Sources for Protein

need help finding protein!

so how much protein is really necessary in your diet? ive been told that if you are weight training, which i currently am, that u need like 1-1.5 grams per pound you weigh.. well i weigh 145 sooo haha that honestly seems ridiculous to me? am i misinformed?

anyway heres my problem, ive been a vegeatarin since i was a little girl and im definatly not getting enough protein. the protein shakes ive tried either taste sooo bad or end up having too much fat and calories to be benifical

sooo any suggestions of foods or a decent brand of protein shake? thanks. :)

i'm not sure about how much you are supposed to have (1-1.5 per pound sure sounds like a LOT to me...). but i absolutely love egg whites (50 calories in 3 whites and 10 grams of protein...i'm assuming you eat eggs and aren't vegan). peanut butter is also good, as well as tofu and beans. you probably know all this, but hope it helps!

Whey protein shake - there isnt much you can do to get around it :/

I do weights as well, the shake is a nessary evil .

Just plug your nose, swollow it back and find something to get rid of the taste immediatly afterwards :)

isagenix is an organic supplement and cleansing product that works
it is recommanded by Chicken Soup for the Healthy Soul

Please remind me - protein sources

I'm having some issues with protein. I don't eat beef or pork, the only meat I eat is chicken, occassionally I'll eat fish. I do eat cottage cheese, and organic peanut butter (although after looking at the fat content-I'm reconsidering that one), but what else am I missing? I know beans are supposesed to be a good source, but I really don't know what to do with them in terms of recipes, and I'm not a fan of the side effects of beans (tmi I know :p ).

Any suggestions, or is there a thread in here I might have missed on the topic?

Hello I dont know about beans I dont like them but you cant go wrong with chicken and Turkey and many ways to prepare them!
Also I do south beach ceral bars and they have some good flavors and 19g of protien and if you can tolerate some of slimfasts bars they have some bars that have 30+ grams and also protien shakes out there.
Well good luck to ya and check recipie sections for some gr8 chicken recipies and there is probally bean recipies to. Tammy:)

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure eggs are good for protein. I also heard that tofu is supposed to be good if you can stand the taste of it.

Chicken and fish are great sources of protein to eat. Organic peanut butter is a decent choice - yes there is fat, but its mostly good fat. The commercial peanut butter has other oils added to it to make it creamy and give it its texture, but the natural/organic peanut butter is made up solely of peanuts. Just don't each too much of it. Nuts in general are a good source of protein, but choose raw nuts, such as almonds (great snack choice). Nuts like cashews have to be roasted before you can eat them, and this introduces oils into the process, and makes them a not-so-good choice. I'd stick with the all natural peanut butter, plain raw almonds, and almond butter.

Eggs are a great source of protein. If you want to limit the fat, eat just the egg whites, or mix some egg whites and some whole eggs. The yolk is where all the fat and cholesterol is, the whites are pretty much pure protein.

Beans are a good source of protein and a great source of fiber (which is a really good thing). If you use canned beans, rinse them really really well. The liquid in the can is the source of much of the unwanted, er...side effects.

Canned tuna (obviously a fish) is a quick and easy way to get protein. Lots of good stuff in fish.

I onced interviewed a body builder who said to eat 1g for each 1 pound of body weight. I get protein in the forms of low-fat string cheese, cottage cheese ( c.c. is a complete protein, which means it contains all the amino acids necessary to build new muscle), peanut butter, morning star veggies burgers (not a vegetarian, but they are lower in fat and high in protein), soy nuts, salmon, lean deli meats, whey protein and almonds.

116 grams. for a girl it is less probably 0.8 or a little less. 1-1.5 is for men

112 grams(4 ounces) of chicken has 22 grams proteing only count the 22 not the 112

The strawberry shakes i drink taste like straberry shortcake. . there half as cheap as others

I use a vanilla flavoured whey protein and make protein shakes or put it in my yogurt, cottage cheese or soy milk, as my diet demands.

protein

personaly speaking i have been going to my local health food store and they can show you different things to eat and drink concerning protein and calories. a lot of your protein mix say's to mix it with water, but that is just gross instead i use skim or fat free milk and the one with whey it them is really good. they also carry organic food and it is not to bad. so go check them out and you might be suprise what you find. good luck

Protein without meat or fish?

Does anyone know a good source of protein, without eating meat or fish? I don't really like any fish, and chicken or bacon is pretty much all the meat I like, but as I'm trying to save money for my Gap Year, I don't tend to buy meat, as it's more expensive! I have milk on my cereal in the morning, and occasionally have cheese, but I try to avoid dairy products otherwise, because of the fat content....but is there anything else that I can get protein from which isn't fattening? My diet is pretty much based around salads, as I don't have much time to properly cook anything (I often work double shifts), so does anyone know of anything that I could incorporate into that which would give me some protein?

beans are plenty cheap and have lots of protein as well as fiber and other good stuff for you.. and depending onthe bean they can be cooked in a variety of ways.. lentils are also high in protein.

soy products are also packed with protein - tofu, soy beans, etc
Eggs
nuts
i beleive you can also get protein from whole grains

That's amazing, thank you...I forgot about eggs!! And whole grain is quite interesting...I'd never really heard much about that. I'll have to try them out...I'll go and look for soy beans too, they sound like they could be good!

edaname you can try out in japanese restaurants - it's the soy bean served in the shell - usually just boiled or steamed and given to you with a bit of salt and maybe sesame oil.. it's fun eating.

health food stores usually sell fresh soybeans (the edaname - in the shell or out of it) and often times you can get them dried.

i'm not sure that all whole grains have protein - or are good sources -- but some of them definitely are...

Wow, I just looked up edaname and soy beans, and it turns out that they have 35% protein, which is the highest of any plants! That's amazing! I think I'll definitely be trying them...
I've looked up on the Whole Grains Council too, and it says that whole grains have more protein than others, though it's not as much as that you can get in beans and things...but they're still something!
