New Years Resolutions

End of year reflection - New year resolutions

2007 was a good year for me. I started the year as an overweight recovering cardiac patient 6 weeks removed from surgery and during 2007:

1. Lost about 25 pounds of fat
2. Gained about 10 pounds of muscle
3. Lowered overall weight from 218 to 203
4. Lowered my bf from about 28 to 18%
5. Lowered my resting heart rate from 74 to 54
6. Increased my cruising bike speed from 16mph to 21mph
7. Resumed running after a 20year layoff and broke 28 minutes in a 5K
8. Lowered my pant size from 36 to 34
9. Got rid of manboobs that were starting to show up
10. Felt good about myself when walking around shirtless
11. Commenced proper, effective swimming
12. Knocked a few years off my "effective" age (subjective, of course)

But, there was a lot of unfinished business that I am going to expand on in 2008:

1. Lose another 20 pounds of fat (from continuing what I've been doing)

2. Gain about 15 pounds of muscle - mainly in triceps, biceps, and lats; secondarily in pecs

3. Lower weight to 185 (the last time it was that low was in 1989 when I was 29)

4. Lower bf to a Chillenesque 10 - 12% (but probably not possible because I don't watch my diet as closely as others)

5. Lower resting heart rate to the 40's (current mid-50's is impressive, but the 40's is downright studriffic)

6. Be able to break 1:05 in a 40km (26miles) time trial on a time trial bike (a good TT bike and helmet and form are worth about 2 - 3 mph over a comparable road bike)

7. Break 25 minutes in a 5K run

8. Lower my pant size to 33 (which is about the smallest I can get with my big ol' hips)

9. Be able to break 25 minutes in a 1500m swim with minimal or no rest stops

10. Complete the Tri-Shark Triathlon on June 8, 2008 in under 1:30

11. Complete an Olympic length triathlon in under 3.5 hours by the end of 2008

12. Finish a Sunday ride with the breakaway pack

I wouldn't be surprised on any of these for a guy like you.

If you get the swimmers mile in 25 minutes you WILL NOT be taking any rests. The run is a sub 8 minute pace!

Maybe i won't bean you with the raquetball--- you are in some serious training.

MY 08 resolution. To make damn sure I am just a bit better at any discipline g8r80 improves in. if I can do that, even though i am 15 years younger ;), I will be doing very well.

what a guy you are,

FF

Not so fast, Junior! By my math, you are 9 years younger!

awesome G8r. I hope others post on this thread.

2007 was a good year for me as well. Here are highlights only fitness-wise:

1. joined a triathlete group after being a recreational gym-rat for far too long
2. pushed my limits farther than I ever have in training for my first tri season
3. placed 3rd at my first and second sprint tri
4. completed my first olympic tri at 2:49 (7th in agegroup)
5. finished first century ride in the pouring rain
6. lost a few pounds, gained muscle
7. got a confidence to my madness I never expected

Hoping in 2008:

1. Break the 2:40 barrier in the oly and 1:30 in sprint
2. complete first half ironman and be more than prepared for it
3. break 1:45 half marathon
4. complete the season injury free and nutritionally sound
5. have a better power to weight ratio
6. Do another century to redeem the first
7. HAVE FUN and take breaks when warrented without guilt

2007

Late April, early May started seriously getting into nutrition and exercise. Started re evaluating my entire diet. started jump skipping regularly, and ate a certain diet. In 3 1/2 months lost around 45 pounds, and at my lowest weighed 140 at 5'9.

Late september, started weight lifting seriously and have gained a gained some muscle since then, and made good strength gains.

Goals for 2008:
I'm hoping to make some good lean mass gains by late April, so i can look back and see how far i've come in just one year.

Other goals.
To get a job..
Get accepted into Uni...

and ye

I had a good 2007 too

1. Replaced posting on a forum for people with a large amount of weight to lose to posting here - this was really big for me because it represents a change in how I think about myself-not as someone struggling to lose weight but as someone committed to bring fit. Pretty consistently journaled food and exercise.

2. Lost 15 pounds - don't know what was fat loss and what was muscle gain but net is 15 less than last year

3. Set my 'go to the gym goal' to five times a week (up from three) and made it almost always when it was feasable (not traveling, not sick, etc)

4. Got a better handle on food-making my own lunch, eating consistently during the week, eating better on weekends. Gave up Friday bagels, raisins in my oatmeal, bread with lunch and it was all pretty painless once I committed to it.

5. Learned to do push-ups-another really big thing because I didn't think I could

6. Started Pilates classes - another thing I thought I couldn't do

7. Began to 'see' the changes I've made-I had a few times when I just knew that I looked awesome-part of that was actual improvement but some was just my head catching up with my body.

8. Non fitness related, got offered a new position at work and had the confidence to accept the challenge

9. After four plus years, I'm beginning to feel really comfortable at the gym-like I belong there - another big mental change for me

Goals for 2008
1. To post more on the forum - not just my journal but to participate more

2. Learn how to use the eliptical and add it in to my cardio routines

3. More intense cardio, and maybe more often

4. Get good at pushups, tackle chinups

5. Lose 10 more pounds

6. Add 20 pounds to what I can deadlift

7. Take eating to the next level of clean-better weekend eating, not use food for comfort

8. Find out what my bodyfat percent is and monitor that as well as what I weigh

Happy 2008 everyone!

Personally, I dont make New Year resolutions. I had my personal goals ceated and executed before the year started, and this will continue past the new year without change (unless the time comes where a change is needed during the year):

Item 1. Get my BF Lower than the 8%, which was achieved and maintained through May to September 07)-- to about 7% (I set my own personal standards).

Item 2. Goal weight: 160 to 162 (5'7") UP 6 approximate pounds (or up 6 approximate pounds from 154 lbs at 8% BF)

Item 3. Continue to deal with dietary complications effectively (NUMBER 1 in importance): Through proper mental preparation and outward physical execution, and implementing and then modifiying external choices made to assist with dietary complications (synopsis).

Item 4. Continue to deal with training complications effectively to maintain "consistency and progress" (Number 2 in importance)

Item 5. Steering and properly maintaining Items 3 and 4, will give me me Item 2 without a hesitation or any doubt in my mind what-so-ever.

Pretty simple.

Happy New Year!

Best regards,

Chillen

I can't believe we don't have a thread for these already! Was everyone too hung over to post yesterday?

If you have a new years resolution please post it here. Then the fear of the board members mocking laughter when you fail might just keep you on the right track ;)

Mine is to gain weight and drop BF% before summer, and then before the end of the year I want all my new XL clothes to be too small by next new year.

Mine is to eat as clean as possible, get back on track and to really hit my new and improved gym hard when it re-opens in a weeks time! Cannot wait!

I really do want to see some big improvements in my overall look and strength.

My gym opened today and there was a ton of people in there i never seen before...normally its the same cycle of people i see and hardly ever new faces but so many new people with there.......resolutions

I'll be heading off to the gym in the next couple of days...Should be interesting to see if there's some new faces around. Granted i've only been to this particular gym twice but you can generally tell the new years club apart from people that have been there a while....

Now back on topic...I have absolutely no resolutions. I've only ever made one in my life and that was back in 05 when i wanted to improve my fitness, get bigger, stronger, look better whatever...It's been 3 years...I guess i actually stuck to mine. I did hit a slump in the gym in 07 which i've currently been rectifying in the last month but i don't consider it a resolution. It was the best year of my life but I made a few decisions in 07 that i'm not too proud of. I can't go back and fix those things but i can try and make it up if you like by making better choices in what i do now. I guess i technically do have resolutions but i don't really count them as such

I don't think I really have any resolutions either. I have a lot going on this year, so I just want to focus on making that turn out in the most positive way. I only have 2 quarters left, then I graduate in June. So it will be interesting to see what companies I interview with, and whether the company I currently work for will make me a nice offer. I hope so, since I really like this place. Then I have to decide on grad school, where and if I want to go...

My fitness goals aren't really a resolution since I been at them for so long, I just consider them day to day progress!

Depending on tonight, I may not go to the gym for the next month and concentrate at home. I haven't been to my normal gym for about a week and a half, and I've been at the rec gym swimming and running a bit last week. I'm thinking about just peeking into the gym during lunch hours and see how busy it is.

As far as resolutions... I never had any... ever. I don't see why you have to wait until new years to change something about yourself nor do I see the logic in determining what to change about yourself during new years. If anything, a new years resolution should be remembering the previous year and all its glory that you should cherish.

Come on people, don't be all boring and take the 'I don't make resolutions' approach. Get with the new years spirit and take this opportunity to give yourself a goal to shoot at; or just to take the piss and make up some stupid sh*t that makes people laugh :D

I read that but didn't think it was for other people to post their resolutions in, anyway, that one's in journal and loads of people won't even go in there and see it

For 2008 I hope to:

1) Gain at least 10 more lbs of muscle.
2) Increase my deadlift and bench
3) Get rid of the last of the belly once and for all.
4) Keep eating healthy, but have just a feeeew more cold beers :beerchug:
5) Move to a new country.

No resolutions for me. I'm just going to keep doing what I've been doing.
