Geovicsha's Weightloss Diary

INTRODUCTION

First, a little bit about myself. My name is Shannon, male and from Australia. I'm 18 years old (19 in 2 weeks) and after being overweight for all my life, my New Years Resolution has been to lose weight and get fit. I've tried many times before to lose weight and ultimately failed, and I've found that the success to this is motivation, honestly and originality.

During the University holidays I live with my father, who I envy greatly due to his fast metabolism and ability to eat anything and stay thin. He often feeds me things that are high in carbs and fat such as sausages, white rice and spaghetti. Previous weight loss attempts have failed due to not informing him of my plans, reasons behind this is simply sheer embarrassment.

During the University year I am living with two roommates, one of them shares the same motivation to eat healthy. Cooking my own foods which don't intrude into my dad's lifestyle will work out much better for both he and I in the long run.

I am currently 92kg and 175cm.

I have not set a designated weight goal, but I plan to lose currently 10-15kg and get to a nice weight of 65kg-70kg.

My mother passed away when I was 12 in 2001 from lung cancer. Although she wasn't overweight, all of her family's side have had heart problems which have ultimately led to their death:
-Her father/my grandfather died in 1988 from heart disease
-Her mother/my grandmother died in 1995 from a similar heart condition
-Her younger brother/my uncle died in 2006 at the age of 53 from the same heart problems.
-Throughout the 90's she had many problems.

I want to lose the weight to give me a better chance at a healthier life and to feel more confident.

Let the New Years Resolution be a success. :)

Waking up at 1.00pm is never a good thing; both for eating habits and wasting the day. Unfortunately during the holidays I've entered a routine of going to bed at 3am-5am and waking up from 11am-1pm. Rather than dwelling on it, I tried to make the most of the day.

For breakfast (a late one :p) I had my usual Uncle Toby's Whole Oats/oatmeal with cut up apple in it. I microwaved the oats a bit long today so they became cloggy, yet still nice. No sugar or anything else added. The oat's were 1/3rd cup into a bowl and 2/3rd's of water.

Lunch consisted of a carrot sandwich. Whole grain bread and a glass of water. Very nice indeed.

I decided to book the appointment to visit my doctor for a medical opinion, the family doctor I haven't seen for four years as he's usually booked months ahead. I was lucky this time to only wait two weeks. :)

Before dinner I had some servings of apples and more water.

I then went for my power walk around town, boosting my heart rate (especially in the middle I peaked and even did some jogging) and I broke a sweat and got very puffed. No pain, no gain I say!

I returned home, did some stretches and then 40 or so crunches. Dad had made dinner, salad with left over chicken stirfy (white rice). The white rice once again didn't please me, and dad said he had crab meat for me instead. Hearing that seafood is always lean meat and good for you when it comes to protein, I had some with my salad and loved it, although this was a small quantum. Until last year, I DESPISED sea food.

Afterwards I went on the internet to research crab meat, only to learn that it can be bad for you and is high in sodium which worried me (can someone reassure me on this?)

I also decided to go on eBay to purchase a pedometer if I am to continue my power walking and get more accurate readings. :)

Now it is 10.17pm and I might play World Of Warcraft for awhile.

Any comments, advice or constructive criticisms would be fantastic. :)

Cheers,
Shannon

I don't think I'm eating enough as apples are only 80cal, thus I might be going into starvation mode. Tomorrow I shall start recording calories, 2000 day ought to do it.

Breakfast
Uncle Toby's Oats Serving - 130 cal
Apple - 80 cal
Water
Total: 210 cal

Lunch
Whole grain bread and carrot - 250 cal
Total: 250 cal

Snacks
Banana x 2 - 276 cal
Strawberries x 5 - 225 cal
Total: 501 cal

Dinner
Salad (cucumber, lettuce, onion) - 200 cal
Crab meat - 250 cal
Total: 450 cal

Grand total: 1411 cal

How's that going for me? Is that too much carb's? I bought non-fat milk today too and am about to have a glass. Apparently it helps digest fat quicker?

Hi!
First of all welcome to the forum!

I think you're not that fat for a man. I mean, you're 1.77m x 80 kg, right? That's not fat at all. Your bmi is 25.5 which is perfct.I think that maybe you see yourself out of shape and a little sport could help with that.
Anywho, if you want to lose some weight follow a balanced diet and don't forget to talk to your doctor about it. He will know what's best for you.

I've noticed that you do have a very low calorie intake. Being a male you shouldn't get under 1800 cals a day. Starvation mode is a very bad place to be. Trust me, been there done that.

If you need anything, I'll be glad to be of help.

Good luck!

:waving: Hi and welcome to your journal!

:iagree:that you actually are not fat at all! At nearly 6 feet, being 176 pounds (OMG! That is how much I WEIGH - AND I AM ONLY 5'4":svengo:) is not at all unreasonable!

That being said, I sure do know what it's like to not be content with the way you look in the mirror, or fit your clothes. Do some research on this site. It is fantastic for encouragement, info, and great advice! There are lots of fellows on here who could advise you well (hmmm...Steve comes to mind).

Best wishes on your journey! You are just the right age to begin making wise choices for your own health.

I haven't had a proper weigh in for ages as my scales are highly inaccurate so I was simply guessing. I could be 90-100kg for all I know, I bought scales on eBay which should be here on Monday. I'll let you all know then.

Thanks guys :).

I'll try to improve my calorie intake, but there really isn't much heatlthy variety in this house.

Diet

I ate more than I did yesterday, and originally I thought I'd go over the 2000 cal mark and started feeling guilty around dinner times. This seems not to be the case. I'm calculating the calories either by the packaging or FitDay; do they seem to be accurate to you all? Remember guys, I'm just a newbie when it comes to the calorie counting and intake! Is the egg too much or the wholegrain bread? If boiled eggs are indeed 200 calories, I can still have one to make it to 1723 calories.

I'm considering purchasing some protein shakes but I'm not sure where to get them exactly.

Breakfast
Oat meal - 130 cals
1/2 glass of non-fat milk - 39 cals
One banana - 138 cals
Total: 307 cals

Snacks
One apple - 74 cals
4 Strawberries - 180 cals
Total: 254 cals

Lunch
Two lettuce sandwiches, wholegrain bread - 265 cals
Total: 265 cals

Dinner
Two slices of wholegrain bread - 130 cals
Lettuce - 12 cals
One boiled egg, no yolk - 200 cals
Tomato - 35 cals
Onion - 20 cals
Crabmeat - 300 cals
Total: 697 cals

Grand total: 1523 cals

Any recommendations or alterations on my diet would be greatly appreciated.

Exercise

Did about a 5km/3.10 miles power walk today which lasted about 50 minutes. It's been about 45c/113f on average all day today in my town in Australia, so I broke a sweat quite easily; especially as I sped up. The embarrassing thing is it resulted in a couple of flies. Until my pedometer is sent it's hard to see accurate results on how many steps and calories burnt, hopefully it's here Monday!

When I'm going back to University I am going to a gym for the first time in my life, that should be interesting to say the least.

Cheers guys.

Hi There
Stay strong and you will not fall off the wagon, you are going really well, and I notice you are a fellow Aussie, we Aussies don't give up, Qld here where are you located?

Hey welcome aboard. You really sound like your doing things the right way this time. 2,000 calories is a great starting point too.

Thanks Cannon, I'm trying to slowly build it up to 2000 cal rather than instantly. I might aim for 1700-1800 tomorrow.

Gotta eat more to lose more I guess?

Tomorrow is Saturday, usually drinking night. Might remain sober, or just have a couple low carb beers.

I'm way off with my conversion from metres to feet (for the Imperial users).

I measured myself and I am 174cm which is equivalent to 5'7"ft. A bit off from 5'11"ft.

My waist is 113cm or 44.49 inches.

Hi! I'm glad you're increasing your calorie intake. Have you tried calculating your bmr?

And I agree with what was said a few posts ago, when in doubt ask Steve. :D
