Sparrows Experiment

Sparrow, you are a typical Type A personality that needs goals - I am the same and there is nothing wrong with that, I don't think.

I think it is fine to pick goals that are just beyond your current grasp but not an impossible reach. For you, a half-ironman would fit that bill.

Haven't you done a marathon before? Also, have you considered a time trial bike race? If you can break 1:10 in 40K (24.8miles - 21mph avg.), I think you would have a shot at placing and I think that is within your grasp.

no I've only done half marathons before. My goal this summer was to break 1:45 half marathon time and I did at 1:44. My longest run in my life has been 17 miles and it was only because FF dared me to. :)

I've never thought of a time trial. Where do you find more info on them?

Here is a series of time trials in Exeter, CA:

Thanks, I'll check those out as a possibility. Never thought of doing a bike race. thats kinda nifty. It'll depend on how much longer I have this sweet ride my friend has graciously let me use for so long. I haven't even been on my bike since the half ironman. I took the stickers off it yesterday

I took today off. I slept in and loved every second of that. My joints are so achy and I have a feeling its artificial sweetener (namely splenda) so I'm going back to being a "purist" like I was more when I was training to see if that helps. Back to the glucosamine, back to the multi, back to more water and less coffee/tea etc. I have to face facts, I'm just getting OLD ;)

Tomorrow is my long run. Supposed to do 10. I'm a bit worried about it because the knees have been so painful. I'll assess tomorrow, but I'm sure I'll be stupid and headstrong about it, regardless of how I'm feeling ;)

10 miler at 6am.

I hooked on the water belt (no comment FF!) with 16 total oz. of fluid and a gu in case, garmin on the wrist and knee band on the patellar tendon to keep it tame, popped 2 tylenol and I was good to go. I'm still horrible at drinking water. I had more than half my water left at the end.

We did more chatting so it went faster. Its getting easier to run and talk-Its good hypoxic-type training too :) I thought we were going very slow-moderate pace, and I was actually thinking "I'm glad she's being easy on the pace today" until she said "you're going faster today". The knees behaved and I actually felt better running than I have for a while. I put myself on auto pilot and just enjoyed the morning. Stats were 10.1 mi run at 8:24 pace, very comfortable, and included 2 one minute walking breaks for water and streets.

Not too shabby. Looking forward to the half in 2 weeks

4 mile jog to loosen the legs from yesterday. I actually feel fantastic after yesterdays 10 miler. I brought my daughter along-she is da bomb-love that kid. Ended up being a cruisin' 9 min mile pace and I actually didn't even sweat! A first for sure.

2600 yd swim

Felt nice after a weekend of running.

Made my masters group do 31x100 today for my birthday age. they were pretty put off ;)

Thanks everyone. It was a great day.

Today:
spin class-hills and I finally remembered my HR monitor. Kept it around 150 most of class. Max was 171. Comfortable pace had me around 125-130.
NROL weights-new phase-yahoo!

Ah spin class, finally something I can relate to lol. 125-130 rpm was your cadence? Sounds like you were going pretty fast on those hills (I understood that hills should have a cadence between 60-80).

haha no.

Cadence was 90 for flat and hills. I try to lock into a pace and stay with it no matter the resistance so even on heavy hills I'm really pushing the legs hard. I tend to really crank the resistance up in spin and I'm uncomforable 95% of the time, even if the instructor gives us a break. It helps me translate hard work to my road bike for a longer duration that way. I just get used to being flooded with lactic acid.

I also have my eyes closed and I'm tucked in aero almost the entire class visualizing wherever my next race is (lately its just been back on that infamous half ironman course). Thats what makes it come alive for me. I also visualize "others" out there-that I'm tucking behind to draft and then passing-of course :) Spin is so fun.

The 125-30 was my heartrate on that 5% of the class I went easy :D

Ah ok - gotcha. Actually the way you're riding is closer to the ride I had for the spinning orientation course I took - the master instructor would tell us a heart rate to get to, and what to do to achieve it (up resistance, or cadence, or both). She also did cadence checks periodically to make sure we were appropriately paced to. Even though my legs didn't like it, I really enjoyed the ride and told her so afterwards.

Yes this particular instructor is big on cadence checks and heart rate. She also mimics rides and terrain and I love that. Thats why its so easy to visualize and really BE there in her class. Her style has really helped in my races. I know my cadence and the way I should be feeling as to neither over or underestimate my abilities.

I'm adding to my day a 3 mile run I did with my husband tonight. First time I've run with him in who knows how long. We certainly have different styles. yipes. It was hard to run with him. Some people energize you (my running partner I do long runs with) and others sort of rob your energy (him tonight!). So I'm not sure it'll be a regular thing we do. haha
