Floater's diary

Had a marathon phone call with a friend. Now having lunch: red lentil stew with pollock. I'm really not in the mood to go swimming but we´ll see how I feel about that after I've eaten.

MOTHERF*R the floor where the air con had spilled earlier is now split. Like, the wood panel has split. So I gotta contact the janitor and the bank that owns the apartment, and figure out who fixes it and if I have to pay for it. Thank goodness I have home insurance. And thank god I was in the next room on my computer as the original water spill happened because insurance wouldn't cover this otherwise.

Ouch, that sucks. I hope insurance will pay up without a problem if you do get stuck with it.
Me too, I'll drop dead from stress if I have to pay for it out of pocket.

Had a long walk in the cold, misty late summer night to cool my mind and body down and found out I was starving, so I'm now making a weird-ass "scarcity is the mother of invention" dish made of onions, sauerkraut, soy mince, spices, tomato paste and pasta. To be honest I'm hungry enough to eat bricks right now.

I'll pack my gym gear before I go to sleep. Tomorrow is going to be filled with stressful phone calls.

EDIT well at least the autumn-y soy mince and pasta thing is good

Ouch my stomach didn't appreciate the dish made out of only high FODMAP ingredients, who would've thought? /s

I love that the weather is getting colder. Love love love.

🤞 for the floor. You did not need this stress!
Thanks, forum mom :grouphug:

I called the bank and sent an email with a picture of the damage to the boss of the janitorial staff so let's hope that everything will be sorted out. I feel so ashamed. But it could have happened to anyone I think.

Breakfast: lentil stew with leftover potatoes and pollock fillet.

Definitely the kind of thing that could happen to anyone. Also: I don't know the law in your country but here they can only make you may for the square meters of floor that were ruined in your care. Even if you're considered awfully negligent. Never the whole floor.

That would sound sensible. Otherwise, greedy landlords could abuse this and make tenants pay for massive renovations! 💐

They will strip and redo the whole floor and insurance won't pay for it.

I'm fucked. It's going to cost several thousands.

I am actually having s*icidal thoughts about this

I suggest you ask assistance about getting law advice, because making you pay for an entire new floor sounds drastic.

I would think their insurance would cover that. Get legal advice for sure. They would always go the bully tactics first obviously rather than the harder way for them. This is damage to the property rather than the contents of your apartment,

Woke up mega anxious. Vacuumed, changed my bed sheets, cleaned up Heikki's cage, did laundry. In the light of the morning it seems incredibly stupid that I'd have to pay for a complete floor makeover when the damage is honestly so tiny. If I weren't so oafishly honest and painfully anxious, I could have bought a 10-€ container of silicon sludge and fastened the crooked floor element back on myself. (But, knowing how hazardous DIY home renovations can be, I would never.)

Update - there are good news and bad news.

Bad news is that the damage was more extensive than I thought. The water damage is 3,4 m2 and it will have to be dried and the floor has to bestripped and redone. The good news however is that they can limit the new flooring to the smaller room, which is 8m2. The old guy who came to check and map the damage told me to not lose sleep over this, he said he has done similar jobs a lot both this summer and the last. He'll write a report and send it to me, and I can then send it to the insurance company. He was really nice about it. And even if I have to pay for the drying and the new floor out of pocket, the cost shouldn't be astronomical. And the guy said that insurance companies always try to wiggle out of paying at first so I should just chill out until he's done the report and then I can try to get them to pay. Of course, I need to empty the room and take down the curtains and everything until the job is done but that's perfectly doable. My living room is gonna look a bit cluttered for a while but all in all this isn't the end of the world.

Also, the microwave oven I ordered in March finally arrived and it's the prettiest, fiercest little home appliance I have ever seen. I´m glad I dished out an extra 40 euros to get a red one, it's really cute. I just need to breathe in and out and keep my wits about me.

Breakfast (at 3PM lol): two wieners, summer potatoes, and marg. I heated the wieners in my new microwave oven - the first ever micowave I have bought new. I'm just as excited about it as some people are over new cars lol. I'll go for a long walk now. I'll take things easy today and worry tomorrow.

I had a nice long walk and I'll go have another before Heikki wakes up. Here's a pic of him from last night. He's such a handsome lil dude with an impressive ´stache.
