As for shoes, I always buy cross trainers as I need the extra support and the cushioning is usually better. They usually weigh more though so your legs may get tired faster. "Walking" shoes are usually lighter (probably due to the slightly lesser cushioning). Also, I use a different pair for exercising than for everyday wear so that the cushioning lasts longer. When i get a new pair, they automatically become my "exercisers" and the old ones become my new everyday pair. This way the cushioning in my exercise pair is always "fresh".
