Running: A New Endeavor

Yeah dude, for sure. Are you going down alone or with others?

Haha, unfortunately, I am also newb to running events, so I have no clue. It would make sense if they sent it to pre-registrants ahead of time, but I'm not sure. If I don't get anything, I'll just bring the receipt down and all should be well.

Good luck goochy man ;)

Iv always been a brilliant runner until the last couple of years where i really let my health slip (smoking, drinking, lack of exercise...)

Im wanting to really improve my long distance/sprint running in the near future. Will be interesting to see how you get on.

My wife will be on a business trip so it's likely I'll be all by my lonesome. At least I got my mom to babysit my kids.

What part of town are you in?

I didn't print the receipt because I'm out of ink. I hope they can just look up my name. Maybe I'll call.

It would be nice if we got one of those 50 degree winter days huh?

...Thanks Tom, we'll see how it goes.

Cool cool, yeah I'll likely be showing up alone, after work. I live in Oakley, which is right off of the Smith and Edwards exit, so it only takes me 10 minutes to get downtown.

Oh yeah, I'm definitely keeping my fingers crossed for a decent day. It's gonna be a 6:30 race start, so it's only gonna start getting colder.

I'm in West Chester. We should plan to meet somewhere at the race

The 10 day forecast as of now states it will be a high of 37, low of 30. That's not bad at all. Only a 10% chance of precip.

You usually have to pick up the race packets there ahead of time. Sometimes prior to the day of the race, sometimes the same day before the race. That has how it has worked for every race I have been in. The usually provide you with that information when you register.

this is the best thing going!

Those are cool looking shoes man! Stubby~! you have lil feet? 2 miles on your first real outing very nice.

for the cold, tie a scarf around your face. they are wide, so you can try it single layer, double, and triple, it will help slow your breathing some.

the secind day- tomorrow you will be a lil more sore. it sounds like the connectors (my technicall term for the cord feeling thingys that connect the muscle fat parts to the bones) in your legs got sore- that is perfect. You have good joints and strong muscles. those connectors get quite sore- tendons I guess they are. whatever.

and you got Mark wrangles up too.

this is just great. Glad I came back and saw this tonoight!!!!

The packet pick up info should be on the registration website so go look again. Most races do have a prior pickup time. Here (CA) its usually a day before but also usually have the option of picking up on race day early. They have your name, no paperwork required.

Thanks for the info about pickup. I'll go back over the flyer
FF, I wear size 11.5, they must just look small in the pic

Last night I came down with whatever stomach bug my daughter had and I spent half the night vomiting and shivering. Maybe tmi, but I heaved so hard I broke blood vessels in my eyes. She was only sick for about 48 hours so hopefully I can get back out this weekend. I hope to God I can eat today. Yesterday I came way short of my intake

Ugh, bummer man. I hope you bounce back quickly! I'm about to head over to the indoor track at school to run a few miles. I really should run outside to simulate the race coming up, but the warmth is so tempting!

Hey man, I just popped in to see what was going on. I still feel pretty sh#$ty . I'm pretty sure I've had well under 1000 calories so far. I usually have 2100-2400 under my belt this time of day.

Have a good run. I'm going to try to get some rest

to answer your trainign plan question:
I like to train for a race length- then the mileage comes into play for planning. Formula wise I find the best for me, and many others is-

pace training 2 of the 5 days
speed training 1 of the 5 days
long run 1 of the five days
recovery run 1 of the 5 days.

Meaning
using RPE I set a run amount of time.
Let's say comfortable, 3-4 word sentence breathing- run 40 minutes. For me that is about 6 miles. For you that may be 3. BUT- you are not there yet. If you pick your race, then we know about what length of elevated heart rate time you need to be able to handle.

I think you are headed for a 10K in short time. Try to develop an 11mm run pace. an 11 min runner is not bad. so, for you 6.48 mile (10K) you will need to run for 75 minutes. Go out and try to run half that for now.

run 20 minutes away from the house, and then back 20 minutes. Develop a pace that allows you to do that comfortable.

RUNNING WELL IS ALL ABOUT CONTROL! Control is in pace, pace is in the breath, and the breath is what we train.

:)

Damn, I have to be honest with you; I wasn't planning on running 5 days a week. I was planning on 3 days...basically replacing my indoor cardio with outdoor running and still using the elliptical if the weather was too bad.

I guess I need to decide if I'm OK with limiting my running to what I can train for with 3 days per week or trying to revamp my whole system.

I've been lifting 3 days per week and doing cardio 3 days per week and one day of rest. I hate doubling up workouts in one day because it's best for me to get up before the kids (and my wife for that matter) and get done while I have only that to focus on.

After I just bought my shoes I got a flyer in the mail from New Balance offering me 20% off plus free shipping LOL.

Oh well, I think I would have gotten Asics anyway

3 days is plenty. i don't know why I assumed 5.

2 days of pace, and 1 long day.

what is your goal?

I really don't know. This is all so new. Short term I want to do the 10K like you said. Long term, who knows, maybe I'll reach marathon distance one day. I'll just have to see how I progress
