Jack's Diary

Hey Jack, great yard pictures. You have a nice place!

It is interesting I have been reading through your diary and it has given me a few insights into my own situation. I have always thought of you as being in the ideal place, good weight and fit. Now that I am getting closer to you, not to infer that I am as slim or fit as you, but getting closer. I can see some interesting parallels. You are at or near the weight I had been hoping to reach and you still struggle with a bit of belly fat and wanting to do more. Kind of the same as I am feeling now, except that you are slimmer and fitter than I. Anyway I appreciate being able to follow your role model.

Your 100 pushups a day is very impressive to me. I just started trying pushups about a month ago, could not do a single one. So I started with doing them on my knees, and it was even hard to do one that way. Now I am up to 30 of the on knee pushups and doing a few regular ones. Your 100 a day is a good inspiration to me to keep after it! Have also been doing the occasional crunch, at your suggestion.

Hi Rob - I've absolutely flopped on the 100 pushups and crunches - I couldn't keep that up. But yesterday I did 20 of each to get back into the routine. I was doing 100 pushups for quite a while last year, but for me, I don't think it's tenable overall.

I actually consider you a role model. Your consistency in your approach to weight loss has been absolutely remarkable. Also, you're accomplished in other areas of life that I couldn't touch. Well, I guess everyone has their own strong points. As Brad Steven's, coach of the Celtics says, "Be your best self".

What a relief that you weren't passing on computer viruses, via your new app, Jack.
Your side yard is very pretty & I also love your side fence.

Thanks, Cate. Yes, it was a huge relief. I don't understand how the virus disappeared as soon as it came, but that was about 4 hours of (unbillable) work. I will have to make that a point when negotiating my next contract, if it comes to that.

What gorgeous flowering trees! And the colour in the garden below - so much telling of Spring! :)

Thanks, Amy. I love that tree in the side-yard - I as actually going to post a full on pic of it, but it was too big. I think I should reduce the size of my pics, there are a couple of lower data points I could use when sending.

Jack, the photo of the garden is just lovely. I love tulips. My compliments to your wife.
I'm really glad you didn't end up having a computer virus issue.
I hope that you and your family are staying well. xoxo

Hey Mols!

Great to hear from you and I hope you're safe, healthy and virus-free (in all senses).

My sister has been learning ukelele and I just picked one up yesterday, so we could play together (eventually). It's a blast - so carefree and light. I've been playing "somewhere over the rainbow" - it better on ukelele than acoustic for some reason.

Hi, Jack. We bought our 2 younger grandkids ukuleles & haven't seen them yet to give them to them. I think I would like to learn to play. They are a fun sound. I have never learned to play any musical instrument at all & thought I might have a go. I have no idea!

Hey Jack, its been a while since you posted an update, hope all is well with you.

I like ukuleles but don't play anything myself, except the radio. Makes me think of Tiny Tim.

Hi Cate - I know my sister had a rough go of it at first because it hurts your fingers until they get callouses. I googled how to help, and one thing she definitely used was actually wearing a glove until she got through that phase. I'm very pleased and kind of shocked she's actually stuck with it, even if she is retired. She has a lovely voice, but struggles with singing and strumming along with anything other than downstrokes only at the same time, which is very familiar to me from say 10 years ago or so when I finally got the timing down for "Every Rose has it's Thorn." So, it's a lot of work, but still easier than guitar and maybe a better intro instrument.

I've taken a bit of a break from posting recently, but I'm happy to report my weight is 167 as of this morning, which is good because I haven't been getting much walking in due to a cranky knee, so I'm hanging in there.

I remember Tiny Tim from Laugh-in very well, but here's a video you may be familiar with for a song that I most associate with ukelele nowadays - "Somewhere over the Rainbow" by the late Isreal "IZ" Kamakawiwo'le:

I'm delighted that you and your sis are playing ukelele together. Warms my heart. Especially over the rainbow.
Neat trick, wearing gloves til you build up callouses. It's always a challenge when you are learning and your fingers hurt.
167 is OK, you always manage to keep an eye on things and stay within a small range of your low weight. That kind of discipline is a good example for me! Miss ya buddy, good to be able to read your posts again.

Jack thanks for that . I loved it . Had heard of but never saw it . I shed a few tears there at the end of it . Beautiful

Hi Petal,

Now that I think of it, I had never heard that version either when I first came across it on YouTube. I was pretty surprised because I was expecting a more Judy Garland like version. I tried to play it on guitar at the time, but it found it difficult. I can do it now, but the uke version is just what I have in my mind as the model.

Good morning Jack. How you be? It's been 2 weeks, how about a check-in?
