Smaller Meals Don't Help Weight Loss

I agree with.

I think the more important on a diet plan is: - what nutrition values in your meals? What you eat like a snack? All That food are quite interest to your healthy?

I don't believe on a diet plan, based on "snacks" or little meals... and so on. The really matter are the meals, and have a good meals, and maybe 2 snack.

I eat a good portion on meals. I don't eat fast, and stop when I feel satisfaction.

Misleading Title

I think the title of the article is misleading, and the researcher quoted in the article resorted to a "straw man" argument to make it sound like he had something provocative to say. "Six small meals at McDonald's clearly isn't going to help you lose weight." Well, duh. Nobody ever thought it did.

Apparently spacing out your eating throughout the day doesn't have any significant effect on how the calories are burned. But if eating small meals more often makes it easier for you to eat fewer calories (as it does for many people) then smaller meals do indeed help weight loss.

A more accurate title would have been: "Smaller meals don't increase calorie burn."

Just my persnickety $.02.

there are an awful lot of people who buy into - what I beleive to be a myth - that 6 meals a day - or eating regular small meals - does wonders to recharge your metabolism - the example that's usually given is like throwing logs onto a fire.. which I don't think the human body really works that way... what it comes down to - is total calories consumed in a day.. not necessarily when they are consumed..

I think it's something that some people find important for the weight loss mentality. It's to take their focus is off "OMG I"M STARVING", to satisfy the need to have food more often. While it may not do anything for them physically, it may keep their appetite more satisfied. It depends on the person I guess.

Yeah, I've heard that claim. I agree with you that it's wishful thinking, along with all the other "calories don't count" claims. Unfortunately, they do.

But the suggestion about eating small meals more often has been around for decades, and was originally based on the idea that you're less likely to pig out at meals if you don't wait until you're ravenous to eat. That part is certainly true for me. In fact... I think it's time for lunch! :)

Some person, doesn't feel good if they eat in the morning...another ones, feels nice...well, in my opinion we must find a balance to us.

To me, it's nice eat fresh fruit in the morning (breakfast)...I don't like eat before the lunch, more than breakfast or before the dinner...to my system 3 meals a day it's enough.

(everything, but not "one meal a day")

yeah, in some of the same books and articles that I've read that you need to eat several small meals a day to keep your metabolism up, they also turn around and talk about calorie cycling where you stay super low for a couple days then up your calories again before your metabolism catches on and you go in to starvation mode. So if it will take a couple days for that, why do I need to eat six meals a day again? There are a lot of contradictions out there.

the biggest frustration I had with trying to follow the 6 meals a day -- was i was always hungry - those small meals were never satisfying for me and in theory I knew I was eating again in a few hours.. but didn't stop me from always being hungry..

I was confused when my trainer told me to do the 6 meals a day. I tried it, for a while, and I tend to still follow it at times. I notice I am more hungry the days where I am at home, around food. When I'm out running errands and stuff, it is a lot easier not to focus on food. I am to the point where fast food isn't an option anymore, so that thought doesn't even enter my mind. I do notice when I eat a lot more than I usually would (like at Olive Garden, ahem..) I am definitely fuller for much longer than usual. I don't know if that has to do with the amount of food, or just the fact that they are enjoyed so much more.

You ate larger than normal portions at OG... and very calorie dense food (lotsa calories in the stomach just take time to process, thus feeling fuller longer). When you eat healthy, you tend to eat less calories and the digestion process isn't as long. Therefore the hunger is real...

Now about the whole six meals a day... to say it doesn't work is a bullshit blanket statement. I don't mean that it makes the metabolism speed up... I actually agree with Mal and others in the thread that say that. What I say is what most people believe, if eating more frequently but smaller portions helps you control your hunger and/or portion sizes, than FRIGGIN do it. DO IT! If it makes you hungry all the time because you're constantly thinking about food, than DUH, avoid it! change the game plan!

Sometimes people think because it worked for them or a few others than it is FACT. My friends all want MY plan... I tell them, NO. I can make suggestions but you are different and what worked for me, might make you miserable and more likely to fail in your efforts. So we work it out around their life style and most of them have had a lot of success. This article is almost assuming too much about what "works". I hate that it talks in absolutes in some points... You will never find guys like Tom Venuto or Steve writing articles in absolutes... it's just poor form.

There are a lot of you out there that disagree with eating lots of small meals a day but sorry, I am a firm believer in eating lots of small meals.

Most of the time people fail on their diet is because emotions take over when they want to have their next meal. Either they skipped their meals or waited too long before their next meal.

If you constantly eat, you will be eating when you are not hungry. That way, you have more control in your mind when you prepare your food or when you are out there buying your food. If you are not hungry and walking to the cafe to buy your salad, you will less distracted by delicious aroma of other foods.

Well, that's my two cents worth.

You are abso-freaking-lutely correct my friend. What ever works for you, do it. Personally, I can't do 6 small meals because I'm lazy and I don't want to measure things 6 times in a day. When I do 6 meals, I usually start guessing my portion sizes and I overeat. I do 2-3 meals. Less of a chance to mess up for me that way.

That's really interesting - because it's exactly the opposite of me. LOL

I'm not being a smartass, btw. It's just interesting how different people can be in the most basic mechanisms that power their body engines. Are you one of those people who doesn't like to eat breakfast and can be perfectly happy on one or two big meals a day? Just curious. I KNOW those people exist, they're just so totally not me!

Actually, my husband tends to be like that. Which makes it a little tricky for us to do joint meal planning.

when I started my "lifestyle change" almost 2 years ago - and I've said this countless times here before -_ i never really ate unhealthily -just too much of healthy foods or seemingly healthy foods.. but breakfast for me would be a pot or three of coffee (no sugar or milk or cream) and a low fat muffin if I wanted food but that was rare... Now - I have breakfast every single day.. Doesnt make me any less hungry by noon -but just makes me feel better....

I eat breakfast because I happen to love breakfast foods. It's my favorite meal of the day!

Me too!!!
I love going to restaurants that have all day breakfasts. I always order something from it. My friends are always like " Are you going to eat that now?" "It's dinner time!!!"
Can't help it. Luv those eggs!
