don't cook.

Foods I've grown to love:
pickles
baby carrots
onion
tomato
brown rice
water
peanuts

Very rare:
liquor
pizza (almost never have it anymore)
ice cream

Banned:
soda
anything Little Debbie
McDonalds
Burgerking
mayo

All I can think of at the moment

Jenn - You should come back and post your banned foods when you're full LOL. Nah j/k im not trying to sabotage you. I get really sick of grilled chicken too that's why I stray once in awhile.

Lyn - That's awesome that you can make everything you like to eat in a healthy fashion. What are some healthy Mexican foods you make. (Curious because I love it too)

Matt - I just can't get used to brown rice, nor could I ever completely give up mayo. So good on you, buddy. How much did you used to drink?

Tony, The Mexican foods I make are tacos, Burritos, enchiladas and fajitas. I use either chicken, beef or pork. I buy very lean cuts of meet then remove any visible fats and cook meats with seasoning until the meat is very tender and can be pulled apart with a fork. If you would like some recipes let me know on this thread and I'll tell you how to make them tomorrow. I'm too tired to do much typing tonight.
Lynn

why is the steak banned?

Why haven't you updated your journal? ;) haha j/k you seem to be doing fine.
Anyway, whenever I eat steak I -- eat way too much of it, I'm tempted to pour gravy, caramelized onions, mushrooms, and green peppers on it and even worse I have the impulse to always eat it with a loaded baked potato. Yeah I think I can work around it, but I'd rather just not tempt fate right now.

Lyn, that would be excellent. I'm down for some healthy Mexican recipes. I don't like how all recipes can only be submitted by the owners of the site.

Nothing wrong with steak dude. Get a proper steak spice with a lean cut, sear it to med or med/rare and add not more than a tsp of sauce for flavor. voila, healthy red meat!

But you're right, slather it with everything else you mentioned and thats trouble.

I wouldn't say I've "learned to love" any foods... I think when I eat it I either like it or not. I would, however, say that I've fallen out of love with a few foods, like white meat chicken or turkey and extra-lean beef. It's always tasteless! I always go dark meat legs and thighs, or fatty cuts of beef... I just have to make sure to keep the portion size down. :p

And I don't ban anything, it would only make me crave it. There's definitely things I try to avoid on most days, like tortilla chips, but I'd never delete them from my rep.

Well! In terms of things i havent given up... i have given up everything i enjoy mostly and then maybe oncea week i give in to a craving:(

Things i will pretty much never ever eat again
:Mexican food - my fave:(
Pizza , Cheese , Pasta, Sandwiches , Cakes, Ice cream, Potato Products lol. everything nice. Even if i did want to eat them.. the guilt i felt after wouldn't be worth the pleasure of eating them

Things i now live off, pretty much entirely, which i would never have chosen before:

Green Tea
Scrambled Egg
Stirfry veg without meat and just with soy
Weight Watchers yoghurts - 50 cals
Roast chicken
Dry Bran Flakes
Skim milk - if milk is required

My only pleasure really is in alcohol which i still allow myself in quite large quantities on occasion!! But only once a week , whereas before the diet i would have drank twice a week and got through around 3000 calories in one session!

Hi Tony,
Heres one way to make healthy tacos. You can use chicken, lean beef, or lean pork.
To make shredded meat.
Trim all visible fat from meat. Place in pot with chopped onion, bell peppers, jalapeño peppers (if you like it spicy) green chilies, garlic, paprika, salt, black pepper, cumin and crushed red peppers. Cover with water and boil meat on med heat 2-3 hrs. ( boneless chicken only takes abut 1 hr.) Now and then you might have to add a little more water. It's done when you can easily pull the meat apart with a fork. Remove the meat from the pot and pull the meat apart with 2 forks.
You can use this meat to make Tacos, Burritos or enchiladas.
Tortillas use the carb balance, low fat or any of the high fiber ones that you like. Or use precooked formed corn ones these have lower calories and fat than cooking corn ones in oil.
For soft tacos just heat in the microwave a few seconds and fill with meat, tomatoes, lettuce, 2% cheddar or jack cheese a little light sour cream if you like it. And don't forget the salsa.
Weight your cheese and meat before putting it in so you will know how much your using.
I like to mix chopped tomatoes, cilantro, onions ans jalapeños together and put that on.
If you make up a large pot pf meat then you can freeze the rest in meal size amounts then you'll have the prepared meat all ready for next time.

This is so sad. I love food so much I can't imagine giving up Mexican food or Pizza. I'd like to refer you to the article on the Twinkie Diet in the "Media" forum on this site. It really hammers home that you can eat what you want as long as you don't eat too much of it (the dude lost 27 pounds eating twinkies and ho-hos).

Then again... maybe you don't care what your food tastes like?

Heres one way to make healthy tacos...

If I could make a suggestion? Instead of water, use chicken broth; it'll jack up your flavor tenfold.

Also, I personally wouldn't trim ALL of the fat, but skim it off the broth once the meat has finished cooking. It'll add more flavor and probably won't cost too many calories.

Hi Toddless,
The great thing about cooking is each cook can change it to suite themselfs. If you can afford the extra calories a little fat does make it taste better.

Wow didn't expect to get a big response, so thanks to EVERYONE for posting. :)

First thoughts: 3000 (!) calories in one drinking session. Wow haha. Crazy night, eh Roll?

Guys, I will go ahead and unban steak with your recommendations but if I gain 5 lbs, I will hunt you down. ;) LOL nah if I go overboard that's all on me.

Jesais you are totally right -- who the HELL can eat just one potato chip or french fry?

Lyn, thank you so much for that awesome recipe, I will try to do it this weekend. I love Todd's idea of using chicken broth too though. I will try my hardest not to eat 8.
