Perfecting my plan, now to implement!

Whew! Back on my game today. Breakfast: 2 whole wheat toasts w/country crock, 1 cup OJ, 1 cup Skim milk extra. Lunch is going to be a Turkey sandwich on whole wheat with 10 saltine crackers and an apple. I've started my day off right with documenting everything on Fitday. I'll finish it off right with a workout and some cardio.

The weekend was crazy! My friend got a new smoker and Friday, Saturday and Sunday we smoked ribs, brisket, salmon, shrimp etc. I ate and drank too much which has been taking it out of me for the 1st couple of days of the week as far as energy for working out. I've let this happen too frequently and it has basically halted my progress. I work all the next week to make up for the "fun" I had the weekend before. Mentally it's taking it's toll because my lack of discipline has caused me to come to a standstill in the great progress I was making. However, I've at least managed to maintain my progress so I need to get a handle on this before I start going backwards.

My diet has been really good the last couple of days. I'm still tracking on fitday and staying within my goals (except on the weekends). My body is worn out still from the weekend. Training resumes tomorrow. Even if my body says no my mind will have to say yes. It's mental now and I can't let it get the best of me.

The mental game is more than half the battle, seriously. Recognizing the set backs and how you're feeling because of your "fun" is a good step in the right direction too! Determine in your mind to let nothing stand in the way of your progress, you're doing great!!! PS the smoker sounds SUPER GOOD. yum!

Thanks Sparrow. All good today. I've got meetings for work this weekend so my 1st planned 5k is out the window. But, there are plenty more to come. I'll keep you all posted of my progress. Thanks for the input, Greg

Damn, been sick. Still feel like crap. I'll post soon as far as weight, workouts etc., once I get back on track. Going to bed. Hopefully something fitness wise tomorrow. Like FF says, sweat daily. Hope I can take his advice soon. Cya, Greg

Whew, I'm feeling a little better thank goodness. I woke up and the sheets on the bed were soaked. I don't know if I had a fever that finally broke or what. My throat is less sore this morning. It looks like I'm finally on the road to recovery.

I'm going to apply for a new job today. I've been working sales for the last couple of years and they have cut our commission twice. It seems just about the time I get to a comfortable point they cut our commission again. Anyway, I'm applying for 2 registered dietitian positions at the VA medical center nearby. Starting pay is right at what I made last year and that doesn't include my 12 1/2 years experience or my masters degree. I actually did my internship at this place and a lady I used to work with at another place currently works there and absolutely loves it.

That's it for now. Hopefully I'll continue to feel well and will workout today. Take care and I'll talk to ya soon, Greg

Diet: Well within goals, between 1600-1700 calories right now. Might have night time snack if I'm feeling hungry.

Workout:

Bench Press 5x10
Tricep Pushdowns 4x10
Widegrip lat pulldowns 3x10
Seated pulley rows 3x10
Standing straight bar curls 3x10
Preacher curls w/straight bar 2x12

Cardio:

30 minutes on stationary bike

Overall thoughts: I've let things get away from me the last couple of weeks. Thank goodness I've only gained a few pounds (2 or 3). I simply haven't had the desire to workout or watch my diet until today. I normally bitch about being sick but maybe it did me good to feel so bad for a few days. I'm finally more focused and expect my progress to take off again. In the past a setback like this would be the end of my fitness quest. For some reason it's different now.

I think you're making a good decision looking for a new job. It seems that those VA jobs are far superior to your current situation.

Thanks g8r. You've been on my mind for the last few days. Looks like the "big day" is coming soon. Before long you'll be better than new. That's cool. I bet you can't wait. Take care, Greg

Maintaining brother, maintaining, lol. I'm really having a hard time getting back into this. I don't know what my deal is. I seem extraordinarily tired when I get home from work and can't seem to pull it all together to workout. I know if I "force" myself for a couple of days that I'll get back into it but I can't even seem to do that at the present time. It will all change for the better! I'm keeping a positive attitude and I still have the desire, I just gotta do my part.

Is your surgery still planned for Tuesday? I'm sure it's scary but you'll be as good as new (or better) before you know it. I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Take care and thanks for checking in. Greg

Hiya Greg. Is working out something you can do before work? Or are you one of those up before dawn work people I always feel very sorry for :(

Keep at it, you can do it! Its always hard to get back into after a minor set back. Happens to everyone. Before long your body will be buzzing on the adrenaline and crave the endorphins! (or "dolphins" as my 5 yr old calls them!)

Hey Sparrow, thanks for stopping by. I don't have a whole lot of time before work but I might have to start getting up earlier to fit my workout in. I really think I can get back into the evening workouts, I just gotta get my butt back in gear for a few days and then I'll be fine. I'll keep updating a little more frequently to try to keep you all posted. I've slacked off Fitday and everything. I never thought something so relatively minor could get me off track. Talk to ya soon, Greg

Thanks Greg. I am meeting with the cardiothoracic surgeons at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville tomorrow. If they convince me that I will be in the same quality of care as surgeons at the world-renowned Mayo Clinic Rochester Minnesota, I will stay at Jacksonville. Otherwise, I will go to Minnesota. In either event, I have decided to postpone the surgery by a few days to a week, in part because the week after next is spring break and the kids are out of school.

Thanks again and good luck!

Richard

Wow, I feel alive again, hehehe.

I was sitting on the couch, flipping through channels and thinking to myself that there isn't a da mn thing on TV. Then, it hit me! Why not get off your fat arse and DO SOMETHING! It's funny to know that I get stir crazy when I don't have anything to do yet I still let myself fall back into that trap again.

Workout:

Bench press 5x10
Tricep pushdown 4x10
Widegrip pulldowns 3x10
Closegrip pulldowns 3x10
Straight barbell curls 4x8

Cardio: Stationary bike 30 minutes

Thoughts: Geez I feel pretty good. I went fairly light on the weights today because it's been a while since i've worked out.

I've also lost a fair amount of endurance on cardio. But, it will come back quickly. I don't know why i do this to myself but I'm glad I don't just stop for good.

Back to fitday tomorrow. Time to take back control. Cya, Greg

Quick update:

Finally back in the better eating mode. I've been much more particular about what I've been eating the last few days.

Exercise is still lacking. I'm still quite tired in the afternoons but it is improving. I expect evening workouts to resume soon.

I'm still keeping my goals in my mind. I'm not giving up but having to realize that with the 40 more pounds I have to lose, I'm going to have some ups and downs. Ultimate goal: Ups to last longer than the downs.

That's it for now. Will update as I go along. Thanks, Greg

Hey Greg, sup? Howz things going? I have about 1 more week of watching Seinfeld reruns before I can attack the stationary bike at the YMCA again and about 3 more weeks before I can attack the road again. I don't know if I told you this, but I was out of the hospital 3 days after open heart surgery. The nurse could only remember one other patient getting out in 3 days and she's been doing this for 20 years.

The hospital made the mistake of thinking they were operating on a human, not a machine. So, they expected normal recovery. Little did they know of your super recuperative powers. You'll be back on the stationary bike soon and on the road before you know it.

I've got a 70 mile "tour de cure" in Tulsa on May 17th then a similar length ride June 28th, the "tour de corn", yes, corn, in East Prairie Missouri on June 28th. They've added a century this year so that is another option if my training is going well.

I've got to get out on the road this evening to at least start training a little. Since I've got rides planned, it's easier to get motivated. I notice in your log, FF's log and Sparrow's log that you often have many events planned and I'm sure this helps keep you going.

Anyway, I'm putting dinner in the oven here in a few minutes, then off to ride. Take care and I'm still looking for a late season century. Take care, Greg

Short ride finished, a short 6 mile loop, 22 minutes, 16mph. My legs feel fine but my lungs suck due to lack of recent cardio. I was really getting some good endurance when I fell off the wagon.

Anyway, I've got 4 weeks to get geared up for a 73 mile ride. It sounds like a lot but with focus it won't be a problem. I've already got my weeks planned for 2 mid-length rides during the week, say 20 or so miles each, then a long ride on a weekend day, say 25, 40, 50 and 60 miles each ending with the 73 mile ride on the final weekend. Todays ride was short but it was the 1st time on my bike this year. I'll plan a 12-15 mile ride later in the week then 25 this weekend.
