Ideas for August Challenge???

Ok, so I sat down to start a challenge for August...BUT I'm kinda bored with the "10lb challenge" SO I wanna shake it up and do something fun.....do you all agree???

What if we do another challenge where we divide up teams? 6wks long??? Does anyone have any kind of fun ideas?

If you did it in teams, it could be something like which team loses a certain amount of weight first...

and you could make it more fun by instead of just having the weight, have it be an item...like um...

10 lbs = a medium sized bowling ball

etc

and you could have items for say 1-10 lbs inclusive and then perhaps every 5 lbs after that..

just an idea :)

Maybe if we did the teams thing, we could make it that the team to lose the most amount of weight in a month wins.

Oh and moodringgrl, I'm doing the 30 day shred too but I'm only on 1/30 as my legs are constantly reminding me today :)

I really, really like the idea of teams. That way team members can motivate each other while fostering the competitive spirit together. Also, you're more likely to keep on track if you know that your progress reflects not only on you, but your whole team.

Maybe it could also not just be about weight, but fitness minutes, too? As in, a team could win for most weight loss, but another team could win for most minutes spent working out? It's kind of like giving an award for effort and not just outcome.

Hi all, Yes, I'm definately interested in an August challenge, and I love the idea of teams and also the idea of a reward for mins worked out per team, could be great fun! major motivation needed for me, I'm at DAY ONE of a new life style change. all help welcome!

I just got word from our Admin. that WLF will be providing a prize to the winner of the challenge!!!! (that is US, UK,Canaidian and European residents only)

Please start signing up so that I can work on teams!!

Also, I liked the idea of the teams working towards a certain weight loss goal (1st team to lose X amt of pounds wins) What do you guys think is reasonable?? I guess it depends on how many people get signed up???

Sign me up :)
I like JanaNanner's idea of having an exercise aspect to it too as well as weight loss. If that could be incorporated it should be more interesting.

I just noticed that moodringgrl is getting awfully close to the 200 mark. thats awesome. it wont be long now.

Im up for a August challenge. I dont know how i feel about teams though. I really need to get back into the grind again instead of slacking off. all month of july I let so many things slide. really a disappointment for me. I dont want it to happen again. August 1st is on a sunday so that is a perfect time for me to buckle down and start tracking again.

I'm ok with a team thing, prize or not.

Only thing is, things like "most weight lost" either absolute lbs or % kinda go against what we preach around the site here as safe and effective weight loss. For example, I'm only shooting for losing 10lbs a month, and 12-14lbs lost max a month to stay at or under 1% of my weight lost per week. I'm unlikely to be motivated to try to lose more than that, even though I'm sure I could.

For "minutes spent working out", how do you define what counts as time working out? I usually spend ~ an hour in the gym 3 days a week, but a lot of that time is resting in between lifts. I count golfing on tuesdays as my workout for the day because I walk the whole time, but it usually takes over 3 hours, and it wouldn't be as effective as 30-60 minuted of focused exercising. I play DDR for an hour a couple nights a week, I would count that. Is that equivalent to the hour I would count if I went with my wife to take the dog for a walk? Someone could spend 2 hours walking a day, and it would be much less effort than a different person spending 1hr a day running. We also know that time working out does not correlate to more progress if your eating at or above maintenance. So I don't really think that time spent working out is indicative of effort or results.

What I think would be nice and consistent with the knowledge base here (but it will take some coordination) is, the team sets a total goal for team weight loss (based on the individual goal of the team members), and the winning team is that which is closest to its goal. I think losing too much for the sake of a challenge should be discouraged. We all preach around here setting realistic and attainable goals. So the best contest would measure how well we succeed at setting realistic goals, and then meeting them.

Example:

Team A sets a goal to lost 100lbs, loses 90lbs, is off by 10%
Team B sets a goal to lose 75lbs, actually loses 85lbs, is over goal by 13.3%
Team A wins the challenge.

Otherwise, if we all do what we should do, the team that weighs the most should be able to lose the most weight in the recommended way in any given time frame.

Well, Mar1984....Sometimes in life people do things over and over, the same things, just because thats the way its always been done. These challenges, the team challenges, have always been about "who wins the most". But I have to say that I"m impressed that you thought 'outside the box' on this matter. Your absolutely correct. That is not the msg that this forum has been putting out there. It would be almost hypocritical do encourage the opposite.

I would like to accept your way of thinking for this challenge and see how it goes. I could use some continued help with the thinking process here. I know earlier I had thought about how to come up with a goal for each team to reach and I was thinking about finding out how many members are on each team and then encouraging a 2lb a week weight loss. So if 10 people are on a team, their goal over 6 wks could be ..... 10people x 2lbs a week x 6weeks =120 lbs. Maybe we could just ONLY accept a weight loss of 2 or 3 lbs a week and anything over that wouldn't count. That way people are forced to be more consistantly losing 2 or 3lbs a week.

But the problem is, with everything, someone won't be happy. Some people won't understand why they worked hard to lose 5lbs and those other 3lbs won't count. I can see them arguing that....unless everyone agrees upon signing up, THAT is the way it is???

Also, if we do a challenge in this method...how would we determine a winner???? WE also need to find a way to work in the exersize portion into the challenge as well.

So how about this....what if we do it on a points based system.....to help determine a winner in the end. What if everyone gets 1 point for each pound lost and then 1 point for each hour of excersize a week.....so if you lost 2 lbs and then excersized for 3 hrs for the week....you'd get 5 points??? The team with the most points wins...and then there will be an overall winner..whoever has the most points, regardless to whos team your on??

Of course, we might still limit everyone to only 2 or 3 lbs lost a week...no one has said for sure what they think about limiting how much credit you get for your weight loss yet....

I'm listening guys!! Get talking :)

Count me in - I'm up for a challenge and will think about it at the level that just makes me try and lose my regular poundage and keep up the exercise. Other than that, it all gets too detailed about how unfair one way is or another way is on big people...on the little people etc...all I'm interested in is motivating myself and others to "do good" for 6 weeks :D The rest is up to you re the points system! :D If we win, great but for me the WIN will be in the weight loss and the fun along the way :D

It'll be my first challenge too :)

I agree with jjjay that, for me, it's just about being motivated to stay on track so I wouldn't mind the little details too much.

Any which way, I'm in!
