Sparrows Experiment

While I have never ridden in 100+ F temps, when I ride in Florida in the upper 90's, heat never seems to get to me. The wind blowing on me and through my helmet always seems to keep me reasonably comfortable. Now, cold OTOH...

Oh I'm dead in the heat. Its going to be my biggest contender hands down at this race. Its the thing I worry about the most since I've had 2 other times in my lifetime in race conditions with severe dehydration (talking emergency room IV, no sight, erratic heart rate, vomitting bile) I think I could manage if the temp would like to stay in the mid 60's for the entire race but once it hits above 80 it gets from bad to worse. I'm just a "hot box" anyway. I'm hot when everyone else is cold-even in winter and I sweat more than the average bear. Menopause is going to be a real joy for me :(

ahem...... that bastahd!

:cool:who can blame him ;)

oh, and thanks for the great workout routine! "it's a workout I found that is making me look and feel great..." you for got to say "nanner nanner nanner"

um do you WANT that tri routine? It would probably be too "girly" for you and then I'd get blamed for you losing even more "meat" haha :D

I keep forgetting to do this for my own FYI. No workout today.

Half Training Week 7 Totals

Swim
5700

Bike
120 miles

run
17miles

Full body weights plus core** 1x

** need core more often

run 45 min 9min pace
swim 1500 boring yards

Heart wasn't in it today. I had good intentions of running and hour, swimming an hour but I just got bored and unmotivated after about 40 min of running. I didn't do those swim laps continuous. I did a little set here, a little set there. boring.

I ran into Mr Motivation today. Maybe mentioned him a time or two. He is one of our spin instructors who unfortunatly doesn't host very many classes but he is awesome. He is a motivational speaker as his profession and brings it into cycle.

Anyway, when he sees me he likes to tease me about my "hours" of cardio and intense gym personality. Until today he didn't know I was a triathlete. Today he caught me at the beginning of my workout and was concerned about my foot since he last saw me limping. I told him I was good as new after 4 days despite the dr's grim report. He told me it was because I was super woman and super healthy.

He asked me why I do what I do and what keeps me going. I told him about the half ironman and that it was my last race for a while. I then told him I was losing motivation, doubting myself, and worried about finishing it. He was blown away. He told me I'm the most in shape person he knew and had heart for it like he'd never seen. He told me that anyone who comes in day after day for hours at a time self motivated, can certainly finish a half iron and have confidence in her abilities. He said unless I race like I train in the gym I won't DNF. He said "you are INTENSE, you do EVERYTHING with intensity and gusto, you have primed your body to respond to speed AND endurance, but you'll need to learn more than that for that event, you'll need to learn to step it back a notch even if you want to RACE, you'll have to slow down to win-how well do you think you can do that?"

I told him I'd had this same conversation with a friend last night and that he was my further confirmation ;)

He left me with a smile and "Godspeed" and that made me happy

Wasn't sure how to get the workout in today since I worked all morning, and work again at night. Our air quality is HORRIBLE today because of all the fires so not many people came to masters. That meant I got in!

300 warm up
4x75 swim/drill/swim by 25's
200 fly kick on back
9x200 free/backstroke combo with 10 sec rest between each
100 cool
total: 2700

Full body tri circuit weights 2x12 on everything

The swim wore me. I pushed it pretty hard and felt on that anaerobic threshold the whole time. I didn't mean to kill it. I haven't been swimming as much so it was hard to pace. It was still a great workout.

Weights were great too only I'm a weakling. Part of the issue is I lift for endurance now, not for strength. When all of this is over I'll be glad to just be part of the weight room fixtures again with my NROL.

Weird TMI thing: I had a protein shake this morning with NO ice and only 8oz of water. SO total of 8oz liquid. I didn't drink anything during my coaching early (7-9am) or anything during my workout (930-1030) (bad Katie, I know) or during weights (1045-11) but I had to pee 5 times within the hour after swimming and I'm not talking a little bit either. Whats that about?? I had the same issue yesterday running! I felt like I needed to go swing by the store and get some depends! hahaha

Wow we seem to be doing something similar for a change... lifting for endurance that is... My trainer gave me a new program to help me develop my endurance some.

When was the last time you had your blood work done?

My fasting glucose was 95 which was at the high end of the range, but still in range.

90 min bike

Kept its smooth and steady, easily maintained but still with an element of challenge. I probably should have run instead...but .....yeah...

Yeah, 95 glucose is a pinch high, but might have been what you ate recently. Check it when you have it tested again to see if it stayed there or dropped.

When I was in the hospital, mine hit 150. The ICU nurses and doctors weren't concerned but the final nurse was all frazzled about it and gave me all kinds of literature on type II diabetes. I checked my workup pre-surgery and it was 85. If I lay off the sweets a little, it will drop below 80. 70 is my goal.

On this subject, did you ever get your hdl and ldl cholesterol results?

yeah well the thing with the glucose levels is that I eat fairly low carb for the kind of activity I do. On any "normal" training day I probably eat (no flaming!) less than 100 carbs a day (I think thats a generous number actually). I have eaten this way for over 10 years when I realized I was very sensitive to carbs and started gaining unexplained weight with virtually the same diet. When I eat a high carb meal or even "higher carb" than usual things are backwards for me. I get VERY lethargic and crabby for a few DAYS. My body doesn't feel "well" and I feel just off. I am my most energetic when I'm eating a higher protein, lower carb lifestyle.

When I do high volume training days I obviously supplement but not to the extent most athletes might. If I get too much in my system I become sluggish and my stomach will really hurt. The only time I can really get away with eating high carb and it doesn't really affect me is right after a long volume workout or race. I have one meal afterwards tha I can virtually eat as much pasta or whatever as I want and I won't get the same side effects. Thank goodness I can do this because this one meal is needed for post workout recovery.

This is the second time I got my blood glucose taken. The first was a month before it and the levels then were 99 fasting. The day before I took the last fasting test I had NO sugar and carbs only in the way of veggies. I did that on purpose. Its not high enough to be "flagged" but its high enough to wonder about.

I'm not sure what it is, but I know I have some sensitivity to carbohydrate. Its why they tested me for Celiac Disease. So far nobody has labeled it and all tests show normal. When I was pregnant and had those glucose challenge tests Iwas always boarderline for those too and usually had to do the "extra" test to be sure everything was normal. Nobody but this board and my husband knows that I eat low carb and train the way I do. If they did they'd be concerned. My husband used to get upset at me about it until he realized I definitely function better this way and typically don't run out of energy. I really don't know how my muscles work the way they do, but it does work for me and everytime I try to change it to be "normal" I regret it and it sets me back.

I am sure you already know this but 75 up to and including 99 are normal. 100 - 125 are considered pre-diabetic. You are in the normal range, so that is good, but I am sure your doctor is watching this.

With your diet, I would have been surprised that it was as high as it is unless you have some predisposition or you are a closet chocolate junkie.;)

no but I am a closet chocolate ICE CREAM junkie on occassion...just not during those blood tests :)
