Calories burned: Hot vers cold temps.

Hey everyone!

Fill free to move this topic if it's not in the right area.. Wasn't sure where to drop this..

Question is:

When doing your workout, or even doing your basic tasks in a day, does anyone know what the difference is in burning calories when the temperature is hot vers cold?

Of course your body would burn more calories when the temperature is hot due to trying to keep cool, but done anyone know the numbers on it? Or is this a task hard to nail down because of how our bodies work?

It got me thinking, and as an example: Lets say I burn 2000 calories on a hike. Ok, so I what temperature? 65 degrees vers 80, even 90 degrees... You know? How much is that difference..?

When they do the calories burned calculator, is there a specific test done at a cretin temperature? So obviously, I'll burn more calories at 90 vers 60, but what's the difference?

Another: If your body burns 2500 calories just to live each day, how much more will you burn doing the same task, but at 85 degrees.. etc..

Just an interesting thought... :)

I've often thought about this. I actually thought that your body would burn more when it's cold because it's burning more fuel to stay warm. I suppose the harder it is to maintain 98.6, the more calories you'd burn? I'm by no means a good source for this, but I've often speculated...

Totally! Good point about the cold too!.. I just figured there might be some facts out there, that we could ad onto our current workouts. :)
 
I have spoken to a dietition about this who in turn has read research on this, there is a difference, but its so minor that its near insignificant and as much as the body may burn more calories when its cold, it also may decide to store more fat around your organs to keep them warm as a result.

It was- we were all very anorexic- recovered but all still in various stages of recovery in our minds. We would have a q&a session with a highly qualified dietition and the things we learned were really quite facinating- I'd love to study further but I don't have the intelligence, some stuff sticks but alot of it (normally ths stuff that has nothing to do with me!) just goes in one ear and out the other.

The hot-cold thing was asked in the midst of summer when we were having arguments amoung ourselfs at weather hot weather burnt more calories (sweating etc) then cold weather (shivering), infact its so little its insignificant, even for a 6 stone anorexics point of view. We were shown the evidence, we/I trusted the dietition as she really did reveal some uncomfortable home truths and was honest with everything else (even if it supported a negative weight mindset).

This one though was explained so well that I don't for one minute worry about the temperature I am in unless its highly extreme and I have not wrapped up well. (And even then not much: the winter, its freezing, it snows, I go out, its cold and I can walk at about 1-2 miles per hour), the summer, its hot, there is no snow, I am not shovering to keep warm yet I can walk at 3 miles an hour, I go out more, I am able to move easier. Thats just one example but haveing said all that, I lose more weight in the summer then in the winter, so I don't even really believe the winter months and all that shivering to anything what so ever.
