Journey to the Centre of the Four... (A Rower's Journal)

Here I thought it couldn't get much better re: getting a scull, and then I read the next paragraph about your coach entering you in the time trial?

I'm so stoked for you I want to get into a gymnastics leotard and do one of my old floor routines ... the tumbling would probably kill me :D

But I'd die happy :p

Awesome news, awesome work, just AWESOME, Sam!!!!!

I'm going to celebrate tonight ;)

congrats sam! that's awesome news!

Thursday 13/11/08 - Day 72 (25 Days to Deadline)

No rowing this morning but have coaching. After a really big day yesterday I do plan to do a light gym session in the morning... unfortunately I'm so exhausted after rowing coaching I fall asleep and don't wake up till 9.30... I have to be at work at 10! Bugger. I at least pack my own lunch...

Busy night.

Food: Under, but didn't do anything anyway.
Breakfast:
Bowl of fruit w/yoghurt

Snack 1:
Protein Shake

Lunch: 2xHam, Salami, Tomato, Cheese sandwich on wholemeal bread

Dinner:
Grilled Snapper, greek salad and grilled salmon

Pre-Bed:
Protein Shake

Total:
~1900 calories.

Felt slack. Tomorrow I have rowing again, and work all day. I'll try and squeeze in a gym session before work. Make it a full one and hit all the major muscle groups. Saturday I won't do gym, just ab work and stretching so I'm fresh for the time trial on Sunday.

Thought for the Day:
"I've missed over 9000 shots in my career...
I've lost almost 300 games...
26 times I've been trusted to take the game winning shot... and missed...
I have failed over, and over and over again in my life...

And that is why I succeed." - Michael Jordan

Friday 14/11/08 - Day 73 (24 Days to Deadline)

Rowing this morning. To my immense displeasure (no offence intended) my partner for the pair rocks up for a change. I wanted to row the scull again...
we row 16k, at least we put some pressure on at times but I would much prefer to be in the scull...

I've got work all day today so I head straight to the gym after breaky, don't want to have too much lingering soreness on Sunday so mix it up a bit (the weights)

3x5 Back Squats @130kg
3x5 Bench Press @60kg
3x5 Military Press @40kg
3x5 (each arm) One Arm Rows @30kg
3x5 Pull Ups
3x5 Chin Ups

Just a short session then go to work....

what a day... totally insane. It's ****heads all day and then non-stop at night. I get to leave early (10pm!) becasue im rowing in the morning. Its bull**** though, when i sit down in my car (the first time iv sat down for 12 hours) i feel like i never want to stand up...

Food: did my best
Breakfast:
8 weetbix w/1% milk

Snack 1:
Protein Shake w/1% Milk + honey
50g almonds

Lunch:
2x Cheese, salami + ham sandwiches on wholemeal

Dinner:
Grilled Salmon, greek salad with no dressing, 2 boiled eggs, greek-style octopus (lemon juice, herbs, sun dried tomato etc.)

Pre-Bed
Protein shake w/1% milk + honey

Total Calories ~2900 calories

However, I nibbled on food at work during the day, a little bit of fish here, some calamari there

Final Total: ~3200 calories

Food was alright, not perfect but getting better.
Rowing was better but pretty dodgy. Gym was good
Work was unbelievable. I cant wait to sleep.

Saturday 15/11/08 - Day 74 (21 Days to Deadline - 3 weeks, I had miscalculated the number of days till states, or maybe the number of days iv already done...)

Rowing this morning, we have Australian selectors coming to watch us today (they want to see who they should be paying attention to at the trials tomorrow) but before they get there we start off with some video footage. I'm actually quite suprised by how much better my technique looks compared to when I last saw myself rowing on video...
After that we go out for a row in front of the selectors. I'm not too worried as I know they won't be taking too much interest in me, give it another couple of years.
Whats of more concern to me is that on the way back (we only row 12k this morning) we do some swing throughs at time trial pace in preparation for tomorrow...
I am so much less fit than I thought I was... after two of them (so just 4 mins) im shattered... looks like I won't be doing the TT tomorrow at that pace (the others were rating around 34-35...), probably just sit on around 24-26 with plenty of pressure and do regular pushes. Open it up a bit in the final 1000m.... it's going to be interesting. At least there's no pressure on me from coach or the club to be kicking down the metaphorical selection door this season...

Relax most of the day, sort a few things out re: the scull, amongst other things.

Go to the gym to do some light ab work in the afternoon.

4x12 Weighted Cable Crunches @ 75kg
4x12 Hanging leg Raises
4x12 (each side) Russian Twists @10kg
4x12 Lateral Flexion on Dorsal Raise Machine @15kg

Then just lots of stretching. I don't want to do any heavy weights as I want to feel fresh tomorrow.

Food: had lots of carbs in preparation for tomorrow
Breakfast:
2 weetbix (packet ran out) + 150g Sports Lift Cereal (not ideal I know) w/1% Milk
4 tubs of high fat (and high protein) yoghurt

Snack 1:
Protein Shake w/1% milk+honey

Lunch:
Salmon, greek salad + rocket + pumpkin, fresh tiger prawns

Snack 2 (after gym):

Dinner:
300g Homemade Vegetable Tortellini w/tomato + basil sauce

Pre-Bed:
Protein Shake w/1% Milk + Honey

Really early night (8pm), because I'll need to be up at 3.30am tomorrow to get to the course in time for weigh in (even though I'm well under I still need to weigh in). I'm borrowing a scull from the boys school i coach at for the time trial, its not ideal and its heavy but its a boat (row faster than I can swim!). I can't wait to get my boat, but the bad news is that even if I get it, I may still not be able to train with it until next year. There's no space in the club shed so I may have to store it at one of the schools I coach at till next year when more space should be available (as people's memberships expire).

Actually quite nervous about tomorrow... none of the rest of my crew were invited to the trials, just me and the elite guys... I'm between 2-5 years younger than the other guys in my category and on the basis of today's row... when the elite guys open it up (which they clearly havent done in the previous training sessions I've done with them... when I've fought hard and kept pace with them, they've clearly been, if not cruising then certainly not anywhere near max) I am a long way back.
I just wish there was some other guys around my standard doing the time trial tomorrow so I don't feel hopeless compared to everyone else... hopefully there'll be some from other clubs there...

We'll see...

I'm seeing it differently, Sam. You say none of the rest of your crew were invited to the trials, just you and the elite guys. That speaks volumes about what they think you are capable of doing, perhaps not now, but in the future.

You may feel as though you're a long way back (or as you put it, "hopeless"), but these guys can tell who has it and who doesn't. They know what to look for. Is there a reason you were asked? Yes there is.

As for being less fit than you thought you were, Rome wasn't built in a day. You're so young, Sam. Give your body time to reward you with your hard work. It doesn't happen overnight.

One day you'll get up, go rowing and you'll just "feel it". You'll know you've reached a new level and that's when you'll realize that all your hard work has paid off. And then you reach for a new goal.

Although your TT's have already happened, I do hope you surprised yourself :)

Dutes, you have accomplished so much over the last few weeks. Don't get down on yourself thinking otherwise. You can't keep up with an elite boat...which I assume is an 8 when they are doing near full pressure pieces? I wouldn't expect anyone in a single to be able to keep up. You've been asked to go with the elite squad to an event that no one else that you've been teamed with is going to. THAT is your big accomplishment. It means your coach sees how hard you are working, sees that despite the adversity you have persevered and despite his lack of attention towards you are working just as hard or more likely harder than any of the elite guys he concentrates on.

So kick some butt! You're one of the hardest working people I can say I "know". Keep at it!

Cheers.

Sunday was a big dissapointment...

I approached the time trial the wrong way. I went out with a view to conserving during the first half and really opening up in the 2nd 2k. I had a stroke plan I wanted to maintain.
It didn't happen.

What I hadn't expected was that my crew from last year were all there... and were sent off in the same group as me. I held pace with them through the opening 1000m but they were clearly using a different plan to me as they didnt back off at the 1000m and kept up the pace, I didn't want to be left behind them so I went too, came over the 2000m with them, but then panicking I stuffed up my turn around (its only a 2k course so you row up 2k, then turn around and row 2k back) and was well behind them, I then went out hammer and tongs and was completely shagged 500m into the 2nd leg. It fell apart in the middle 1000m and although I got some semblance of form back for the final 500m I was really dissapointed with myself.
It's a learning experience I suppose and next time I'll just have to do better.
I had work all day after the time trial. I haven't seen the times yet but I'm dissapointed with my performance all the same, I know I can go better.

I weighed in at 68.6kg, the lightest male competitor there and one of the 20 lightest people including the girls... that was embarrassing.

Monday - Coach told us to take the day off, so we did. I relaxed, went to the movies and then had work that night.

Training starts again tomorrow...

I don't know what the real strategy should be, firefreak will because he used to row :)

Sam, don't be disappointed. People learn a lot more from their mistakes than they ever do from winning. This was a good thing for you. I know you don't see it that way right now, but I know you'll take this experience and do what a winner does: apply it to your future TT's and learn from it.

As for your body weight, you're a rower who has to meet a weight class (isn't it 72kg or under?). You should apologize to nobody for your weight, nor should you be embarrassed. Besides, weight is no indicator of rowing prowess/ability. I would think technique is far more important at the level you are rowing. BTW, I'm still waiting to see that pic of 68kg of solid muscle ... :D

Tomorrow is a new day. Embrace it ;)

I was referring to being lighter than the girls as embarrassing, not the guys, I already knew I was lighter.

Firefreak - by the elite guys I mean, the guys who row the clubs Lightweight 1st VIII, however they train almost exclusively in singles, and all sessions I've trained with them they have been in singles. I wouldn't even dream of keeping up with an VIII if I was in a single...

Maureen, I've PM'd you a picture from the weekend as I'm a bit self-conscious about posting myself on the internet

Tuesday 18/11/08 - Day 79 (18 Days to Deadline, pretty sure I messed up the number of days that had passed)

Coaching this morning and my boys have a great session. Head to the gym afterwards, there are issues involving my sponsor, which are a little complicated, the upshot is that atm I don't have access to my fitness coach. With that in mind I have to go back a few steps. In the absence of my fitness coach writing my weights program I'm just going with compound exercises for now... hopefully it'll be sorted soon.

1x5 Squats @ 140kg, when I start the second set I feel a painful twinge in my groin. I stop there as I knowI shouldn't be feeling that. I've torn my groin once when I was 14 playing soccer and I'm very cautious about doing a similiar injury again, it was exceedingly painful.

3x5 Bench Press @65kg
3x5 Deadlift @90kg
6x12 Weighted Cable Crunch @75kg
6x12 Hanging Leg Raises

I go for a 3k run in the afternoon through the pouring rain. Love it :)

In the afternoon I find out I've received the time trial results so I sit down to analyse them...

I'm ranked 78 out of 88 entries in the time trial. Better result than I thought, I was sure I was going to come in last, especially after the way I rowed...
My weight was 68.6kg
My first leg time was 8:16.71
My second leg time was 9:32.88
My total Time was 17:49.59
My prognostic was 72.38%

1% Prognostic = 14.78seconds

The next worst prognostic from one the club's elite lighty boys was 79.49%.
Now I know I rowed like crap on Sunday and haven't done nearly as much hard training in the boat or as much fitness work as those guys but thats still 1:45.07 I would need to make up on him to catch up.

I reckon rowing a proper boat (as opposed to a training scull that I had to borrow) I could knock 20-25 second off easily.
I think a few more practices and a bit more experience and I could knock another 20 seconds off.
Heavy fitness work (although too late to make a difference this season) could probably knock another 30 seconds off.
Weight gain of 4.3kg (the difference in weight between me and that next rower) of lean muscle would probably see me strong enough to knock another 20 seconds off.

I can therefore see 1min 30-35 seconds being knocked off my time with some more experience, a better boat, some more fitness work and putting on more lean muscle mass. That would still leave me 10-15 seconds to cover to get me to a 79.49% prog. More technique work could probably do that too.

Although I am a long way back I don't feel that it's insurmountable. Maybe it isn't doable this season but there's 12 months till state 2009 and I think I could definitely bring myself to an 80% prog by then, if I work hard enough.

So although the performance was dissapointing, and the results leave me well down the field, I do feel rather encouraged actually.

Another thing that was pleasing was to see that one of the girls I coached during the girls season entered the time trial, although her time was nearly 2mins slower than mine as a junior women's category she actually got a better prognostic than me, maybe I'm a better coach than rower ;)

Food:
Breakfast:
Egg and cheese on wholemeal bread
Bowl of fruit w/mango yoghurt

Lunch:
2xCheese, Ham + Salami sandwich on wholemeal

Snack 1:
Protein Bar + 250ml 1% Milk

Dinner:
Chicken stir-fry w/noodles

Pre-Bed
Protein Shake w/1% Milk.

Total Calories: ~2200, well down. Today was difficult because I slept for nearly 5 hours during the day so missed meals.

Tomorrow I go down to Melbourne to buy the scull. I have rowing in the morning and I'll try and slip in a gym session before my flight leaves.

Thought for the Day:
I won't let myself end where it started, I won't let myself finish where it began. I know what is within me, even if you can't see it yet.
I have something more important than courage. I have patience.

I will become what I know I am."

Better get to eating A LOT more if you want to put on that much lean muscle mass. :)

Get eatin!:food::food::costumed5::costumed5::cook::cook:

Back from Melbourne, I'll give a brief rundown of the last 48 hours rather than two full blown logs.

Wednesday morning had rowing, was in the pair with my pain-in-the-ass partner. At least this morning he conceded (for the first time ever!) that he isn't that hot in the pair. Really? I would never have guessed.
Nah, he's a nice guy really but has a bit of a tendency to both talk himself up and be a backseat driver (he tries to coach you while your both in the boat... one of the most frustrating things anyone can do).
We had to row Square Blades for 11km of a 16km row. God it was awful, better than last time but still awful.

Afterwards coach informed me (but not my partner or the rest of our crew who he didn't even talk to) that he wasnt going to enter me in the regatta on the weekend. Bugger, at least he gave me the courtesy of telling me personally unlike the other times (and what he did with the rest of the crew) in just not saying anything at all.

Didn't have time for a gym session but flew in to Melbourne by lunch time and was at the school ready to test out the boat by 6pm...

and my god was it worth the trip...

What a beautiful boat! Not much to look at but the moment I took that first stroke I was in love. It's as light as feather and just glides across the water. I gave it some into the head wind and it scythes through the incoming wind and against the current so easily. With the wind the bow lifts up slightly and you actually get onto the plane at race pace.
I'm in love. It's soooo much better than I was expecting. Its even better than the boat I was looking at buying brand new for near double the price!

I nearly snapped his hand off.

I'll mail him a cheque and we'll have the boat brought up not this weekend but the following one.

Also, the guy who was selling it is a very well known and respected coach, and the coach of the First VIII of one of Australia's premiere rowing schools. The first thing he said when I got back to the bank after taking it for a test row was
'Sh1t... you can row!'

A good feeling

Thursday was a non-event. Didn't get home till 5pm and then headed straight to the gym

3x5 Bench Press @65kg
4x5 (each arm) One Arm Bent Over Rows @30kg
4x5 Lat Pull Down (2 pull up grip, 2 chin up grip) @65kg
3x5 Seated Overhead Press @35kg
The squat machine was being used the whole damn time I was there so I had to make do with the Leg Press (did not feel like a proper workout AT ALL)
4x10 Leg Press @200kg (this just seems ridiculous, I can leg press near double what I can squat????? just goes to show that its easy to get the wrong idea of how strong you are when using machines)
6x24 Russian Twist w/10kg Med/Ball
6x12 Lateral Flexion With 20kg Weight

At plenty both days, notes for Wednesday say 3700, 3500 for Thursday.

Very, very happy to have my boat. Not rowing in the morning though, Brisbane is experiencing what they're calling the worst storms since '74 (when half of Brisbane was flooded) and it might be too dangerous. They've already stopped running the city ferries and closed a number of freeways...
Instead coach has emailed everyone to let us know that we're doing an ergo session instead...

Oh f.uck... oh f.uck... oh f.uck :speechless::bncry:

Thought for the Day:
"Think of aerobics plus weight lifting minus the music or camaraderie. Combine unalloyed endurance with straightforward strength and demand poise, timing, and practiced form as well. Think of pure pain: that's the ergometer."

Glad to hear the scull is a beaut :)

Now that you've got that baby to row in, I can see things coming together for you. Also, I'm stoked that the guy who was selling the scull said "Sh1t... You can row!"

Hey, we all knew Sam could row ... and then some ;)

I'm just tossing this out into thin air, so don't consider this to be prescience by any means, but would you ever consider moving to Melbourne to be coached by this dude?

In a word... no.
There's so many reasons why I wouldn't move to Melbourne but the key ones are
My current accommodation I am renting on the cheap from my parents, I would be paying 2-3 times my current rent in Melbourne.
I have arguably the best lightweight coach in Queensland at the moment
I hate the weather in Melbourne (I grew up living on the Tropic of Capricorn. Cold, windy, rainy, Melbourne is not for me.
Jeff (the guy who sold me the boat) coaches Schoolboys only.
My university grades might not be good enough to allow me to transfer into the same degree at a Melbourne university.

There are other reasons as well but I just don't see myself in Melbourne.
Ergo training this morning was hell... at least it was short!

I think the first few reasons were good enough ;)

You've got a good head on your shoulders, Sam.

Friday was a poor day, we did 6 1' on 1' off pieces on the ergo and that was it.
Had work all day so diet was poor. This is one of my major challenges, overcoming my hours and the structure of my work to accommodate my necessary diet.

Fell well under calorie count.

Saturday, with the elite guys at the regatta and the river too dangerous to row on I got to sleep in.
Ran necessary errands I'd been putting off for too long and hten went to the gym in the afternoon.

4x10 S/B Kneeling Cable Single Arm Row @30kg
4x10 Squats standing on medicine balls
4x10 (2each arm) M/B - push up, position. Single Trap Pull through on Cable @25kg
4x10 Single Arm trap raise on opposite leg @8kg
5 x (each side) 10kg M/B Single Side raise to standing
2x10 Bosu + Disc lunge with D/B and Press @16kg
2x10 M/B on S/B push ups
Sitting on Swiss ball on Bosu for 10 seconds (got to 9 seconds!!!!!! then i panicked and lost it. Couldn't get there again though...)
3x10 Standing Squats on M/B
3x10 Close-Stance High Bar Squats @60kg (first time i've done them)
1x10 Front Squats (just technique practice)
1x10 Standing Military Press @30kg
1x5 Deadlift @120kg
4x12 Weighted Crunches

Looks a lot but I was out in just over an hour, including warm up and stretching.

Slept in and missed two meals I would normally have, ended up with 2600 calories for the day....

Monday 24/11/08 - Day 85 (12!!! Days to Deadline)

No rowing this morning as the rest of the squad were given a day off to recover from the regatta, as a result the shed was locked so no rowing for me.

So I got to sleep in.

Went to the gym and rather than a standard weights day I decided to do some strength training on the ergo

Heavy Tens
45" 'on' (Rate 14, maximum pressure, resistance at max, use watts as a guide to stroke quality)
90" 'off' (low rate, no pressure)
X10

Then just some core work

4x10 Dumbbell Pull-Ins @20kg
1x20 S/B Alternating Step Offs
6x12 Weighted Crunches @12.5kg
6x24 Weighted Russian Twists @10kg
4x12 (each side) Lateral Flexions @15kg
4x12 Hanging Leg Raises

Food:
Breakfast:
8 Weetbix w/1% Milk

Snack 1:
Protein Shake w/1% Milk

Lunch:
2x Chicken, Cheese and Lettuce Sandwiches on wholemeal

Snack 2: Bowl of Peanuts + Orange

Dinner:
Whole Wheat Pasta w/tomato and basil sauce and beef mince

Pre-Bed:
Protein Shake

Total Calories: ~3200, so pretty good
Weighed in today at 69kg, representing a gain of 400g in 2 weeks (approx .9lbs so just under half a pound a week).

Thought for the Day:
"Success is not permanent. The same is also true of failure."

Big news from this morning.

I am going to States!

Probably just row the single and a double with my partner for the pair, but possibly row in one of the Elite Four's (probably the Elite 2nd IV) if they need someone to take weight for them.

That means the next two weeks will see a drop off in weights work and an increase in cardio and power work, I am currently WAY not fit enough for racing so I have eleven days to get into shape. Game on!

Edit: I can currently run 5k in 24:08 (roughly 7:43 min/mile), and can do 6:37 for 2k on the ergo. What would be my best method of getting fit enough and race ready in time? Ergo strength work, core training + SS Cardio one day followed by Interval training the next day, training every day until states (except the day before)? Or incorporating some kind of weight training..? Any suggestions?
