Prefer Home Or Gym?

Exactly!

young whipper snapper

lmao !!!!! :)

I really prefer the gym. I find being around other people gives me the motivation to continue with my workout even when my body says " hey lets take a break ". Plus on and electricians salary, there would be no way I could afford the vast array of equipment and facilities provided by the gym. Oh, did I mention the cute ladies?:drool5:

danjillhaijon and liacdawn...doesn't your gym have babysitting services? 24 Hour Fitness has something called Kids Club...you work out, they play. That's one of the many features they have that I haven't been able to use...no kids yet. :leaving:

So true, there is more motivation at the gym, stay focused. Too much distractions at home that serve for excuses.

I've toyed with this question a lot, and I've been thinking about buying a bike for my house for quite sometime. I have to admit though, I would say I get more out of a workout at the gym then I do at home. I agree that there are way too many distractions at home to keep me busy; even if it was laundry, I would probably be able to convince myself that somehow it's the same amount of cardio as 45 minutes on the eliptical. ;)

I'm more motivated at the gym. I always think to myself, "If I cave this last 5 minutes, the guy beside me is gonna know it!". That usually works for me. That being said however, I think having a backup system at home for those mornings when you REALLY don't feel like leaving the house (perhaps 50 cms of snow hit, something like that), would be great so that you have absolutely no excuse.

Haha...that is so true. I also put that same scenario in my mind..."If I only do 30 minutes, they will know!"...haha. Yes, at 24 Hour Fitness, its such a big gym, a lot to observe on the cardio machines when you waiting for the time to pass. The environment is awesome.

Are you considering investing in a bike because your membership is too expensive and you thinking of the long run? How much do you pay for membership?

Well, I'm considering both at the same time to be honest. My gym membership is currently free (thank god). Stereotypically, if I was to be at the other gym of my choice it would be about $60+tax for a regular member. Which, to me, is really quite a bit of money. I think the bike investment would be so I can double my cardio efforts and erase excuses from my plate. A fairly decent bike goes for about $200 from the research I've done - I was thinking about it this morning and how I'd fit it into my plan as well. I have a lot of "fat weight" I need to lose so I need to focus on cardio at this point. If I bought a bike, it would go in my master bedroom so I could roll out of bed in the morning, do 30 minutes before going to work, and then additionally throw in cardio and/or weights in the evenings. We shall see!

Wow $60 + a month?! I pay $29 a month, but they offer different offers on their site for different people's budgets. This one just happens to work for me. That is great if you did just roll out of bed to a work out. Working out in the early AM really helps to give you that extra energy in the morning replacing that cup of coffee. I can go before work at like 5 am. It's helps that 24 Hour Fitness is open....OoO yea 24 hours! :p

Gym

When I am at home, I relax too much and take too much time off

When I am at the gym, I drove there and want to get work done so I can go home

Being at home makes me lazy, Being at the gym makes me active

I couldn't agree with you more. The gym certainly does offer more motivation to keep going. Too many excuses that prevent us from working as hard at home.

How much time do you normally spend at the gym? I try and dedicate at least 1.5-2 hours at 24 Hour Fitness..4-5 times a week.

I spend anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes at the gym, 4-5 times a week. Resistance/weight training 3 times a week, interval training 4 times a week laps in the pool 1 time a week.

I prefer the gym. Once you get to the gym you have to workout, at home it's too easy to get side-tracked.
On the other hand, the gym isn't always that interesting. I'm glad the weather is warming up and I can start getting more exercise outside.
I was at the gym the other day, got on a bike for my warm-up... totally unsuspecting... grabbed the handle bars and they were wet... it was gross. I know its just sweat, but it was still a less than pleasant experience.

Wow, you sound like you get a great variety as well. That is awesome! Isn't it fun?

My gym has santized wipes to use on the equipment, those wet handles could be from it being wiped down with those..although it could have been real sweat. Ewe, yuck!

I love my workouts, the program I'm on (Turbulence Training) keeps it very interesting and the workouts are short yet effective. That's good, because I get bored very easily.

It is a lot of fun when you enjoy what you're doing. With the weather getting nicer here in Cleveland, I'm able to add riding my bike to work each day (8 miles a day) to my workout routine.

Today I decided to ride to work, then ride to the gym at lunch (another 2 miles each way), get 15-20 minutes of intervals in and then ride back to work.

That was a good workout and I'm still tired, but it felt SOOOOO good.

And while I'm at work, I sit on a fitball for my chair so I'm getting a good workout all day long :D

So true, I also get bored very easily doin ordinary weight/cardio routines. It def makes it fun to mix variety into your work out! I'm glad the gym offers the features to do so.

How comfy are the fit balls? Do they improve your posture?

I think they're very comfortable. I sometimes miss being able to kick back and put my feed on the desk.

As for posture, the ball really forces you to sit up straight, there is no easy way to slouch.

If my back is tight or I need to stretch, I can just roll the ball out and scoot down and stretch my back on it.

For people stuck behind a desk all day, I really suggest giving it a try. Don't start off trying to go 8 hours, you need to work yourself up to that.

Are these the balls you are referring to:

Did a personal trainer suggest you start using that ball?

Yes, those are the balls... if you use one as a chair, go one size larger than you would use to exercise with.

As for the PT suggesting it, no... I did it all on my own. I started about 4 years ago and was on a ball for 3 of those years. Then the ball popped (I'd have loved to see my face as I fell down) and I just grabbed a chair. After a year, I finally got sick and tired of slouching and poor posture, so I just got back on the ball this past month and I feel much better.
