Weight-Loss

I wanted to start a thread to talk about the places you eat out and how they fit into your health plan to lose weight or just maintain.
Healthiest:
Chipotle: healthy raised animals, fresh veggies, nothing fried. A+

Fazolis: I know they use a lot of sodium, and are full of carbs, but it works for me for my 1st meal which is almost always breakfast and lunch together. I'll get a main pasta course, add a salad and breadsticks.. and I'll have eaten a very filling 1600 or 1800 calories. Dinner will be very light, consisting of a protein bar, yogurt, or something during or after work (since I work 2nd shift). This really works for me on days when I have woken up late but I can still still down and have some warm food.

Taco Bell: okay food. decent nutrition. almost always better than the burger joints. Also, I can easily count my calories here. Because of the beans and lettuce in most items, it's not hard to keep it under control if you eat here. I really like the Taco salad which is very filling and at 800 calories makes an appropriate meal for me.
......
These are the ones that I tend to frequent the most. I try to go online and count calories of almost every restaurant I go to, but many aren't available.

Subways: Loads of healthier options to choose from, nutrition-spreadsheet available so you know what's in the stuff and can make an informed choice of what to choose.

I can't remember eating out anywhere in a long time. The only place we ever get food from now if I don't cook is Subway. In fact, that's what we ate last night lol

If we ever went out to a restaurant, we'd either divide one plate and put the food on two plates for both of us or we'd ask for two to-go containers to store our left overs before the food even gets to our table. But it's been a while. We're such home bodies ^_^

Wendy's and Subway.

Here are some items from Wendys and their values:

item cals protein fat sat fat carbs
Wndys grill chikn go wrap 260 20 10 3.5 25
Wndys ultimate chkn grill 370 34 7 1.5 42
Wndy Garden side salad 60 1 0 0.0 14
Wndy Ceaser side salad 120 4 7 2.5 13
Wendy's Chili small bowl 220 18 7 3.0 22
Wndys Jr. Frosty choc 150 4 4 2.5 26
Potatos, baked 145 4 0 0.0 33

If you get fat free salad dressings and skip the croutons, skip the butter and sour cream on the potato (I like to put my chili on it), then you can make a meal plan that is very healthy.

I usually get the ultimate chicken grill sandwich, small chili, and garden side salad with fat free french dressing. I also get the light lemonade and mix it 50/50 with water.

Surprisingly I agree with Taco Bell too. I like the bean burritos. Full of fiber and quite filling. Wendy's is good too. I love the Caesar side salad and chili.

I wonder how much more business Chipotle got after Food Inc came out...

Thanks BugDude. When I was first stating out I downloaded a bunch of those menus to my pc and eventually I memorized the fat / calorie contents in each, but this is nice for people starting out. I understand the appeal of subway but personally i tend to get rather sick of eating sandwiches. (unless its bahn mi!)

I'm gonna miss Bojangles and Hardee's when I get back to Texas :(

Want to make it easier? Create an excel spreadsheet with a database of food values. Then insert a second worksheet with a header at the top that adds up all of your calories, protein, fat, and carbs and calculates your percentages. Use this to plan out everything you will eat that day (copying items from the first page to the second) and it is easy to track your totals. I set up a third sheet with the days down the left and put my totals from each day.

ROFLMAO!!!!!
no wonder you're having trouble keeping weight off when you're away!
hardee's is pretty horrible as far as food goes!
And Bojangles???? really? hahaha!
Oh, well... you're on vacation, time to enjoy the local cuisine, right?

LOL! I know both restaurants are ridiculous calorie wise but I've been practicing much restraint when it comes to pigging out on it....so yeah....

BugDude, My Fitness Pal's Food Diary has a really great system that keeps track of everything for you. Not sure if you've ever been there :)

Speaking of Taco Bell. They are in the news lately due to claims that their "beef" shouldn't be called beef (meat is defined as "animal flesh" and the USDA says meat must be at least 40% or else they can't call it beef).

interesting to see how this turns out.

I was going to mention the Taco Bell "beef" thing too. I probably won't go there for a while. Just one more reason to avoid the low-quality fast food places, at least for me.

Guys... really.. there's nothing wrong with the "beef"
Have you looked at the ingredients? It's just beef (only 36%) and filler.
The filler being mostly grain products. This is the same stuff added to hot dogs to reduce the meat content, and therefore cost.
Really... .it's not bad for you, or gross. It's just not 100% beef.
In fact, you could almost call it a beef substitute for vegetarians!

Here's a small part of taco bell's response:
. Our seasoned beef recipe contains 88% quality USDA-inspected beef and 12% seasonings, spices, water and other ingredients that provide taste, texture and moisture.
88% vs. 36%, quite a difference, huh? I guess our courts will decide. ROFL
....
Although, after having a look at the list, there's really not that much room for an 64% worth of filler. There's no soy. The only filler is some kind of oat product. I wouldn't swear that the meat is at 88%, but I'd honestly be surprised if it less than 60% UNLESS they are leaving out ingredients on their labeling (which is illegal, and very unlikely)

I don't care what's in it.....I call it delicious! LOL! I love Taco Bell :blush5:

I posted the article because it's good to be in the know. Everyone will take from it what they like ^_^ As for me, I learned an interesting fact about what is considered meat. I am very disappointed lol
You're condemning before there's a trial.
There no real establish facts yet.
Innocent until proven guilty.

I'm not condemning anyone.
I didn't say I believed the article.
What I'm disappointed about is the USDA standards on what can be called "meat" and what can't.
That's what I was talking about in my quote.

(sorry I misunderstood you)
Ok......... Yeah, 40% does seem a bit weak, doesn't it.
This is probably the result of "big business" sending lots of presents to our elected officials. Yay.... go politics.
