I have an new set/rep scheme I am going to test out. Here's how it will work. I will use flat DB press as an example. Do one warmup set, as usual. Then, identify whatever weight I can typically use to do 2 sets of 5. Instead, grab the weight one size up. In this case, I would use 80s, but I will use 85s instead. The first time I do it, sure, I might only get 3 (more or less) on each set, but the goal is to really lift heavy and eventually, get to the point where I can do both sets for 5 legit reps. Then I will step up to 90s, and probably only get 2-3 reps on each set, but work my way back up to 5 each. Then, follow with 2 sets of 8, strenuous weight, but do-able.
