Default Julie's food & exercise journal

Checking in again. It's been a while. I haven't stuck to my low sugar diet. I did for 2 weeks and then started caving. Yeah, I'm weak. But I decided it's okay to be weak. Sometimes I'm too hard on myself.
Since this week I started intermittent fasting. 16:8. So 16 hours of fasting, 8 hours of being allowed to eat. I did the 2 days of 24 h fasting before, but it was too hard to stick to it. The 16:8 is going okay so far. But I'm doing it slightly differently. I make sure I get the 16h period of no eating but when I have to get up really early for work, I make sure I'll have my last meal of the day a bit sooner the day before. I'll stop eating at 4 instead of 8, for example, so I can get some food in me at around 8 the next day.
Doing some more sports now. But again, not being too hard on myself. I started running again, but instead of trying to run as fast as possible, I just run recreationally. I run to enjoy myself, and that way it's less of a 'task'. I also found myself a fitness buddy.
I might weigh myself tomorrow. Or maybe not, if I don't feel like it. But that's okay.

Today's food:
- spaghetti with tomato & vegetable sauce
- soup
- 2 bananas
- oatmeal with dark chocolate

Today's exercise: Not much, only some mat exercises while watching a Netflix show

Sounds like an excellent way to go about it. Anything that feels like a chore won´t work long-term.

I think I did pretty okay today
Food:
- oatmeal with chocolate (small portion because pre workout)
- tuna sandwich
- some sort of Asian salad
- banana and mandarine
- fresh orange juice

Exercise:
- half an hour run
- cycling to work and back (40 min)

Weighed in and I'm back to 64 kg. Well, could be worse after the holiday :)

Quetelet was most noted for his application of statistical sciences to social conditions. his development of the Quetelet Index, noted the relationship of weight to the square of the height of average adults. it was the misguided researcher, Ancel Keys, who adapted Quetelet's work in developing the BMI tables 100 years later.

i would not call BMI worthless as it does retain its base statistical value for comparisons, though it should probably not be used as a absolute scale of fitness. in my case it was fairly accurate. at my worst, BMI=32, my waist was in fact getting into the 40" range. statistically, that is exactly what has been determined as a sign of obesity (in men... 36" for women). i would call my weight loss a change in eating habits rather than a diet and currently i seem to have bottomed out at a BMI=23.5. solidly in the healthy range.

BMI is hogwash, pardon my French.

According to BMI a 6'4'' males best weight is between 145lbs to 200lbs.

In no world is an average male healthy at 145lbs at 6'4''. Can they be, yes but this is an extreme and not the norm.

Better to go by bodyfat% but again that is just another tool and the tests are not even close to 100% accurate. We all have different bone structures, genetics, muscle mass ect.

I've got an okay bmi, but I also think it doesn't say that much about your health and fitness. A friend of mine is crazy fit and muscular but she's heavier due to all these muscles. Also, bone structure I think.
But I bought myself a scale that counts your body fat and stuff like that. I'm curious. My scale now is not a digital one and it's hard to read in detail. And my best friends has that smart scale and is quite happy about it. Was just 44 euro.

Sooo today:
- coconut curry with vegetables and grains
- salad with salmon
- a bar with nuts (I don't think it was very healthy, it didn't taste healthy but I forgot to check...)

Exercise: just cycling from work and back. My other work so like 70 minutes of cycling.

The bioelectric scales are ok for tracking bodyfat % trends over a long period of time but are relatively useless for giving you an exact number as they are very inaccurate and will fluctuate a lot depending on several condition including hydration levels etc.

Alright, thanks, I'll keep that in mind.. but the most important thing is that it measures my weight I guess! i'm going to pick it up in the post office tomorrow.

My food today:
- 2 bananas and a mandarine
- tuna sandwich
- curry and grains (leftovers from yesterday)
- 2 chocolate chip cookies and 2 pieces of chocolate

So yeah, quite a lot. Though it doesn't feel like it was a lot. I must say I quite enjoy the intermittent fasting. It feels like... I'm in control more? I know I won't lose weight doing it while I keep eating loads but that's not necessarily bad. The end goal is feeling good about myself, in my own skin. If I can do that without losing weight that's good too... Y'know? But apparently i do need to feel a bit in control.. cause that's helping right now. And also keeping track, posting about it and getting response from you guys. So thanks!

Anyway, tomorrow will be a cheat day because i'm going out with colleagues, soon to be ex colleagues. You know I said I had two jobs? One of my employers just offered me a full time position so I'll be starting there in 2 weeks time. Yay! It's in my home town so I'll have more free time. So I'll be cycling to work each day instead of cycling and taking the train.

Speaking of cycling: that's all of the exercise I had today. 40 minutes of cycling.

Congrats on becoming full-time, Julie & yay to being able to cycle to work!
It does feel much better being back in control of what you eat. I was really disappointed that IF as not for me, but glad it's good for you.

I don't think I could ever do IF without cheat days. I mean, when I travel or go out in the weekend, I don't want to limit myself in such a way. But during normal weekdays I'm perfectly happy with it.
Sooo it's been a while! That scale I bought is completely worthless! First it said my weight was 65 with 25 percent of fat, next day I'm down to 57 with 19 percent of fat (I wish). It's a piece of crap! Medisana is the brand by the way. Don't buy it. I'll just stick to my old scale...

My food today:
- mediterraenean (that's not the correct spelling, is it:)) vegetables with feta and grains
- some oats with rice milk and chocolate
- tuna sandwich
- cookie

Exercise:
- half an hour of cycling
- half an hour of mat exercises

Weight: 64

Today I said goodbye to my colleagues of my old job by baking brownies for them. So yeh, not a very healthy day :)

Food:
- wrap with humus and feta
- oatmeal with chocolate and ricemilk
- meditareanean vegetables with feta, olives and grains
- brownie (which was quite delicious, I must say:))

Exercise: 40 minutes of cycling. Quite fast on my way back because I wanted to catch the train. I missed it.

My first day at my new work today, so I made brownies again, but adjusted the recipe to make it a bit healthier. Less sugar, less butter, and I added a banana. I'm not delusional though, it's still brownie. :)

I went out this weekend so there was quite some alcohol involved. Lots of dancing too, so at least some of these calories got burnt. Now I'm starting an alcohol free month. Lots of Belgians do this in february. It's called 'tournée minerale'.

food today:
- spinach pizza with some added veggies
- tuna sandwich
- piece of brownie

exercise:
- An hour of cycling (work)

You're a very kind person, to be making farewell brownies for both your soon-to-be-ex workmates and your new workmates! :) Were the healthy brownies as delicious as the not-quite-so-healthy ones?
Cheers to alcohol-free February! There's something similar in Australia, called Dry July, supported (oddly enough) by a liquor outlet called BWS (for Beer, Wine and Spirits).

Hey Julie, good to see you doing so well.
tournée minerale
I had to look that up, never heard of it. It seems like a good idea, and from what I read people who do the tournée minerale end up drinking less for months afterwards. Why February?

Is that you in your avatar picture? Cool picture, even cooler if its you.

Hehe, it's like greenwashing but with public health. Drywashing! Actually, AB Inbev also invests in initiatives like campaigns against bingedrinking, so that's similar. I read the other day consumption of beer is going down in most countries.

I think it's february because the two months before are (in)famous for drinking. Christmas, new year's eve and then all of these new year's receptions in january. So then in february people really want to detox their liver. They can't do it in the summer, that's for sure, 'cause Belgians are too fond of festivals, barbecues, and all sorts of other summer activities that involve a cool glass of beer.
No, it's not me in the pic. It's a still from 'stranger things'. I like that show.
Is it you in yours?

So today I'm preeeetty confident I burnt more calories than I took in.

Foodiez:
- salad with chickpeas, beans and asparagus
- a failed attempt of a body & fit pancake. It didn't properly bake so it was more like ... Oatmealy. But not as good as oatmeal. Hmmm, oatmeal's the best.
- eggsalad sandwich
- two mandarins

Exercise:
- 1 hour of cycling to work and back
- 1 hour and a half of fitness

That sounds like a very good day, Julie :)
