Drex's Journal

as a fellow athlete I will also add this- if you were to put on a few lbs you would feel STRONGER maybe. you have the same look I do when I am below 184, and I "feel" week and spent at that weight.

in the case you feel that way a lil bit, know this Drex, a few lbs of "enjoying life" wouldn't kill you!

sure hope you read that in the right spirit. :hug2:

Ah I see. Asking because 99% of the time when people do power cleans, its very heavy weights and usually less than 5 reps.

Good job on the runs btw.

I also do 30 power cleans at time Phate. Do not question yourself or your trainer Drex.

Phate, we are trying to maintain some level of muscle while grinding it down for 120 plus minutes daily. It is a funny balance to try and keep.

When you are a BB and then using cardio to keep tone, it is totally different then when you are a Cardio, and using lifting to keep from evaporating.

The only problem about gaining weight is lowering your relative Vo2max. Its pretty awesome that you guys are able to keep some muscle with the ammount of cardio you do.

Thanks FF! I am not close to qualifying for Boston. I would have to shave off almost 45 mins off my goal time. I also am not sure if I will be running any more marathons. I am going to be working on adding more muscle and probably stick more to triathlon races.

As for putting on a few lbs, after I finished my cut May 31, I started eating 300 more calories per day to stay at maintenace. Since then my run times have been drastically faster. So I think you are right on the money with that.

The marathon is this Saturday, June 21.

Thanks g8r80, we finished 2nd in the 90+ age group (combined team age) for teams. We each got a silver medal. There were only a total of 4 teams in our division though. It isn't showing the results for the Oly Team event on the website yet, but they had it posted at the park. At 6:00AM it was beautiful out. About 30 mins before the race started a storm moved in. The wind picked up. There was a 15 minute delay on the start since the wind blew the buoys away. So, we had rain and strong winds to deal with. My sister finished the swim in just over 26 mins, I averaged 17.7 mph for the 24.8 mile bike and my dad finished the 10k run in just over 44 mins. I don't remember the exact times. I had the wind to my back for 8 of the first 10 miles and was averaging 22.3 mph at the 10 mile mark. The way back was mostly against the wind and was a fight.

race week! for the Big Marathon

DO NOT UNDERMINE YOURSELF! You have worked too hard to blow it over some internal self esteem issue. You can do great and I won't push the Boston idea.

NAIL THIS THING DREX!

Todd

Thanks FF :) No issues. I will be ready to run this Saturday. I will be content as long as I finish this in under 4 hours. I plan on finishing in under 3:45. I am really looking forward to this, but I will also be happy once it is finally done. :)

that's how I am beginnign to feel abotu my 140.6. I am going to finish in 13:59:59 or less. and then I am so doing a sprint triathlon!

You look like an ironman!

You'll do great man!

Thanks FF and g8r80!!

I am faster than I have ever been right now. Since June 1 my speed has been increasing faster than it ever has before. I feel great right now.

Played 6 games of volleyball, went 5-1.

Ran 4 miles outside; 28:49.

Rowing for 30 mins in the AM. Taking it easy now until the race. Went for a walk to the library to drop off some books with my wife and daughter, about 5 miles round trip.

Today was the last run of my training schedule. It was a 2 mile, easy paced run...and I couldn't finish it. I don't understand it, but at 1 mile my right quad tightened up on me. I have never had any issues with my quads while running, although it is the same spot it tightened up on me during the bike on Sunday, but I have run since then. I stopped and stretched it out. It was ok for a little bit although it was still tight. At about 1.5 miles it tightened up again. As I tried to stretch it out and walk it off some both my calves tightened up. I tried to run and couldn't. I had a slow walk for the last half mile. If anyone has any insight please let me know. At this point all I can do is hope resting tomorrow will be enough.

I am starting to think that tapering off and taking it easy this last week was a bad idea for me. Maybe I should have just kept hammering at it until the race.

I leave tomorrow morning and will be back Sunday evening. The race is Saturday morning. Goal time is 3:45. I am a little bummed and worried about what happened today. It doesn't make any sense to me.

I knew it was bad for something like that to happen on Thursday. Something that has never been an issue and something that affected me that much. I only made it about a mile and a half before my right quad started tightening up. I pushed it as far as a could before I went to the side and stopped, less than 2 miles into the race. I started to try to stretch it out but immediately every muscle in both legs started cramping on me and I was stuck in a position where I couldn't even move. I didn't move for about 15 minutes. I made a few attempts but all my muscles went haywire as soon as I tried to move. After about 15 minutes I was able to stand back up. I waited for the bus. When the bus was about 100 yards from me, following the last runner, I decided to give walking a try. I started walking and trying to loosen up, but everything hurt. When the pain went down low enough I decided to try a slow run. That didn't last long as the cramps came back. I stopped sooner and walked and kept checking at how close the bus was getting to me and decided I would see how long I could stay in front of it. I started stints of running until the cramps came on and then walking while the cramps were there. It was very painful, but I eventually started making ground ahead of the bus. I tried different things and around mile 8 I found I could maintain my run a lot longer with a very slow jog where my strides were very short, with my heel landing at about the toe of the other foot. I was able to go up to a half mile at a time before the cramps became too bad doing this. I made it to the finish line, but this is one of the most painful experiences I have gone through.

I felt embarassed, upset, and very dissapointed. I had done everything I was supposed to do leading up to this race. I had never had a problem like this. I have gone through everything trying to figure out what could cause this. The closest thing I can think of is that I ended up with an abscess a couple weeks ago and had the root canal done on Monday, that possibly toxins from that got into the muscles, but I think that is a long shot. I am going to try to run here in a few days and if I have problems I will be going in to see a doctor.

I am going to stick with my current plans for the next year, but now I still need to run a marathon. Twin Cities is already closed for this year. I am going to plan on doing Twin Cities next year in October. That will give me the winter for lifting and then I can start marathon training again around April.

Years ago, I was on a half-century organized ride (I wasn't in very good shape back then) and at about the 40-mile mark, I felt that pre-cramping quivering in my right quad. When I stopped at a light, I put my right foot down and my leg right cramped up so badly, I couldn't straighten it and I fell over! A team orthopedist for a local high school football team happened to be right behind me and gave me a deep massage that allowed me to hobble the last 10 miles, which took forever.

Kudos to you for gutting out 24.2 miles while battling cramps the entire way!

On another note, I will be arriving on Saturday, but have to be in Rochester by Saturday by 5pm. Do you wanna go for about a 20-mile ride late Saturday morning, assuming your quads are okay by then?

are you registered for another event (26.2) yet? Get it done!

FF

I would have liked to have the Twin Cities marathon as an option in October, but registration is already closed. I had looked around, but didn't see any other marathons around my area. My current plan is to do the Twin Cities marathon in 2009. I may then follow that up and do Grandma's in 2010. Grandma's in 2009 doesn't fit well into what I have planned for training and events.

ok,,, so how about SD ND and WI or IA? DUDE! you leave on a friday after work, get into a hotel, make the run and drive home sunday. If sunday, then you burn a sick day, or drive all night and then go in.

IT IS SUMMER TIME and you are prepared to make a sub 4 hour marathon!

This is critical I believe!

as you friend and fellow athlete

Todd

yes you finished, but don't let a lil ol run kick your a$$ like this! how it happened makes no difference, it happened.. you are in shape, strong, built, 6'5" and have a work ethic and self disciplione I admire! Go out an own the 26.2.

For the rest of your life you will be glad you did!

I have done what I do, come thru when a pal is struggling. If you are running for the body only, then you hae it, but if there is anything spiritual, mental or internal about this I am with you as long as you are "willing to suffer." XO's to you big guy! you have seen me struggle, you are not alone.

Thanks FF. :) You are great.

The Life Time Fitness Torchlight is only a 5k event. I had info on the Mt. Rushmore marathon, but that would be a long hike and my wife, who would want to come with, is limited on vacation time. I spent last night searching options though and found this.

This is about 1 hour North of where my sister lives. I can drive out to her place on Saturday and then drive home after the race on Sunday. It is only about a 6 hour drive.

I am going to make a doctors appt for this Friday. What happened to me isn't normal and I don't know if I can even run yet. I am still way too sore from all of the muscle cramps to know how I will be once I start to feel better. Once I am feeling a little better I will go for a run. As long as I don't cramp up I will register for this marathon.

I will still plan to do Twin Cities in 2009 and Grandma's in 2010. I might even plan to put up a Boston qualifying time (3:10 for my age group) in Grandma's 2010.

Thanks for your support both FF and g8r80, it is much appreciated.
