Naturally? Is weight lost through a fitness program somehow unnatural?

Personally I would say exercise is necessary at every stage of the journey and for the rest of your life. I would venture a guess that the most successful losers/maintainers here are also hitting the gym or exercising at least 3x a week if not more.

Speaking personally, I go to the gym 6x a week. My weekday workout is 20 minutes of cardio followed by 20 minutes of strength training. I also do conditioning exercises (like ab work) at home most days of the week. My weekend workout is usually double what I do on a weekday.

In short: you need to exercise unless there's a compelling medical reason not to, and that's not a judgment any of us can make.

by naturally i ment not using equipment, i know allot of well toned people that dont work out, but due to day to day activities they stay in shape, im not agaist the gym, but it just seem like something that the typical person will not commit to for long periods of time

That's a pretty big assumption.

It does seem that you're anti-gym. That's fine; do what works for you. However, it's a little insulting to imply that those of us who use a gym are not losing weight "naturally".

Toning is a by product of fat loss... you lose the fat - whatever muscle underneath starts to show...

Exercise helps to speed up the process

Strength training - whether it be with equipment or body weight alone -helps to maintain the muscle that you currently have... If you are in caloric deficit you aren't goint to gain big bulging muscles - and i'm not sure if you're female or not - but i think you are -as a female you're genetically predispostioned to NOT gain bulging muscles...

I lost my first 100lbs by simply walking... and doing reasonable body weight exercise.. the next 100 came off wiht a gym membership -- and the only thing that changed there was walkng faster and adding in more weight to strength training...

You don't need a gym... but it doesnt hurt...

Trust me, im not trying to insult, im on my way to going to the gym myself .... come on, im just seeking answers ... you see yourself going to the gym for years to come ?

are you expecting to lose the weight and then be done with exericse and eating right? :D

this should be a lifestyle change -so I do expect to be working out for the rest of my life to maintain the work i've put in ...

thanks for the imput .. im male :patriot: lol .. thing is im excited to go to the gym, as i really want to tone and scult, but what i fear is that if and when i reach that stage will i still have to push to continue for years and years to come ...

and after hitting the gym for years, when you stop dont you get outta shape faster than how you got into it ... ?

:biggrinjester: naw, when i go to the gym, i see mainly people age group of 19-39 a few older ,,, just thiking that in the long run the gym cannot be a life long thing ?? but staying in shape can so learing how to without the gym would be a plus

I'm older than 39 - and I live in a very young area - I do see people older than I am at the gym.. For some it's a lifestyle and like goingto the gym to get away...

my father is 75 years old and has a home gym... and is in great shape physically... he works out every single day and has never had a gym membership - he works out and home because that is what works out for his busy schedule...

you have to do what's right for you and expect it to work for the rest of your life

Some people have gone to the same gym 3x or more per week for years. Decades.

There used to be a fitness club near my parents' house that was there for 25 years. You should have heard the HOWLS when they closed it. Some people in the neighborhood had been going there several times per week since it opened. I guess not ENOUGH of them went to keep it open, or the real estate was simply too valuable to run a health club on it.

If you don't want to join a gym, fine. That's your choice. Plenty of people lose large amounts of weight without joining a gym. Personally, I could not simply throw on a pair of sneakers and jog my way to fitness. I don't like to jog. I like to work out in an air conditioned room on a machine that measures my heart rate for me among other things, where I can listen to music or watch TV. The weight I lose in this manner is no less "natural" or "real" than the weight you lose jogging or walking. Period.

Personally, I enjoy going to the gym and can see myself doing it for years to come, if not forever. Just because you don't doesn't mean other people won't, or that we'll fail at weight loss or maintenance because we don't know how to do it any other way. That's asinine.

dont see why you getting so defensive ... :blush5: im not attacking you and the gym ... just asking questions and getting info so chillax

I just don't think it's appropriate to criticize what works for other people.

Personally I would not and could not jog my way to fitness but I'm not going to fault you or say your weight loss isn't "natural" because you do jog. You do what works for YOU, I'll do what works for ME.

i was just being technical , i didnt say it eont work .. technically using quipment is not natural ... and for the last time, im heading to the gym myself so why would i be knocking it lol ... its all good

No prob. I used to do middle distance running (not sprints, but not marathons either) and it wrecked my knees. I couldn't jog now even if I wanted to. Maybe when I get to a healthier weight and there's less stress on my knees, I could try it...but if I did it now I'd be in agony for days! The gym is also good for those of us who do need guidance and the financial motivation of not wasting our money. My gym membership isn't expensive but it's not free either. :biggrinjester:

Exactly. Anyone can just drop pounds, go back to their old habits of poor exercise and nutrition, and they'll gain them right back. I've done that before.

It's not about numbers anymore. I want to be healthy for the rest of my life. I'm 19 and I actually think I'm one of the younger ones at my gym. I see A LOT of older people in there. I actually saw an OLDDDDDDDDD dude in there yesterday. By old I mean he has his walker and was just walking around the machines. It was awesome.

I go at the same time every day and there's always a gaggle of old ladies from a swim class changing back into their regular clothes in the dressing room. Some of them look well past 75-80 years old. I think that's awesome.

guess it happens mostly where i live .. firstly about 4 gyms here .. all young people, and when i went to get info the people there starting making jokes that if i sign up and come for more than one year they pay me lol .. just that they saying the lifespan of the average person coming to the gym is like 8mhts .. which i think is kinda bad, so i wanted a wider scope on things

I know someone who lost weight without a gym. They looked flabby and messy, but they lost weight.
