G8r80's training / dieting / cycling / log

Wow, I did a metric century ride this past summer. It was a lot of fun. But, we didn't ride hard and stopped every 10-12 miles. I would like to do an actual century this year but I'll have to continue to lose weight and bike, bike, bike. The furthest I had ridden before the ride was around 26 miles continuously. However, I made it with a little quad cramping on and off.

Greg, I have posted a century training guide on my web page that you can download,

Hey FF, is that you???

Today, I went to the gym.

Deadlift: 225 x 10 x 3
Barbell curl: 65? x 10 x 3
Dips: 10 x 3
Shrugs: 50 x 10, 55 x 10, 60 x 10, 55 x 10, 50 x 10
Cable pulls: 10 x 3
Easy 1/2 hour on stationary bike, level 14/20 (heartrate 115 - 125)
Tried to run on treadmill but couldn't get motivated and it's too cold here in Charlotte to run outside (30F).

Did a backwards brick today. Ran 5K on treadmill, starting off real slow because my back was sore from the deadlifts yesterday but finished strong, doing last mile in 8:30 for a final time of a whisker under 30min. Then with less than a minute break, to simulate a triathlon transition, went 30 minutes on stationary bike under a moderate-heavy pace.

Wow! I'm really impressed. I used to love to bike when I lived in northern Indiana and there was nothing but country on all sides. I would just take my bike and go in one direction for about ten miles and then turn around and come back. It was fun because it was scenic and there were lots of hills to go up and down. Anyway I moved to the south side of Indianapolis where the neighborhoods aren't so great and the freedom just isn't there anymore. My bike is getting dusty :(.

I was real busy yesterday and only had a chance to do a 1-mile run in the morning.

Today, I had more time, so I swam 5x200m then went in the gym:

Deadlift: 225# 3x10
Bench: 155# 3x5
Barbell curls: 55#x10, 65#x10, 75#x10, 65#x10, 55#x10
Dips: 5x10 (well, actually 9 on the last set)
Lat pulldowns: 3x10
Shrugs: 50#x10, 55#x3, 60#x3, 55#x3, 50#x3
Parallel bar pullups: 5

I think the deadlift really helps with back issues while cycling. I'll know more tomorrow.

oh geepers, and I voted against you,- i did it beacuse i cared.

I am over that now ;)

ahhaa

Rode 42 miles today averaging a brisk 20.2 mph. On three occasions, it seemed like I was going pretty fast, looked at the speedo and I was going over 30 mph and we were on a flat! I dunno if it's me or the new bike, but I have hit some flat speeds lately that I could not hit before. I don't ever recall going faster than 28 on a flat with the Klein. And there wasn't much wind today.

Afterwards, I met with swim coach and he had me doing kick drills until my legs felt like they were going to cramp up and fall off. I didn't tell him I rode beforehand because he probably would have punished even more...

This evening, my 13yo daughter and I are gonna take the 25' Grady White Sailfish (cabin boat) out into the bay, do a little fishing and then camp out if it isn't too windy. We do this a few times a year when the weather is nice.

VN g8r, what is your new bike? I've got an older (2001 or so) cannondale r300? but might update if I really get into it this year.

GT, my new bike is an Orbea Onix carbon fiber frame with matching carbon fiber fork, carbon fiber headset, seat post, bars and headset, Sram Rival 53/39 crank, brakes, derailleurs, 12-26 cog, Look Keo Classic pedals, Orbea seat, and Mavic Ksyrium Elite wheels. Very similar to the current Orbea Onix TDF but with some upgrades.

Very nice. I looked at some Orbea's, a little out of my price range right now. We'll see how into it I get and go from there.

I lied, my bike is a 2001 Cannondale R600 with the older Shimano 105 components. Its flat black and I really like the color of it. The components are OK but they are the older 105's. We'll see how much cycling I do this year. If I do enough, I'll likely upgrade.

Take care and I'll keep you posted on my cycling activities. My LBS does bi-weekly rides of 20-25 miles once the weather warms up. I'll bust it hard on the stationary until the weather warms up and they start their rides. I will easily complete the metric century and a regular century before the season is over. I appreciate you emailing me the century training schedule. I think it can easily be done as long as I keep the training on track.

GT, you have good motivation and there is no question you'll do fine.

Today, I had to work and because of MLK day, the Y closed early, so no practicing the swim drills. Went inside and hit the weights:

Deadlift: 3x10 @ 225#
Bench: 10 @ 135#, 6 @ 185#, failure @ 205# (pathetic), 5 @ 185#, 10 @ 155#
Squats: 3 x 10 @ 135# (thighs parallel to ground)
Dips: 10, 1 (tris were toast by this time)
Barbell bicep curls: 10 @ 50#, 10 @ 60#, 10 @ 50#

Ran 3 miles at a 9 1/2 min. pace.

Overall was a weak performance in the weight room and on the road. I was waaaayyyy off any PBs:(

I woke up today barely able to move. So, I went to the pool and did 10 x 25 yards in the pool kicking on my back at a fast pace. Damn near killed me. So now, my hip flexors and glutes, which were already sore from the squats yesterday, are killing me along with my pecs from the bp. I am a (barely) walking wreck!

hmmmm I will be running a trail race to win, and you will be bulking! green with envy!

oh, but I will also be an ironman this year! heheheehe beeeeeyatch!

I am still sooooo sore, but I called Glenn and arranged to ride 52 miles this morning. I had all kinds of problems with my back from the deadlifts a couple of days ago and my quads from the squats. I managed to tough it out and ended up at 19.5 mph which was not a bad time, considering there was only Glenn and me.

In a couple of days I'll be glad I did this, but not today...
