G8r80's training / dieting / cycling / log

there is time to register, it is next Friday night and it is gunna be fun!
Carolyn will be volunteering. This is your chance to have my wife 'serve' you~!

Beach Running, Trail Running, Crawling, Jumping, Stream Crossing, & a Sunset - all within Tampa City limits.

The trail and beach run will be approx. 3.3 miles of joy. There will be a number of challenges along the way to slow you down and wear you out. The gorgeous course will make you feel like you have left Tampa Bay and have landed on an island - Picnic Island.

After the race will be a great post-race feast by Affordable Catering with watermelon, pasta salad, hotdogs, ice-cream and much more. We have a DJ playing your favorite tunes while you run and enjoy the sunset.

Hey FF,

My wife's trainer asked me if I was gonna do this, but I will be out of town (Austin, TX) until next Saturday. Otherwise, I would have been in! Sounds like fun. If you meet Valerie, a YMCA trainer in Brandon, tell her I said hello.

Went on first group ride today. 49 miles, averaging just under 19 mph. This was a tough ride and I had trouble keeping up with this group that I had "outgrown" by the end of last year. My strength, speed and endurance are definitely off from before, but I have enough for a sprint tri now.

Hey FF,

I can't make the May 30 event, but they have one on June 27 and July 25. I am available for both. Were you gonna do the June 27 one? It is 2 days before my sprint tri so should be a good warmup.

Here is how I compare now to 2 years ago, June '06 in ():

Height: 5' 11.5"
Weight: 197 lbs (217)
Chest: 44" flexed (42)
Waist: 37" (around the belly button) (42)
Thighs: 22.25"
Calf: 15"
Arm: 14" (13)
Neck: 17" (17)
BP: 110/65 (120/85)
Resting Heart Rate: 51 (74)

As for performance, my run times, bike times, swim times, pushups, pullups, dips, and weight lifting are all vastly improved.

So, overall these last two years have been good, despite a couple of cardiac procedures, but, I still have a ways to go...

Last night ran 1.5 miles in 14:40, just under 10min mile. I set out to do 3 miles, and body felt okay, but it was late and I was tired.

Today did 1 hour Yoga class and swam 800 yards, avg. 2:20/100yds with pull buoy.

Now that my 7-week vacation is over, I have to start traveling again to pay my bills. I am in Austin, TX, this week.

Yesterday and today were long lecture days. After class, I did 45 minutes on the stationary bike and 500 yards in pool

Thanks Katie. I am making progress, but I am now realizing how much the surgery affected me. My progress is way off from before my surgery.

Thursday: 45 minutes on stationary bike

Friday, Saturday: nada

Sunday: Ran / walk for 45 minutes. Just couldn't go more than about 1/2 mile without heartrate getting up there in the high 140s or low 150s causing me to get winded and have to stop and catch breath. While I have minimal adverse effects from the surgery, I have to attribute part of my current lack of speed and endurance to the surgery and the rest to the inactivity before and after surgery.

Then rode stationary bike for 2 hours.

After a hard day at work:

Swam: 440 continuous yards in hotel pool. Back and forth, back and forth...

Ran: 2.9 continuous miles in 30:17, 10.43 min. miles. Slow, but I worked hard. Avg. heart rate: 144, max = 164 which is over 85% of my theoretical max.

Don't worry so much about comparing yourself to the pre-op you. I think you need to stay in the moment to stay motivated. After your surgery call that day 1 and anything improved upon that day is progress.

Thanks Sparrow. Being an eternal optimist, I am fine with the idea that my body is off and will take some time to rebound. That certainly beats the alternative! I was hoping to get the benefit of my surgery-remedied heart for my sprint triathlon on June 28 but realistically the 440 yard swim is gonna take 14 minutes, the 10 mile bike 35 minutes, and the 5K run will take 33 minutes. I hope to place well in the 45 - 50 male open heart surgery category!

Rode the stationary bike 50 minutes and swam 440 yards. It's been raining cats and dogs for days here in Champaign, IL.

Today, set out to run 3 miles but after 2 miles my legs started hurting and I had to walk the last mile. Swam 440 yards.

Did backwards sprint brick. Ran 3 miles in 30:32 (including several stops at red lights). Avg HR: 143, max: 168. Then did 45 minutes on stationary bike, avg. hr: 130. Calves started cramping.

Thanks fit4life!

Today, weighed in at 195.5 which is another 16 year low! I was gonna ride the 52 miles with my riding buddy Glenn (Flyinfree is another riding buddy), but didn't feel like getting out of bed at 6:30am so I went back to bed. I can't remember the last time I did that, but I have higher training priorities than cycling right now (swimming and running come to mind).

Rode mountain bike 4 miles to the gym (saved a little gas and burned a few cals:

Bench press: 119x10x2, 139x10, 139x4, 139x3. Triceps and pecs are still way off from pre-surgery numbers.

Barbell bicep curl: 45x10, 50x10x4. This is within 10 # of my pre-surgery numbers, so I was pleased.

Deadlift: 190x10x2, 240x10x1, 290x10x2. I felt strong on this today. These may exceed my pre-surgery numbers!:)

Barbell shrugs: 190x10x3

Swam 500 yards. It was tough swimming when my arms were fatigued.

Walked/ran 1.5 miles with wife and walked 1.5 miles with dog.

22 days to first sprint triathlon - Rochesterfest (MN) Triathlon on June 29! Also, the YMCA is having an "Ironman Triathlon" competition that begins on June 29. You have to run (treadmill, road, elliptical, stairclimber) 26.2 miles, swim 2.5 miles (should have been 2.4 miles) in any pool or open water, and bike 112 miles on the road, mountain, or stationary bike. This is on your honor. I will be out of town but hope to finish this within a week. The run will be hardest for me to complete in that time.

Thanks, Drex.

Yesterday ran 3.2 miles. The outbound 1.6 miles were tough and my body kept wanting to stop and walk. On the return, I was able to do that with fewer stops. Total time: 38 minutes.

I am in Anchorage, Alaska, and the day length and time zones are driving me crazy. It is bright light outside at 10pm - 11pm when I try to go to sleep! But, I get up early.

Ran 1.2 miles in 15 minutes. Legs ached! Rode bike to my training class, 2.5 miles each way. After class, rode about 24 miles in a little under 1.5 hours. It was really, really cold and surprisingly hilly.
