Less than 500 calories per day, is it okay?

I respond to this post in the gentlest of tones.

If you eat a lot less than 1200 calories per day, and you're 49 lbs overweight, according to you, how does that seem "fine"? Shouldn't you be a size zero eating that amount? Or did you just start this calorie level?

I dont mean to be rude but what is your expertise in advising someone else that less than 1000 calories per day is healthy or sufficient.

Most people do not eat 500 calories for the rest of their lives. What do you girls think will happen when you start eating again? Dont you think you're body will be used to a lower calorie amount and as soon as you eat a normal day's calories you'll gain a bunch of the weight right back? There are no short cuts here. Do it healthy and keep it off forever. Do it fast and yo yo back to your starting weight and higher.

ummm, i just started and i'm not saying that i eat everyday less then that, on some days yes i do. I dont count cals, so i really would no. I do eat, dont think i dont, i eat my 5 fruits a day and veggies and my potein but at the same time you have to think about that stuff dont really have a lot of cal to began with. Ohhh and by the way i'm not a yo-yo dieter or straving my self. never is that good, but this person says shes feels fine.

wow, i think this is the 3 "brawl" tonight...must be in the air

yeah i guess so, sorry if people think im beign bitchy tonight....i'm really not trying to be.

Likewise.

And I hope that people continue to spread misinformation forever and ever so I can get rich off the misinformed someday!!!!!111

Not to beat a dead horse :D. But how would you know if eating below 1000 cals is an effective weight loss method if you just started it and have only lost a few pounds? But then you say you dont count calories so you really dont even know for sure how many calories you're getting. Which again would make it difficult to judge how effective that would be in the long run.

OMG, surely you are not suggesting 500 cals is ok w/ a mulitvitamin are you?? lmao!

Of course not. I was wondering what the heck does he eat in order to keep it at 500 calories, than I asked if he takes a multi-vitamin. Two separate questions. :D

Leave that poor horse alone :)

You know there have been studies that have suggested that animals that ate less, pretty much like you lived longer lives. Still I think 1200 calories would be lowest I would go.

Just kind of a general addition - 500 calories a day IS dangerous to your health for more than just the malnutrition it promotes.

Your body still needs calories to run. Where do those calories come from when you put yourself into starvation and keep yourself there for any appreciable time (more than a week or so) - the calories come from your lean tissues. Your body, amazing machine that it is, cannibalizes your muscles and organs for what it needs to sustain itself.

It is not unheard of for someone who has gone on a starvation diet and stayed on it it too long to subsequently have heart problems - requiring open heart surgery to replace valves that have been weekend because of the malnutrition. I've also heard of people having serious kidney problems.

This whole thread may have been started by a troll, but there are people out there lurking and thinking - hey, someone is doing it and not getting hurt, so can I.

To those lurkers, I say - read through the site, especially the stickied topics concerning nutrition and metabolism, and take the very excellent advice given to preserve your metabolism and feed your body what it needs. Besides, in general, the more you starve yourself, the more you set yourself up for very rapid weight gain that is harder to loose the 2nd, 3rd and 4th time around.

God Bless,
mik

yes i have only lost 6 lbs so far but i've only been doing this for 4 days so i think thats pretty good. I do know how to loose weight healthy, i have done it before by Weight Watchers which is healthy lifestyle, and kept all of it off until i had my baby in January 2007. so i do know how to loose and keep it off. i know i'mnot sure how many cals i'm getting, but i know its enough for me and i'm doing just fine! thanks for the input though!

Last time I checked I was not a rat.

If you really dont know how many calories you're getting, then I'm not sure what we're discussing. You could be eating 1500 calories and then its no wonder you're doing fairly well. If you're actually getting less than 1000 a day like you said earlier, then I would question how great you'll be doing after a few more days of this.

But dont be a proponent of eating less than 1000 calories per day if you dont even know that's what you're getting. I just like us to be careful on here because I know young kids (teens) read these boards and get ideas from us "smart adults" on what's acceptable for weight loss (hence, NB, why I'm taking the time to "beat a dead horse").

Fat loss always seems to be preceded by extra water loss, so its no surprise that your drastic cut in calories has lead to a large first week loss and I'm happy for you, I know how good that feels.

And there is a whole society of folks that practice Calorie Restriction as a way of life in an effort to extend their lives - they weigh and measure every single morsel and calculate it to the Nth degree. They spend HOURS every single week working out what they will eat, when and how to prepare it so it neither goes above their allotted calories, nor falls below them. Spend a little time at any of the main CR sites, post on their forums and ask this same question about very low calories, and you will find that THEY will blast you for going too low to support your metabolism in a healthy manner.

yeah i guess we should be careful about what we say since there are teens on here. I'm just here for the support that i think we ALL need to keep going or we wouldnt be on here!

Heaven's sake eat something...You will go brain dead as well. You MUST eat. Just stay away from the white stuff (breads, sugar etc., sodas) Eat lots of veggies and a bit of fruit. Whole grains, nuts, soya. You need at least 1200 cal per day, and based on your height and weight, you should be eating min. 2000 just to function, about 1500 per day to lose weight. You also do not want to lose too fast, because then you body will go into starvation mode and store the cals/fat for the next time when you don't eat enough.

[QUOTE=worldcure;369361, there are people in other countries that fast for a month for their religion, so they don't eat for an entire month

hi,i just want you to know that pple fast for a month but from sunrise to sunset they can eat at night... if you quit eating for a whole month you are killing yourself...500 calories is too little i think you should raise it...good luck but dont harm yourself...

i don't think anyone realizes that this lady was just a troll, she was here just to get a rise out of us, not b/c she was actually eating 500 cals a day.
