Yup. It's "the birds and the bees". As I said, yours does make more sense. I'm not entirely sure if there is any sort of analogue behind it, I think it's just one o those sayings that doesn't make a whole lot of sense when taken out of its original context. I mean, honestly, the birds and the bees freaks me out a bit. I'm not down with that interspecies stuff. Yeah, I'm talkin' to you, Tom.
Edit: Take "worth his weight in salt", for example. There were many different times and cultures in the distant past where this was similar to saying something like "worth his weight in gold", because salt was actually worth more than gold, ounce for ounce, but it fails to make any sense to someone hearing it today. Worth his weight in gold, on the other hand, still works just fine.
