Seven or more eggs a week raises risk of death

I just saw this article and wanted to get some feedback on it.. some of the numbers seem ridiculous to me (such as the sample size) among other things.

A short excerpt from the end:

Men who ate the most eggs also were older, fatter, ate more vegetables but less breakfast cereal, and were more likely to drink alcohol, smoke and less likely to exercise -- all factors that can affect the risk of heart attack and death.

Sounds like a "correlation proves causation" argument to me.. what do you guys think?

Whats your point?
The people in these studies never lifted a weight or did any cardiovascular training.

Well, that's not completely true, it just says the people who ate the most eggs were "less likely to exercise."

I guess what bothers me is the way the study sounds to the average individual, without more clearly explaining the limited scope of their investigation.

That sounds like a completely ridiculous study. They should actually do and experiment, not a study, on how eggs in the diet effect things like cholesterol levels and other things related to heart disease. Like you said, this is probably a correlation, not a causation thing. You can't take a study of a few thousand people, isolate one single thing they eat, and then claim that that one thing causes an increased chance of death. There are just too many other variables.

Just because on average the person who eats seven or more eggs smokes and doesn't exercise (leads an unhealthy lifestyle) doesn't mean that eggs are bad? Am I the only one who sees this is an obvious fallacy?

2 or less eggs a day is fine. Cholestrol is both consumed and made within our bodies, so if you happen to consume quite a bit of exogenous cholesterol, your bodies production will decrease to compensate.

Yeah, all these years cigarettes have been given a bad name because of the vast number of smokers who die young and it turns out it was just because they were egg munchers all along!!!

I want more funding to find out why this link exists between eggs and smoking. Do eggs lead kids onto harder substances like tobacco? And obviously what other links exist between drug users and food groups? Maybe low-carbers are more likely to be coke heads? I think we need to know these things

Yesterday I ate 11 eggs.. am I going to die?

How much can the body regulate cholesterol? I mean, if your eat more cholesterol than your body actually produces itself, the body can't reduce its own production to cope with the extra dietary cholesterol? Is that how it works?

Nice picture CCR, a steroid i assume haha.

Yes thats how it works Karky, 11 eggs in one day is very worrying. Would be interesting to see your lipid content. But i guess your following one of those low carb diets, good luck with that, hope your health stays well ;)

woops, i meant testost. but that is a steroid so i was still right ;)

Thing is, i produce too much of it, i have to carefully withdraw 200ml of blood to get a normal value of what you and everyone else probably has.

stop the subtle sarcastic comments, Matt, there is no need. Next time I will report it.

Are you saying the body will not be able to regulate down its own production of cholesterol to 2500 mg of cholesterol (about how much there is in 11 eggs)?
How much cholesterol does the body produce on average each day?
Do you have any sources to confirm your statements?

Please dont think think i was being sarcastic, its genuine compassion for a fellow forum member.

No i dont and wont bother to link any back up evidence, its quite clear that the body will be flooded with too much cholesterol, you can go ask your doctor if you have doubts or dont believe.

Does anyone else know how much cholesterol intake the body is able to compensate for by dropping its own?

Matt, I don't just want to know if 11 eggs can be compensated for, but just about how much cholesterol the body can compensate for.

A passage right from the americanheart website,

"One egg contains about 213 milligrams of dietary cholesterol. The daily recommended cholesterol limit is less than 300 milligrams for people with normal LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. An egg can fit within heart-healthy guidelines for those people only if cholesterol from other sources — such as meats, poultry and dairy products — is limited"
