Smaller Meals Don't Help Weight Loss

Ohhhh, totally different debate I think.

And obesity is at an all time high... so I might not follow your argument that not as many are suffering from it now.

That wasn't quite the comment.

I think I threw an "as" in there, that I'm hoping changed the context and that I'm not imagining it. It was in reference to what steve and I were talking about a few posts up.

It seems people are torn on whether many meals during the day is beneficial or not...Regardless of the metabolism speeding up issue, it would seem to me that the body would have an easier time digesting several meals over the course of a day rather then one or 2 large meals at a time. no?

I mean that obesity would still be an issue for some people. Just not as many as are suffering from it now.

Haha, I'm dense today. Is this the conversation so far, simplified?

You: I think people should listen to their bodies and eat when they're hungry rather than have a structured plan.

Me: It doesn't have to be overly strict, just a guideline that's adhered to as often as possible. But going by listening to your body doesn't seem to work for the people I've worked with. Plus, if it did work, we wouldn't be faced with the obesity epidemic we have today.

You: Obesity wouldn't be as bad a problem if they listened to their bodies.
I don't get it? I'm suggesting that people listening to their bodies is what got us (us as a society) in the predicament we're in.

From that last line in our simplified recap it would seem as if you're directly refuting this idea. Can you elaborate. And I'm not picking on you... I promise. I'm genuinely interested in what you have to say.

To elaborate on the idea that listening to our bodies is what got us in the predicament we find ourselves in today, let me add this.

Society and culture has changed big time. Our mind and body wants us to eat. It's how we survived as a species this long. Our surroundings however, have changed big time. Much less activity is required now than then. So much less that many people can get by with barely moving on a daily basis. Plus our food source has changed. Not only has it increased enormously... bu the quality and caloric density of foods had changed for the worst.

Now you can add a layer to this by saying we should listen to our bodies while controlling calories. But what I'm saying is that doesn't go hand in hand given our current situation.

3 vs. 6 meals... nah.

Read my post a few up. The food just sits in the GI tract and digestion/absorption takes a bit longer with larger meals compared to smaller, more frequent.

But the net impact is probably close to the same.

I think the recap confused me so perhaps what I say now won't make as much sense. But I think that our problem comes from not listening to our body. I think if we listened to our body we'd know what it really needed, that it was craving essential vitamins and nutrients, like iron, calcium, something to make it run properly. We'd be able to tell when our stomach has had enough put it ..etc etc.

But I suppose that only (*the word sex comes to mind here for some reason*) could apply to someone who hadn't been polluted with other stuff for their body to crave, like caffeine. In which case I would be forced to agree with you.

Do you kind of get what I'm saying? Perhaps it's just "idealistic" and it has no real grounds to stand on. But it's what I think anyways.

Ditto. My point was it wasn't clear to me either, with her last statement and then you start getting into confusing conversations with pronouns (like IT) when things aren't clearly defined.

Personally my body doesn't tell me when I'm short on calcium or Vitamin K. Not unless I have a true deficiency.

I get what you're saying... and I would label it idealistic to say the least.

Many people hate being fat. Everyone hates pain. So if it were as simple as listening to their bodies, once they realized said hate, they'd start listening. I think the problem/solution is much more complex than this.

Listening to your body is only good if you speak its language. Most don't from what I've seen.

lol @ Maleficent, drinking all day, tsk tsk

I always thought eating smaller meals more frequently was better, seems to help with concentration. :/

Well, I'm certainly am no expert, and don't think I will ever gain expert status. But it's exciting to try and learn anyways.

I am interested in learning how my body speaks to me... sadly, with losing 115 lbs and beginning a bulk this past week, I still know NOTHING :(

Hey... you are certainly entitled to your opinion! Don't get me wrong... I'm not telling you How It Is. I'm simply stating my opinions, is all.

I can see how you get frustrated on this forum easily... must suck to try to have open conversations sometimes.

No, no. I know.

When you're throwing out absolute facts you're much more scary.:hurray: (I'm just joking about the last part btw. I understand where you're coming from and appreciate your outlook a lot.)
