Funny things you see in the gym

Cynic, I have read and read and read that! I don't use them (anymore) for that reason but does it NOT help with muscle tone? And if it's that useless why do they put you on it to begin with when you join the gym? I always wondered that...

edit: I know that toning has to do more with losing fat but what about working out the muscle?

ok so there were these two dudes at my gym the other day, the one guy must have been new to excercise altogether, because he was doing something along the lines of a military press and asking his buddy,"hey! do u think this will stunt my growth?" and the other one anwsers,"nah! i think u grow till ur like 21 man!" lol!

Ok, so I felt SOO bad for this kid, he was about 15, I wanted to go up to him and tell him but I didn't have to heart to embarras him AND he didn't do this for very long...

you know the calf raise machine? How it has the bar that you lift to place the weight pad comfortably on your leg...well he was pulling on that bar like it was an arm excercise...

I had to look away...

Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaassssssssseeeeeeeeee!!!! Inform me. what is wrong with the inner and outer thigh machines? What's up?

Because the muscles worked by these machines are so small, that there is not much benefit. I dont say that they dont help whatsoever but girls are trained to do eliptical, hip machines, and then abs.

Same as guys train chest, arms, and abs though.

ok got another one for yall....so the other day this girl comes in, and she is there the same amount of time as i was, about an hour...except she did the weirdest thing, she sat down at every machine she was about to use..sat there for about 5 minutes, did one set of 8 or 10, moved on to a different machine and did the same thing. she did this with about 5 different machines, then she just got up and left, didnt repeat any machine once...crazy. why do some people bother going ?

I've seen people doing that before - when joining a new gym, familiarising with equipment - they're not all 100% the same?

I sure as hell did it when I joined new gyms! Make sure I knew how it worked so I could get the instructor to show me before they tried cashing my cheque lol ;)

Okay, so today I was looking for some dumbells for the lateral raise exercise portion.

I go there and this woman is ACTUALLY wrapping the dumbell bar in paper towells. It was even more strange WATCHING her NOT touch the bar while she was wrapping it. Whoa, I thought I was a germaphobe, I swear I wanted to burst out laughing.

I heard a guy fart while he was doing front squat.. and it was me! dang.. those oly lifts squeeze out everything you got.. and if its not all out, the front squat at the end of the day will make sure u go home empty of gas:p

LMFAO!!!! HAHAHAAA!!!!!! OMG THAT WAS SO FUNNY :)

hahah these are some funny stories!! I always get a rise outta watching some people...

i was in the stretching room, and some guy plops down next to me and starts doing crunches. Ok, seems normal...but he starts counting, and LOUD, and breathing like crazy btwn each count...i was like wow dude, chill out...

and then, when he gets to 30, he goes 'COME ON, 10 more, YOU CAN DO IT!!!!", and says this each time he reaches 40, 50, etc... i was like ok, can we please keep it to ourselves???

the other day, this guy was doing crunches, where you twist your body, and put your elbow to the opposite knee...he looked like a fish out of water. He was flopping around, and using so much momentun, flailing every part of his body, and then flopping down after 10 like he just did the hardest workout ever...it was so funny

Sorry, I've been in the middle of a move between apartments and haven't been looking in here.

It'll do as much good as any isolation exercise, such as curls, tricep extensions, etc. You really want to do a more compound movement.

Compound exercises you can do that incorporate the adductors/abductors:

Lateral or side lunges.
Cross over lunges (or courtsies).
I believe sumo deadlifts use the adductors/abductors as synergists.

There's this woman at my gym. She looks about my age, perhaps a it younger and sShe loads 50-75lbs on the sled leg press and looks like she struggles with it.

She's not obese, but she's also not the fittest. She also does walking lunges around the floor with an empty bar, but she does them like regular lunges. She takes a couple steps, steps out, returns to the start, takes a couple more steps.

It's not my place, but I'm wondering if it would be ok to approach and ask her if she'd like to learn a way to maximize on her efforts.

You're gonna love this...
Today there was an older fit woman at the gym with her trainer while I was there. He actually seemed to be acting like he wasn't with her which was confusing. She was one of those middle-aged women who look like they're trying hard to get a second wind out of life. You know the type-the ones in very trendy, very tight outfits showing off whatever they hope they still have..all made up to come to the gym and get noticed.
SO I watched it all play out. She came over to where I was to select 15 pound dumbells and then walked back over to him (and other burly men doing their "thang"). Then she starts to squat with the dumbells held but near her shoulders. Next thing I know she's trying to JUMP with them from squatting to lifting them straight up in the air as she jumps. The first time she does this I was taken off guard like " WHA...WOAH...did she really just try to JUMP with those things?" she got a little off balance and actually didn't make it all the way straight up in the air. Kinda looks around to see if anyone actually saw it, obviously a little embarrassed. Starts to squat again...and JUMPS. this time she lands and totally tips into one of the burly men doing their tricep work on the cables. hahaha. I had to look away. it was too much. No wonder the trainer was trying to ditch her. I'm sure he knew what was coming!

Sparrow=Ya but if he was her trainer, he must've told her to do that exercise.

Cynic what are you saying about the lunge lady? There is nothing wrong with doing lunges around the area and returning to the start position each time, it helps regain balance and a quick breath (since shes not fittest).

My favorites are all the little chickies in thier trendy outfits that really shouldn't be worn in the gym (think malfunctioning clothing) you know, so they have to hold their clothes on!! Walking around flicking there hair giggling while the rest of us are trying to workout. Then they grab the 5lbs db's and watch the guys and try to imitate them giggling the whole time!! And they are in their twenties at the very least!! It's sad to watch. I guess my gym is turning into a pickup joint, but it's really annoying when they get in the way or bang into you bc they are to busy giggling to notice that someone is lifting something heavy next to them. Pathetic or is it just me??

Pathetic.. i know girls like that who go to my gym. I was there lifting to a friend and they were all gigily and imitating big guys doing dumbell curls, just like you said. My friends like "do you know those people" im like "nope!" :p

I personally found it funny when you see the women walk in with the full work out jump suit and all the gear throw themselves at some guy in the gym and ask for help on some workout. The funny part is her expression when the guy helps her with the adjustment or setting and then moves on to finish his workout.
