Thought for the Day:
"Today's preparation determines tomorrow's achievement"

Didn't update wednesday and thursday was on the road. Well I'll give you the low down on the regatta.

First of all, rowers in Queensland are ranked into 5 categories, or groups.

G1 - Senior and U23 Australian Representative rowers
G2 - U19 Australian, and all Queensland Representative rowers, also includes the top tier club rowers who do not fall into the other already mentioned categories
G3 - The majority of club rowers, and the top ranked non-Aus rep junior rowers
G4 - The majority of junior rowers and the lower tier of club rowers
G5 - The bottom rung, generally U13, U14 rowers and novice rowers

Individuals acquire points based on their performances of the past 12 months (your ranking is carried through to the next year and it is possible to move up categories during a season).

As I hadn't competed in over 18 months I had a ranking of G5.

Nonetheless I was entered into the G3 Single, the G3 Double and the Championships (G1) Lightweight Mens Double Scull.

I won the G3 double by 15 seconds over the next crew, won a silver in the G3 single losing out by 0.8 of a second (to my doubles partner) and we then combined to win a bronze medal in the Championships Lightweight Double Scull.

A solid result given my lack of training and preparation in the lead up and the uncertain throughout the season. So I'm happy.
I'm not happy with my fitness, it wasn't good enough and I suffered because of it, my race preparation was inadequate as well. I was happy with the way I raced mentally though, controlling my emotions and doing my utmost to ensure that I was responsible for the outcome.
I did enough to move into the G3 rankings but not enough to move into the G2 rankings. Hopefully over the next few months if I train hard and continue to improve I will be able to compete in the NSW State Championships and then the National Titles and move into a G2 ranking.

At the end of the regatta I was not invited to trial for a Queensland Crew.

Well... the journey to the centre of the four has failed. Let us look back on the journey that was...

The Goals
1. To qualify for the Queensland U23 Men's Lightweight Four for the Australian Championships
The reality is that selection this year is extremely unlikely, the real goal is qualifying in 2009 or 2010.
1.5 Nonetheless I want to at least challenge for selection this year.
2. To get my BF% down to 5%.

The Results
1. I failed to qualify.
1.5 For various reasons I failed to challenge for selection as, come the penultimate day of racing (the State Championships), my ranking was too low to contest the necessary events. I doubt I would have succeeded anyway.
2. My BF% was at 8%, I failed to achieve this goal.

3 (2.5) goals, 0 achieved.

But what did I achieve in this journey?

The Achievements
1 State Gold Medal
1 State Silver Medal
1 State Bronze Medal
3 PB 2k Ergo scores
1 PB 6k Ergo score

I become the proud owner of a Sykes Ultimate Mould 20 1x Racing Scull :D

What does the future hold?

I will still attend the Queensland selection trials next week even though I haven't been invited to compete for a spot, however for me and me alone I want to compete against those guys.

Beyond that I will take 2 weeks off over christmas and then come back with a passion. Nationals is in March and the club is sending crews. I want to be there.

Will there be another Journey?

Don't bet against it...

They will let you or you're racing as a bandit or something along those lines?

You're still really young so my advice is to keep your focus on the finish line. You've got what it takes to get there.

I, for one, expect to see another journey thread in 2009!! All the best to you, Sam :)

And you are more than welcome. I did what I did because I saw that you've got what it takes to succeed. I believed in you.

And I believe in you now more than ever ;)
