Did you do it without the Gym

You're right about the construction workers, they are rocking the muscles.

I would think you could get tone without machines, you just have to be creative.

You don't need a gym - it's in a person's best interest to exercise... both for the vanity purpose... and for your long term health...

You dont need a gym for body weight exercise... you don't need a gym to go out and walk/jog/run...

*nods* I exercise plenty without a gym and it seems to be working, slowly but surely. I knowI can lose weight without a gym.

It was more the oh well without gym equipment you will be all flabby and gross once the weight is off comment. that only with gym equipment I can keep my skin from sagging and what not.

When I was 14 and went from 190 to 140 with diet alone. I was relatively slim at that point but I still had a belly. Once I lost the weight I dropped a lot of my good eating habits and a few years down the road I weighed in at 300.

From my experience now I'd say that working out/going to a gym makes it a lot easier to keep the weight off without having to worry about every single little thing you're eating

Some good alternatives to not going to the gym are buying a bowflex or some other piece of machinery. I personally enjoy going to the gym everyday. It not only helps maintain your body but helps relieve stress, plus for me its something ONLY for me.

People say they never have enough time for themselves, so being at the gym is my time for myself. Just something to think about.

However, I also agree with everyone here. You don't necessarily need a gym. I only own one piece of exercise equipment, a pull up bar at my house. I do push ups, sit-ups, crunches, leg lifts, and yoga, P90x, and run around my neighborhood(on the days I don't go to the gym).

Also, picking a gym is hard. You have to find somewhere your comfortable, if the place doesn't feel right when you try it out, go onto the next one. Also, If your not a morning person I would suggest finding (if you do get a membership somewhere) a place that is near/on the way to and from work, that way you can stop and workout before going home instead of finding an excuse not to go.
(ex. too far away, i'll just go home for a little bit after work, etc.)

Just some things to consider.

are you expecting to lose the weight and then be done with exericse and eating right? :D

this should be a lifestyle change -so I do expect to be working out for the rest of my life to maintain the work i've put in ...

That's just it. I won't necessairly be able or want to find time to go to the gym for the rest of my life, or even have to money to do it (and I actually don't have the money for it right now, anyways). But being outside, walking, biking, running, they're all activities I love to do outdoors (even at my weight), and have loved to do outdoors since I was a young child. I go outside for the love of the outdoors, so wouldn't it make sense for me to learn to incorporate good exercise into my current lifestyle instead of trying to force myself into a gym, where I actually hate to be?

I don't see a gym being a long term solution for me, but I know doing exercise outside on my own realistically could be.

you make a good point .. the gym sadly for allot is just too expensive, so alternatives are a must.. so for the people that can afford the gym you will always gravitate towards it ...

Naturally? Is weight lost through a fitness program somehow unnatural?

Personally I would say exercise is necessary at every stage of the journey and for the rest of your life. I would venture a guess that the most successful losers/maintainers here are also hitting the gym or exercising at least 3x a week if not more.

Speaking personally, I go to the gym 6x a week. My weekday workout is 20 minutes of cardio followed by 20 minutes of strength training. I also do conditioning exercises (like ab work) at home most days of the week. My weekend workout is usually double what I do on a weekday.

In short: you need to exercise unless there's a compelling medical reason not to, and that's not a judgment any of us can make.

Hey Texas Gal, give the guy some slack. He asked about toning his body not weight loss through exercise. I have done it both ways and the healthiest way is through proper nutrition not OCD workouts which is definitely unnatural.

In short: you do not need to exercise to lose excess fat.

Can i hear from people who lost allot of weight and did not set foot into a gym ? or is a gym 100% neccesary in the final stages of toneing ... and buy gym i mean equipment be it at home or in the gym...

just curious as to who lost weight naturally

I lost 108 lbs of fat through good nutrition and moderate walking. Natural, as you say.

So, the gym is not necessary and in fact can be counter-productive in many ways for weight loss. Toning muscles is another matter.

How do you expect to 'tone' without doing resistance training? It's kinda essential.

The only thing that is UNnatural with losing weight is getting plastic surgery.

If people want to work there butts off instead of being lazy and not exercising please do not put them down by calling their method 'unnatural'. Its a lot of hard work, something you dont seem to know anything about.

OP: You should be exercising 30 minutes a day, enough to get your heart rate up, for your health. Although it will help fat loss greatly.

You need to re-read my posts. Where did I say BIGGZ should not do resistance training?

The only thing? How about abusing diuretics and laxatives, Bulimia, Anorexia, and Obsessive exercise?

I will put anyone down that promotes compulsive exercise and other unhealthy behavior

Yikes! Are you a psychic?

You should be exercising 30 minutes a day, enough to get your heart rate up, for your health. Although it will help fat loss greatly.

Ah! You are a physician, and/or an exercise physiologist! Perhaps a trainer and a psychic? Look, since you do not know ANYTHING about my health take your 30 minutes a day and stick it where the moon doesn't shine, Sheila.

Relax people lol .. no need to catfight...

At the end of the day we establish that the gym is not needed but excersize is needed to tone .. but hey dont some people look ok without toneing ?

and to tackle the whole 'natural' 'un-natural' why does it seem to offend allot of the gym people ? come on walking in the park is natural .. walking on a treadmil is natural but the process by which you are doing it is not natural your using man made equipment that allows you to replicate natural movement... so i see no need to get upset and defensive.

but hey dont some people look ok without toneing ?
Toning is a byproduct of fat loss...

Some people have good genetics that leave them with decent muscles under the fat - but if their genetics are that good, then they probably don't have much fat to begin with.

If a person has a lot of weight to lose, then they are best served by doing some form of strength training from the get-go (with a gym or without) because when you are eating at caloric deficit -you lose muscle. Strength training will help maintain those muscles you do have.

With regards to walking - as long as you are progressing, and getting your heart rate up - doesn't matter how you go about doing it - treadmill or outside...

OCD workouts? Excuse me, but who do you think you are to walk in here with only 9 posts and accuse people on this board of having eating disorders or obsessive-compulsive disorder?

ITA.

How dare you come in here and accuse people in here of unhealthy behavior.

I will put anyone down that promotes compulsive exercise and other unhealthy behavior

And I will put down newbies who don't know what they're talking about.

What are YOU? Who are YOU to come in here and talk to us that way?

EVERYONE knows you should be doing 30 minutes of exercise per day for your health.

You don't need to be a doctor to figure out that.

I've worked with hundreds of people with ED's (going back to 1987) with coursework in Dietetics and Nutrition (no interest in clinical work, so passed on the degree). I doubt that you have read anything I have written besides the 2 posts that got up your nose. Lurking this forum for about a year and a half but only joined when I had something to say which was actually days after you did. So, you can call me a newbie but if you think that the value of a posting is in any way related to the number of posts you are just plain goofy.
