Less than 500 calories per day, is it okay?

Right, but I explained what thermic effect of energy is.... it's simply the energy expended when you exercise, move, blah blah blah.

I rarely post to the general forum without explaining in laymans.
 
So Steve, wouldn't you say this woman is probably using her 500 cals/day just by being alive, let alone the excersize and such.
 
Your average size female might require something like 1800 calories to maintain her weight, including activity.

About 1200 calories of the total 1800 would be earmarked for basal functions like breathing, cellular processes, organ function, etc, etc.

These are very rough estimates, but you get the idea.

With that said, it should be easy to see how wrong 500 calories per day actually is.

And 1800 calories per day would be the maintenance for a 130ish pound woman.

The bigger the person, the more calories required to maintain.

No, there aren't. Period, end of story, full stop.

I assume you're referring to the monthlong fast at Ramadan? That's a daytime fast - you eat one meal before dawn, and another after sunset. The one study I've seen that looked at calories consumed during Ramadan compared to other times of the year showed about a 20-calorie per day reduction during Ramadan.

Personally, I suspect you of trollishness - or of vastly underestimating your calorie consumption.
 
hey, i'm sure that you wont die by only wating 500 cals a day, like you said i have friends that do the fasting thing and the "only juice diet" as well. I know that i dont eat 1200 a day i eat less and i'm fine. just make sure that you get your protein and vitmains in.... you might want to up it up a littel though, and no 1000 is not a lot its seems a lot but it not! dont worry about it and if you are just ask your doc about it. Not that I'm an advocate of putting nutrition advice in the hands of regular doctors..... I'm pretty sure no doctor in his or her right mind is going to tell her that 500 calories per day is healthy.
 
Maybe I'm crazy, but I do believe that a diet of 500 cals can kill you. Maybe not right away, but eventually....right???

I wouldn't say that much but that really depends on what you're eating. If those 500 calories is comprised solely of essential nutrients, you'd still be malnourished most likely. But you wouldn't die. Shitty health for sure.

But the OP said she eats a bowl of cereal and a frozen lunch out of a box and that's it.

Yea, she's very malnourished.

That's nowhere near essential nutrients.

If you eat a lot less than 1200 calories per day, and you're 49 lbs overweight, according to you, how does that seem "fine"? Shouldn't you be a size zero eating that amount? Or did you just start this calorie level?

I dont mean to be rude but what is your expertise in advising someone else that less than 1000 calories per day is healthy or sufficient.

Most people do not eat 500 calories for the rest of their lives. What do you girls think will happen when you start eating again? Dont you think you're body will be used to a lower calorie amount and as soon as you eat a normal day's calories you'll gain a bunch of the weight right back? There are no short cuts here. Do it healthy and keep it off forever. Do it fast and yo yo back to your starting weight and higher.
