Jack's Diary

Beautiful pics Jack . Good luck with the surgery. Hope it goes really well .

I remember you debating about retiring . Good you have a choice

Thanks for the pics, Jack. They are beautiful!
I'm glad they have found out what the problem is with your knee & you are scheduled to have it fixed. It will also be good to have less pressure with your colleague returning to work. Having the option to be able to retire next year if you want to is also a good thing. Something tells me you won't though, but having options is good.

Hey Jack, Petal's post reminded me that we have not heard from you in a while. I also hope your surgery went well, let us know. Your update posts are always quite informative and interesting.

Hey Petal and Rob,

Thanks for checking in! Rob, I see you're down to 156, good Lord! I haven't seen that since I was in college.

Yes, the surgery went well, very well I think. The knees still a bit stiff but I feel like that biting, stabbing sensation has kind of backed off significantly. We'll see if it lasts, but the doctor showed me some photos from the surgery, and one area was kind of beat up, which he said was the load-bearing area I got the injury. Anyway, I think it went well and am very happy about it. It's been a while that I felt this hopeful.

Other than that, not too much. Actually, this lady I had a problem with at work (I ended up doing all a lot her work for her) just quit, and the guy in charge of the programming group put out a post saying they were looking to replace her. I brought it up with P today, about her quitting, and he immediately asked if I was interested, and I said I wasn't sure. He offered to drop a hint to the programming manager, but I said to hold off, I needed to think about it.

The truth is I am thinking about getting back into programming, and if they wanted me, this would be a nice opportunity. Once they hire you, they really don't lay off, so that would really be it for me. A nice job for a couple more years with nice benefits, I already know everyone, none of the interview grind. But it is stressful - that part wouldn't stop.

So, I dunno. I'm curious if they're interested, though.

Oh, good! about the surgery going well. :) Take time to properly recover, though - maybe not a good time to be getting into more high-stress work?

Thanks, Cate, Aiminglow. I feel like the recovery on the knee is coming along, although it will be about a year before it has fully come back to whatever state it's going to end up in. I just finished up PT - 6 or 7 sessions. At $60 / session, I'll take it over on my own for now.
Anyway, it's Saturday, so that's good.

I'm going to try to get to the doctor's today to get them to authorize a visit to the orthopedist regarding the shoulder. I need to get an x-ray/mri and find out what's wrong - it's some kind of rotator-cuff thing, or in that area anyway.

I spent the evening getting my habits/todo app back on the cloud. It took longer than expected because I was missing a compilation error, so I was loading old code without realizing it. But it's good to go now, and I'm planning on using it daily, get those habits going (especially mediation and guitar).

I've given up sweets maybe a couple of months now, with the exception of cough drops and the other day having a couple of pieces of a kind of sponge-cake my mechanics gave to me (which he had just ordered from the local restaurant). My scale is broken, but I feel like I'm probably around 165-167. I might lose a bit more once I'm able to walk the beach as far as I did pre-surgery. But kicking the sweets has definitely helped keep the weight in place.

Finally, due to my doubts about the social security system's solvency going forward, I decided I better put in for the job that had come up at work, and sure enough, they came through with an offer this week. It's nice they did that because honestly, I wasn't sure they would be interested. But it's a fair salary and they do have good benefits, so I'm going to accept it next week and start Dec 28. I'm a bit nervous because everyone in that group is so smart, but clearly, they think I can handle it. It will be nice to get back into programming again. I figure a couple of years should be enough to create a big enough cushion to retire, regardless of social security.

The other thing about work it is does give you a structure to your day, also I enjoy programming. So it's not awful or anything.

Having a job you enjoy is definitely better than financial worries. Also: there´s a whole bunch of us going various degrees of sugarfree right now in case you´re interested in sharing your experiences. You´re a couple of months ahead of the rest :)

Hi Jack, that's really smart making sure you can retire well even without social security, We need to have a plan like that, too. Ours might be renting out part of our house or moving somewhere less expensive. I hope you're not in pain from the knee and shoulder problems. So glad you have a good physical therapist! Wonderful about going sugar-free. When I was on the forums last, I remember you stealthily going out to buy sugary treats. That's a wonderful accomplishment!!

Hi, Jack. It's good to hear you are doing so well. Going sugar-free is a big one. Well done :)
