Friends And Drugs

Im 27 and I have a good friend that I've known since I was 12. He's intelligent and gas a well paid job and company car, but in his spare time his main hobby is getting stoned. This has always been the case but now it appears to be catching up on him. Because of this he doesn't appreciate the impact its having on him. We went out for a drink in the town centre on Friday which was good but soon drifted back to a small pub, then he went onto buy drugs, go home and get stoned.

The main question is really do you have any friends who do drugs and if so does this affect how you behave around them. It irritates me so much that this is main interest and it ruins any sort of social occasion.

Im not going to try and convince not to take drugs because its just second nature to him. This has affected with other friends, its just seems a real bane.

I was an idiot like this guy when I was younger (if he's 27 and still doing it he's likely a lifer)

I kind of dropped all my old friends because of this, we no longer had anything in common and I didn't want to be dragged down with them. The only bad thing is I have very few friends now.

Tell me about it, Ive seen the impact of drugs first hand. It seems so common place. I cant see the point of it. Especially to someone with a welled paid job to just sit around a house getting stoned.

Honestly, most (not all) of my friends have that same extra-curricular (sp?)

I used to be right there with them and now they jokingly give me a hard time for having other priorities. i guess i never really thought about it, but now that i do, the only time i really hang with them is to go to their house to bbq or watch a game or something. it doesnt bother me any more than my friends that just want to shop and eat fast food where as i would rather go to the gym and cook something. man, i need more friends with similar interests.

I had to deal with this with my first boyfriend. He didn't used to do any drugs at all and then something changed 6 months in to our relationship. All he wanted to do was get stoned. I told him that I did not want to be around it or him when he was doing it, but he would still talk about it all the time when I was with him. He was obsessed. I did what any 16 year old girl would do in that situation, and I tried to change him. That went on for about 6 months until he broke up with me. I wasn't relieved until I realized that the drugs were HIS problem and HIS problem alone. It was not my job to fix him, and he didn't want me fixing him. He chose the drugs over me. He obviously had a serious problem. He would have much preferred getting stoned than doing what most teenage boys have on their mind, (if you know what I mean).

So the whole point is, there's no point in trying to change someone if they're not willing to change themselves. If they're dragging you down, then stay away from them. They will soon have to decide which is more important to them, drugs or your friendship.

I'm in a similar situation to you Nae - I was a stoner for many, many years and still have a lot of friends who still partake in the 'evil weed'. I honestly don't have a problem with it. I still see them and they are still my friends we just no longer get stoned together. They're all adults and can make their own decisions about drugs as far as I'm concerned.

I was like that at 27 and didn't consider myself an idiot, I was just having a good time (and I did have a good time :D ) its just now my priorities have shifted and I get a much bigger high from training.

Live and let live I say.

My two teen step sons do it. It's totally ruining their futures.

Then again, if I lived with their mother, I'd be doing drugs, too! LOL

That's the sad thing about the drug. It's not as "high risk" as other drugs. I don't think you can OD on it, and it doesn't physically screw you up like meth does. But it takes away most motivation leaving only the desire to smoke more and eat, a lot. The disadvantages outweigh the advantages in my opinion. For some people, it's fun though. But I can have a lot more fun on my own without having to screw up my lungs or mess with my brain in the process. I have a difficult enough time breathing as it is (with my asthma) why mess it up further?

Having done a plethora of drugs in my past and now a self-confessed expert on beer, I have a ton of friends that still smoke pot and pop pills. I care less what they do.

I'll admit I have a fond place in my heart for valiums and zanex.

Of course there is still the small matter of my birthdays where reckless abandon happens. :)

I know people that do/have done drugs and it doesn't bother me at all. I see no problem with getting a buzz on a saturday night when you're out having a good time. It's if they get addicted and start to rely on them is when it becomes a problem.

Well I have been watching this thread progress for a while now.

About four years ago so when I was 17 - 18 I used to smoke pot in small quantities and then got addicted to the stage where it was a twice a day thing. It was ruining my life for sure all I was doing was hanging out for the next hit.

Anyway a long story short what stopped me smoking it was after I took E and had a really bad reaction to it. Basically everything went to **** I got dropped from the team for failing drug tests, lost my girlfriend (who I now have a kid with incidently) got kicked out of home and lost alot of mates through the process of it all.

Tell anyone, get out as soon as you can before it wrecks your life.

BTW, im not saying it WILL ruin everything but it did for me.

I've never really smoked weed on a regular basis, mainly because I'm a 'sleeper' (you all know one) :yelrotflmao: a few puffs and I'm out like a light so I never saw much purpose behind it other than a sleeping aid. But my best mate since school smokes the stuff daily and has done for about 10 years now. It's never affected our relationship in the slightest and to be honest I can't imagine how it ever could

What's the big deal? When I stay at his place he'll get stoned and I won't, we still have a laugh and go out for a beer

I know this is an unpopular view but weed isn't some evil drug, I've done a lot of stuff in my time and still have friends with various drug addictions and I can promise you that weed is nothing. Charlie is bad, chrystal meth is a bit scary but weed is so far down the scale it's not worth tripping out over

i totally and completely relate and agree with this post!

the only thing that i'd add is that my friends who smoke (only talking about weed - which is non-addictive btw) AND who happen to be are slackers would slackers with or without the weed. it's just their personalities. they pretty much slack off in every part of their lives but that's them, not the weed. on the other hand, many of my friends smoke (and i mean SMOKE!) and have done so for a long time and aren't slackers and don't lack motivation at all. they basically know when to do it and when not to and it's just as recreational and fun as drinking. (the only difference being that alcohol is worse for your body!)

on the other hand, i think everyone should do mushrooms at least one time in their lives. you'll never believe what your mind is of capable of or see how beautiful the world really, really is until you can step outside of yourself and your own subconscious limitations and preconceived notions and well...mushrooms allow you to do this (and NO, i'm not tripping right now!)

oh, and if you haven't done shrooms, don't knock it till you try it. :)

Have you ever tried cactus juice? Lol, certain Cacti have mescaline in them and you can extract it to make a quite disgusting drink. It's more subtle than mushrooms but that just adds to the appeal in many ways, you can function normally but your perception of everything is out and you can have odd trippy episodes especially where bright lights and movement is involved

are you talking about peyote or just a certain juice? no, haven't tried but i'd totally be into that.

anyway, if you are talking about peyote, then i'd love to try it. anything that was good enough for native americans is cool with me! :)

There are 2 cacti I know of that contain mescaline and Peyote is the one I've tried, lol, you know your stuff. I won't go into preperation details though because there might be kids reading ;)

well, sounds like you really know your stuff! i'm so jealous that you tried peyote. it's still my mission to try it one day but it just seems completely out of reach (although you seem to know some secrets, ahem ). i came close when i went to japan but of course (just my freakin' luck) it became illegal right before i arrived.

anyway, i'm glad to know that there are people out there who will openly talk about drugs. it helps to have real discussions because you can begin to differentiate different drugs/psychotopics from the each other and from the "war on drugs." in that way, people are more likely of thinking about drugs instead of just being reactive.

Just a thought, because I don't know the US drug laws, but are the seeds of the peyote cacti illegal to buy and sell? That's a common legal loophole that'll allow you to grow them yourself. I just googled Peyote seeds and found a load of UK sites you can buy them from
