I need to change the way i eat but im notexactly sure how to start. I know i have to cut out sugars and starches because those are my biggest crutch. Im an emotional eater and always seem to find food to ease my stress level.
I was already obese when the doctors put me on some very aggressive bipolar meds. In two years time i went from 300 close to 500 pounds. I took myself off the bipolar meds so im not constantly hungry anymore but at my current weight there isn't much i can do in the way of exercise. Even walking is now a problem. I get the shakes a then dizzy. My body frame simply cant support this much weight.
My family doctor gave me a prescription for some diet pills that should give me some energy to get off the couch and start some kind of exercises.
Update: thanks to allcdnboy not quite as lost now but still have an unfathomable distance to go.

Welcome to the forum sweets - what diet pills have you been given? I imagine at 500lbs exercise is quite difficult, has your doctor advised you about diet changes you can make? Diet will be key in getting you to a weight where exercise will be more of a possibility.. maybe posting your food/calories on here may help? We can offer some support to you on your journey xx

I'm sure you've just left this out but when you say you took yourself off your bipolar meds? Do you mean your doctor knows about this and has a plan in place for you or you're trying something new?

It took me almost 3 years of behavioral therapy, strict scheduling, counseling and a diet/exercise regime to be able to go off of medication and develop skills to help me (I'm bipolar too). It was with the help of a team of doctors and psychologists so whenever I hear "I went off meds", I immediately get a bit concerned and worried.

Don't forget, being healthy is not just healthy body - congrats to you for recognizing that you want a healthier body though! It also includes a healthy mind and spirit though. If your body is getting healthier but you're stuck in a cycle of highs and lows, that's not healthy living.

Also, why did the doctor prescribe you medication? If you're around 500lbs, even simple changes 'should' (in theory) make a huge difference in weight loss. Does this doctor know about your bipolar?

Take care of yourself and good luck! This forum really does offer a LOT of support and advice. I've genuinely grown to care about some of these folks and want them to succeed (and myself too!).

Welcome!

My doctor prescribed phentermine. I've been on it b4 and only had positive results with it. It gives me abunch of energy and kills my appetite especially where sweets r concerned.
My doctor advised me not to so much go on a diet but i needed to instead change the way i eat. No more just eating one large meal a day with abunch of sweet snacks to fill the rest of the day like cokes ice cream etc... Keep my protein as high as possible. Carbs as low as possible(borderline diabetic.) fats r fine just limit them to whats naturally in whole foods. Restrict butter oils things that r just loaded with fat. Dont use shortening but use things like olive oil and olive oil based butter spreads for cooking. Keep sat fats as low as possible... Sat fats try and keep below 10grams.
Since im so obese i dont have to b as restrictive as someone close to their ideal weight that is trying to lose those last 20 pounds.
To be at my weight i have been taking in about 4500ish calories so i dont need to starve myself with something like 1000 calories. I should be able to lose weight taking in 1800 to 2200 calories per day.
If you wanted to cal it a diet i guess it would b high protein low carb.
The calorie reduction isnt a problem since ill be eating mostly unprocessed foods. Fresh meat baked or broiled fresh veggies anyway i want just limit oil and butter that is normally overdone in the cooking process. Then cut out the nonos like candy coke cake ice cream potatoes pasta rice bread except for the occational 1/2cup of brown rice.
So just one day at a time i suppose.

Yes my doctor knew i was going off my meds. I have bipolar 1 with psychotic features. Nothing scary like seeing or hearing things. With me its tactile. So feeling sensation of ants all over your skin. I was on depakote and haldol and in the last 2 years i gained about 160 pounds. I dont know which med it was or both but i was hungry all of the time. I do still have a script for the haldol but thats only for the tactile things that should ramdomly pop up. I havent had to take any as of yet. The depression is manageable and when i get manic i just have to be aware of the situation.
My family doctor that prescribed the phen does know about the bipolar situation. So she only gave me 10 to start just to make sure its not going to trigger something i cant control. So far everything is just fine. I have a good amount of energy not really hungry and not missing the sweets.
Trust me if i start having any manic symptoms ill come off of the meds.

Hi Rebel & welcome to the diary section of WLF. 1800-2200 cals a day should do the trick for you. Having 3 decent meals for the day, with lean protein & fresh vegetables & fresh fruit in between is the go. Cutting out processed food is the best thing you can do for your body. Try doing some gentle exercise each day like going for a short walk. Getting outside in the fresh air does wonders for my mood. Persistence & determination will be required to get you to where you want to be. It will be worth it. All the best, Cate.

That's awesome to hear!! I'm so glad you have your doctors on board. I know there's this common practice (and I've done it) to hide changes/information from doctors about stopping meds for whatever reason - it's so great to hear that your doctors are on board with helping you lose the weight.

I got into running which may not be possible right now but give it a few months! Seriously, it's the best antidepressant I've found. I've been off meds for almost 5 years now. It's a LOT of work and constantly self-monitoring but if you can do it, it's pretty awesome to not have to deal with all the crappy side effects. If you do need the meds though, maybe some of the habits you're working on now as well as the weight loss will help the meds work better with less effects :)

I was kind of thinking along those same lines. Running will take awhile. I get week in the knees standing up cooking. That will change once i get 50 or so pounds off. After that plan on walking more and work up to jogging once my weight allows.

Hey Rebel! Have you considered exercising while sitting down for the moment? I imagine your body could really profit from just gently increasing circulation for five minutes every hour or so. Good luck on your journey, LaMa.

Well of coarse we can. It really helps talking to people. You dont feel quite so alone. Besides this forum is much cheaper than therapy lol.
