Here's some general info on Banff...

Banff at a Glance
The world famous resort town of Banff is located in the centre of Banff National Park, flanked on all sides by Alberta's Rocky Mountains. Countless visitors travel to the town each year, lured by the cozy resorts, unparalleled recreational opportunities and some of Canada's finest shopping and dining. Sunshine Village Ski Resort and Norquay are home to deep powder, deluxe mountain lodgings and some of the world's largest ski and snowboard events. The national park itself offers opportunities for mountain camping, hiking excursions and wildlife viewing. Banff has also built a reputation as a popular weekend retreat destination during the warm summer months. With renowned restaurants, decadent spas, eclectic boutiques and bustling nightclubs offering something for any taste, Banff has insured that guests will continue to visit the town year round. Banff is 144 km (90 mi) from Calgary and just a short trip to the mountain areas of Lake Louise, Kananaskis Country and Canmore.

There's kayaking for the adventurous. There's fishing, site seeing, golfing. And lots of tours from boat tours to walking tours to bike tours. And if there's anyone here who are more into the arts... If we get there before September, there's a comic exhibition of Canadian comics & magazines from now til September. As well as an art collection focusing on the Rocky Mountains.

So we better pick up the pace guys if we wanna get there soon. ;)

OH! And here are some photos of beautiful Banff!

Wow troutman you truyly are inspriational. If you get out and go that far each day I certainly can make more of an effort to do so as well.

Of course you can join. We can log both km's and miles.

Ok I better put on my running shoes on and get a moving.

You guys journaling?

I just joined and I have been working on losing weight for two weeks. I started at 245 lbs. I want to reach 145 lbs. 100 was a nice round number, no pun intended. :)

I was just wondering if any of you are journaling. I have found over these weeks that writing is helping me to stay focused and not get so discouraged. I keep having to look back at the first page of my journal to see when I started, because it really seems like more time should have passed!

This is the first time I have tried to lose weight in over 5 years - since before I got pregnant with my twins. I lost 20 pounds through weight training right before that. This time I knew I had to do something about the emotional roots of my over-eating. I have also incorporated daily Bible reading into my plan. I guess you could say I am taking a spiritual approach to my weight loss!

Well, I'll quit rambling. Just wondered what other people with a LOT to lose were doing. I can't really relate too much to those needing to drop a pesky 20lbs! Maybe I will have more in common with some of you.

Hi TwinMom.

Yes, I know that Jenn, Troutman and I all journal here at this board in the Weight loss Diary forum. I also keep blogs elsewhere for extra support... One on a regular blog site and another at 3FC. And I journal my food on my FitDay account. I'm a blog addict. ^___^;; I don't get alot of support from family or friends so I find it online with people who are trying to lose weight too.

Please stay and join our club. :)

We're in the middle of a club challenge. We're walking from Vancouver to Banff. With Troutman's latest entry we're only 536.49 km away. Woot!

Well, I hate to post and run but I gotta get to the gym. Toodles. :D

Twin mom

Yes I understand about not really being able to relate to those who just have a few pounds to lose not that thier plight is an less difficult we just have a longer row to hoe. That is pretty much why this particular thread got started. So welcome and feel free to walk to Banff with us.

On another note

How can I translate my aerobic workout into km's? I have a Special K step counter but I'm not totally sure how to convert steps into kms. Hmmmmmm Any advice? I heard somewhere that 5000 steps equals about 5km. Let me know.

I did 2kms yesterday and forgot to post that. So our total km's are now at 516.49kms

mileage

I walked 4 miles - appx. 6.5 km between May 19 and May 25 (excluding chasing kiddos around the house). But somebody needs to check the math. Didn't you start with 579 km??? :)

Regarding steps to km conversion of the Special K pedometer, I tried looking that up and found this interesting website regarding the pedometer...

Also found this instruction sheet, which seems to indicate that the number of steps/km varies with the size of the stride you take, which you must manually input on the pedometer. So, to convert your steps to km, first you would need to know the number of cm in your stride, then you would need to verify that your pedometer is counting your steps accurately. You up for some more math?

oops! sorry. yeah. I messed up the kilometers and miles. SORRY! guys. I fixed up my posts. thanx for pointing that out twinmom.

jenn-I'm not sure if that's true. but it sounds right to me... i think twinmom is right. it depends on your strides. but 5000 steps is ALOT of steps.

And today, at the gym, I did...
Eliptical - 1.5 miles (2.41 km)
Stairmaster - 0.1 miles (0.16 km) - I'm a whimp I know. Lasted only 2 minutes!
Bike - 4.25 miles (6.84 km)

That's down to 518.58! Woot!
We've crossed over 60 kilometers guys!! GOOD WORK!!

And this time I'm pretty sure I'm right. heheh.
Sorry again guys! *blushes and scrambles out really embarassed*

Oops. I changed all of my posts too. WOW we are doing grrrrrrrreat!

I will check out that website about the steps. Yes 5000 is a lot of steps in a day but they recommend that you do that many in a day to maintain a healty lifestyle. I just wasn't sure how to gage it if I did less than 5000

Hi

Well I figured out how to calcualte my steps. That web page was interesting I will have to keep an eye on my pedometer but for now it seems to be pretty accurate.

Ok I walked 2.7kms today which leaves us with

515.88 Kms
to go!

I got my bottle of water in hand, I've gone to the washroom and I am on my way!

Our total distance left to travel is.

so how's everyone doing? I realized I've lost 34 pounds right now and my pants are getting too big for me. I'm constantly pulling them up. What are you guys doing in terms of clothes? Tailoring? Buying new ones? I want to get new clothes soon but that's gonna be pricey to get a complete new wardrobe almost.

Hi, I'm New :)

I'm not really sure where to make an introduction...but I do need support and I am in the 200+ range, so I'll make it here.

I haven't really dieted in years as my weight has never bothered me. It's just been a slow growth pattern and it wasn't until just a few months ago that I stood naked on the scale and went "OMG I'm heading towards 300 lbs if things don't change."

I need to do something.

I have been slowly losing weight. I started reducing my intake of food (I really don't want to count calories) in January, and it seems like I've been losing 1 pound a week. It's mind boggling slow when I read how much others seem to be able to lose in a week!

Part of my need for support stems from the fact that no one in my family has noticed, none of my friends. I don't want to go around announcing I'm on a diet. When I quit smoking, I did it, without making any announcements - I really don't like the feeling of failure if I "fall off" so I tend not to say anything to anyone around me.

Yesterday on a walk with my 9 year old daughter, she said something to me about how much she was enjoying the walk, and "besides mom, I really think you need to lose some weight" Surprisingly, I didn't scream at her "WHAT? You can't notice the 19 lbs I've already LOST?"

If this isn't the right place to post, or if it's only for those who are walking and calculating their distances, could someone point me in the right direction :)

Thanks,
Debi

Hi everyone. I'm new to this site but I know that it will be a great help to me. Just reading some of ya'lls stories has been an inspiration. I would like to join this group if that's okay. I too am in the 200's, and hope to be out of them by the end of this year. I've got about 50 to lose before I'm in the 100's. It's been a very long time since I have been in the 100's, I guess it was when I was about 15. I'm 22 now. I am also going to start walking, so will someone explain to me a little about what you guys are doing with your distances?

hi guys,

of course you can join us. this club is open to anyone but especially for those people over 200 pounds. so jump right in.

right now we're in the middle of a club challenge. Basically, we're walking from one point (Vancouver) to another point (Banff). We started out with a distance 579km and now we're at about 514 km away. Basically, this is just to get the members of our club more active. Everytime you do something like walking, running, cycling, elipticals, stairmasters or even doing steps, count how many kilometers you've done and post here. It's only for fun and really is just a way to get the members motivated about fitness.

but this thread isn't just about the challenge, you can talk about anything in here. since we're all in the same boat with alot of pounds to lose, I'm sure we're all experiencing the same things. so please join us. :)

M2M - I know how you feel but I got that comment from my own mother. At my highest weight, I was 308 pounds. I'm now 274 and she'd prodd me and say she doesn't notice any change. blah. that's why I find support online too. congrats though on losing 19 pounds so far. Bravo! *applauds* and even more spectacularly, on giving up the smokes.

Congratulations on the 34 pounds!! That is terrific!

I sat down today and plotted out my past weight gain and my future weight goals, and somewhere along the list I wondered when people will start to notice ;)

I realized that I have gained 4.5 pounds each year over the last 16 years. That doesn't seem like much! Although, I don't want to spend 16 years losing it ;)

My current weight loss is averaging 1 pound a week. Which seems so small - what is a realistic amount of weight one can expect if I walk and watch how much I eat?

As for walking, I just started walking "a loop" with my daughter in the evening. You can add my 1 mile from last night to the on going total to Banff.

My husband camped there years ago - and I really want to camp there too!

We camp (and hike) a lot - roughly 1/10th of our year is spent sleeping in our tent. How should we compute hiking or walking into your totals?

I don't own a bike and I wouldn't recognize an eliptical if I bumped into it ;)

As for giving up the smokes, that was back in '90 - the year I started my weight gain, surprisingly enough!

Thanks for the welcome, I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone!

I'm back!

Well, put me down for at least 1.68 km - through a lake. :) I did a bunch of swimming this weekend. With M2M's mile, that gets the total to 509.4 km!

I had a hard time avoiding desserts this weekend, but an easier time with my meals. I stopped at a roadside stand and bought a bag of home grown tomatoes to take with me to our friends' house by the lake. I ate a whole tomato by myself with four of my meals this weekend. They were so delicious, and so satisfying. I LOVE home grown tomatoes. I think next summer the twins will be big enough that I can safely plant some tomato plants and have tomatoes of my very own!!! Oh, the antioxidants. :D
