Weight-Loss Sodium

Weight-Loss
the US RDA is 2300 mg -the American heart associations DASH diet (dietary approach to stoop hypertension) is 1500mg...

under 2000 is fine...

under 1000 would be tough to do... everything has some bit of sodium... but throwing out the salt cellars and never adding additional salt won't kill you...

Yah - Looking at my diet thus far, its been difficult getting below 1,800mg/day of sodium - seems to be sodium in darn near everything...

Too Much Sodium in Diet :(

Heya,

I have a problem - I THINK my diet consists of to much sodium :(

I know sodium can increase blood pressure and this is mainly due to water retention in the body (I have LOW blood pressure so that part is good... but retaining water is...)

One I do for dinner is make sandwiches with either chicken breast or turkey slices and then I sprinkle it with lots of veggies but even more PICKLES! Then I add the Italian Dressing (5 calories, 0 fat, dun remember the sugar content but it has like 12% salt per 15 ml). These pickles range from 5-13% per something.... I LOVE pickles - always have and I eat them on a regular or even daily basis and they are sooo low on calories.... I'm not sure if I go over that "100%" BUT remember my calorie diet is not the typical 2000 but 1400 AND since I just sprinkle the stuff without actually measuring how much I put, so I have no idea. Also, pickles are the only thing I know of that actually curb my hunger since I'm hungry all the time even with "fibrious" cereal and fruits/veggies throughout the day... must be psychological

Is there anyway around the "water retention" or something I can do to combat that? Do I really need to cut these out of my diet?

Would appreciate all the advice I can get ^^

Nope... you do NOT need to really cut them out. I don't know your stats and what your caloric intake should be right now, but lets say you did the math correctly, than I will say if you drink a lot of water (about a gallon or so for women and two for men) than water weight isn't an issue. If you suffer from hypertension and it isn't food related (high BP) than I would rethink what you are saying, but as of right now, the way I've researched it is simple...

Sodium + High Water intake = good stuff. Keeps all the parts working and a low caloric diet will pretty much even itself out anyways.

P.S. I love me some good pickles too...

My step mother bought some new bread today which has 535mg of sodium per 100g. Each slice is 75g so if I have two sandwiches (thus four slices) that is 1,605mg.

What the hell? Is this common for breads?

Fairly common sad to say - especially if it's a low fat or some sort type of bread - manufacturers will add in sodium or sweeteners to make up for the things they've removed...

The US RDA of sodium is to keep it under 2300mg a day... which if you eat any kind of processed food, or any food that isn't entirely made in your kitchen - can be a little tough to accomplish...
